New
Policy: Effective Fall 2004, students
must complete the online Math
Placement Test in order to register for
a 100 level mathematics course. The
test should be taken at least 48 hours prior
to registration to allow time for the scores
to be added to the Banner student record system.
The test will determine the most appropriate
math course for which the student is qualified.
The registration system will enforce the placement
and course prerequisites as indicated in the
table below. |
| |
The
placement test must be completed by the student
within 2 hours, and the use
of calculators is not allowed. The
test may be taken as soon as the JAG number
is received from the Office of Admissions. Students
should keep a copy of their results from the
Math Placement Test to take to their academic
advisors. The URL is www.southalabama.edu/mathplacement.
Questions about the test should be directed
to mathplacement@jaguar1.usouthal.edu
or contact the Mathematics Department at 251-460-6264. |

| Academic
advisors should be aware of the following: |
|
| • |
Students
who need MA 112 for their major and who have
a low placement test score SHOULD NOT register
for MA 110. Instead they should register for
Developmental Studies. MA 110 is not
a prerequisite for MA 112. |
| • |
Students
who only need MA 110 to fulfill
the requirements of their major will be allowed
to register once their Math Placement Test score
is 35 or above.
MA 110 develops an understanding of mathematics
culture and its use in society. It develops
reasoning and computational techniques that
tend to be arithmetic not algebraic. Consequently,
the placement test cannot discriminate among
students who need DS and those who should take
MA 110. |
|
• |
Prerequisite
overrides can be granted by the chair
of Mathematics and Statistics, but these will
only be given in exceptional cases such as those
in which college credit from another institution,
AP credit, or IB credit has not been recorded
in the system. |
| • |
Students
should anticipate a 48 hour lag
between the time they take the Math Placement
Test and the time they register. |
| • |
Students
can take the test from any web-based
computer, they should not get
help, and should not use a
calculator. A violation of the rules
will only result in a student being placed into
a course for which (s)he is not qualified. |
| • |
Students
should be encouraged to take the Math
Placement Test early in their college career.
Furthermore, they should be encouraged to fulfill
their math requirements early in their career.
Mathematics knowledge and ability are necessary
in quantitative courses, scientific courses,
and a variety of applied business courses. |
| • |
Students
must wait 50 days before they
are allowed to retake the Math Placement Test.
In this way, students who have studied on their
own will have the opportunity to demonstrate
that they are ready for a given course. |
| |
Note:
Students admitted to the University through
the Developmental Studies Program must take
the paper and pencil version
of the math placement exam proctored in the
Department of Developmental Studies during new
student orientation. DSP-admitted students should
not take the online Math Placement Test. These
students are required to successfully complete
through DS 090, Intermediate Algebra, regardless
of where they start in the DS math sequence,
before beginning college-level math. |
