In 1940 the Empire Theater, located on Dauphin Street, was showing Melody Ranch, a romantic western in which Gene Autry returns to his Arizona hometown and becomes the honorary sheriff. Like most of the city's downtown theaters, the Empire fell on hard times later in the 20th century and closed.
