The primary requirement for membership in the USA ACS Student Affiliates is an interest in chemistry – both as a subject and a possible career choice. You don't have to be a chemistry major to be a member of our organization (but it doesn't hurt). General membership meetings are held on those Friday afternoons when there isn't an officers' meeting.
Dues are $10.00 per year, and must be paid by the last meeting of the spring semester; ac-cording to our bylaws, this "will constitute the fees for the upcoming year." Local dues for first-time freshmen are waived for the first year.
In addition, active members are expected to complete 10 hours of ACS service, 7 of which may be earned just by attending meetings. The other 3 hours are earned by participating in chapter-sponsored activities; there are several opportunities during the year to earn those additional hours (see the Events page for typical ACS SA activities).
What are thebenefitsof membership in the ACS Student Affiliates?
Active members who are presenting at ACS national meetings – held twice a year in
cities all over the United States – receive financial assistance from the ACS Student Affiliates, the USA Chemistry Department, and the Mobile Section of the ACS, so
their out-of-pocket expenses really aren't that massive.
The opportunities for fulfilling the service-hours requirement are numerous –
and never boring.
If you're considering chemistry as a career, membership in the ACS Student Affiliates looks good on a résumé.
The official social activities we have are pretty classy, and are a great no-pressure way to interact with your fellow students and the Chemistry Department faculty.
You might be surprised at how much fun a bunch of chemistry students can have just hanging around with each other, making a run to McDonald's or Subway, or talking informally with the faculty members (it does happen)!
