Pre-Professional Planning

Pre-Health Professions Advising- Pre-professional programs in pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-optometry, pre-pharmacy, and pre-veterinary medicine are offered. Students should contact the Director of Health Pre-Professions Program, Dr. T. G. Jackson, Department of Chemistry, CHEM 223, (251) 460-6181, regarding professional school admission requirements.

Students must maintain better than a "B" average to be competitive when applying to professional schools. Most medical, dental, optometry, and veterinary schools prefer that the bachelor's degree be completed, but some outstanding students may gain admission prior to graduation. A particular program or major is not required. Course requirements may vary, but generally students must complete the following courses:

General Chemistry with lab - 2 semesters
Organic Chemistry with lab - 2 semesters
General Biology with lab - 2 semesters
Physics with lab - 2 semesters
Math - 2 semesters (calculus recommended and sometimes
required)
  Humanities - 2 semesters
English Composition or Literature - 2 semesters

Pre-Law Advising - A pre-law advisor, Dr. Ronald Nelson (Humanities Building, Room 226, (251) 460-7161), is available to provide information about law school and preparing for the LSAT (Law School Admission Test). A four-year liberal arts curriculum provides an excellent background, but a particular major is not required.
