Course Placement
Foreign Language Proficiency Test
 
Arts & Sciences students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in French, German, or Spanish may take the Foreign Language Proficiency Test. The written examination lasts about two hours and measures proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing expected at the end of two semesters of study. Fifteen-minute oral tests are scheduled for those students who have passed the written component.
 
Students wishing to demonstrate proficiency in another approved language - Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Latin, Russian - should call the department at (251) 460-6291 for more information.
 
Note: Any student in any academic program who completes the second introductory foreign language course with a grade of "C" or better may petition for an additional 3 hours credit for the first course as well.
 
If any student successfully completes an intermediate course in a foreign language, s(he) will be granted credit for the two beginning courses in that language.
