This degree program at the University of South Alabama grants a
major in Interdisciplinary Studies (IST) allowing students to
design an individualized, interdisciplinary program of study
leading to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree.
IST students work in
collaboration with an
academic advisor to
choose relevant course work from more than 30 departments of
instruction to meet the University’s general education
requirements, as well as a 54 semester-hour
field of study in
Administrative Sciences, Applied Arts,
Applied Sciences, Human
Services, Community Services,
Liberal Studies, or
Professional Development.
USA requires a minimum
of 128 approved semester hours for a bachelor’s degree; 32 of
these hours must be in upper division (junior or senior level)
course work taken in residence at USA, with a minimum GPA of
2.0. The University allows the transfer of 32 semester hours of
non-collegiate credits.
USA general
education requirements
include a minimum of 41 semester hours of approved courses in
written composition; humanities and fine arts; natural sciences
and mathematics; history, social, and behavioral sciences. IST
department requirements include a foundation course in adult
learning and interdisciplinary study (AIS
101, AIS 301), computer applications, research
applications, advanced writing, and two courses that support the
planning and execution of an independent research project which
is part of the field of study (AIS
380, AIS 430).
The field of study
course work, taken from three or four disciplines and totaling a
minimum of 54 semester hours, must include 27 semester credits
from upper division courses.
