JOYCE C. WOODRUFF, Ed.D. Internship Policy The purpose of the internship is to give the student supervised practical experience in a community setting related to the student’s field of study. The course may be taken for 3 or 6 hours credit. Some internships may require a two-semester commitment. Internship requests require approval by Dr. Woodruff (AIS Chair) before a student registers for AIS 496. To be approved a student must: 1. Select an internship site where he/she may work 6 hours/week (3 hours credit) for 15 weeks or 12 hours/week (6 hours credit) for 15 weeks. 2. Provide the name, address, and daytime phone number of the person on site who has agreed to supervise the student. 3. Be classified as a junior or senior. 4. Have completed adequate course work in the field of study to offer an academic foundation for the field experience. 5. Hold a valid Alabama driver’s license and automobile liability insurance (necessary if the internship requires transporting of clients, etc.). COURSE REQUIREMENTS The student, along with his/her field supervisor, should fill out and sign the internship plan and mail it back to the AIS department. Dr. Woodruff will review the plan and notify the student of its acceptance. This should be done well in advance of registration. Each time the intern visits the internship site he/she must make a journal entry which includes the time on-site as well as experiential learnings (one-half page, double-spaced). Include comments about work assignments, how your internship goals are fulfilled, new learning, problems, etc. This log should be turned in to Dr. Woodruff by the last day of classes. Near the end of the semester, the site supervisor will complete an evaluation form which will include a "recommended" grade for the intern. It is the student’s responsibility to remind the supervisor to turn in the evaluation by the last day of classes. Dr. Woodruff will make the final determination of the course grade based on the site recommendation and the journal.
