One of the biggest social events on the ACS calendar is Mole Day, a national celebration held from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. October 23 of each year. For those of you who are wondering why this particular date and time, a mole is 6.02 x 1023 particles of a substance (that's about 18 g of water, 58.44 g of sodium chloride, or 196.967 g of gold).

We celebrate Mole Day on the Friday nearest October 23 with a cookout on the south side of the Chemistry Building. During the festivities, the Chemistry Department conducts its annual presentation of scholarships to students majoring in chemistry.

This particular Mole Day celebration just happened to coincide with a Science in Motion in-service meeting. Here, chemistry teachers from high schools in Mobile, Washington, Baldwin, Clarke, and Monroe Counties are letting their burgers and hot dogs digest a bit before returning to the lab.
