Interdisciplinary Degree Program Information Session

This degree program at the University of South Alabama grants a major in Interdisciplinary Studies (IST) allowing students to design an individualized, interdisciplinary program of study leading to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree.

IST students work in collaboration with an academic advisor to choose relevant course work from more than 30 departments of instruction to meet the University’s general education requirements, as well as a 54 semester-hour field of study in Administrative Sciences, Applied Arts, Applied Sciences, Human Services, Community Services, Liberal Studies, or Professional Development.

USA requires a minimum of 128 approved semester hours for a bachelor’s degree; 32 of these hours must be in upper division (junior or senior level) course work taken in residence at USA, with a minimum GPA of 2.0. The University allows the transfer of 32 semester hours of non-collegiate credits.

USA general education requirements include a minimum of 41 semester hours of approved courses in written composition; humanities and fine arts; natural sciences and mathematics; history, social, and behavioral sciences. IST department requirements include a foundation course in adult learning and interdisciplinary study (AIS 101, AIS 301), computer applications, research applications, advanced writing, and two courses that support the planning and execution of an independent research project which is part of the field of study (AIS 380, AIS 430).

The field of study course work, taken from three or four disciplines and totaling a minimum of 54 semester hours, must include 27 semester credits from upper division courses.
