Biographical Note:
The Mobile chapter of the American Association of University Women organized in 1936 with twenty-six original members. The first president was Mrs. Truman Smith. The Mobile chapter engaged in various civil projects in the city and took an active interest in state and national issues like equal property taxation in Alabama, opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment, politics, women’s issues, environmental issues, and a variety of other topics. The chapter also sponsored cultural events such as Christmas ballets, literary reviews, and programs for area elementary schools. In 1966, Mobile served as the host city for the Southeast Regional Conference. Several members of the local chapter have served on state and regional AAUW boards and committees. In addition, members of AAUW serve on several local historic preservation boards.



Scope and Content:
Contains operational files, financial statements, membership information, directories, annual reports, correspondence, minutes, subject files, publications, press releases, photographs, scrapbooks, and newspaper clippings.


Arrangement:
Divided into three series: 1) Mobile Chapter Records (3.5 cubic feet); 2) Chapter Subject Files and Scrapbooks (5 cubic feet); and 3) State, Regional, and National Material (1.5 cubic feet).


Access Restrictions:
Open for research with the exception of the financial records in Series 1, which are restricted.

Series Description:

Series 1: Mobile Chapter Records
Arranged alphabetically by topic and contains the Mobile chapter’s operational files, and includes meeting minutes, correspondence, press releases, financial statements, membership information, and directories. The financial records are restricted.

Series 2: Mobile Chapter Subject Files and Scrapbooks
Consists of miscellaneous files, which are arranged alphabetically, on various AAUW activities and projects relating to the local chapter, and scrapbooks highlighting the chapter’s activities for certain years.

Series 3: State, Regional, and National Material
Contains material from various state, regional, and national AAUW events, including programs, convention material, and operational records of the state and regional chapters. Arranged alphabetically.
