Biographical Note:
Established in 1836, the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce began as the Mobile Commerce and Business League. It was the first such organization in the state of Alabama and has undergone several name changes over the years. Known variously as the Mobile Board of Trade, the Mobile Chamber of Commerce and Business League, and the Mobile Chamber of Commerce and Maritime Exchange and Shipping Association, the chamber’s mission is to "serve as a progressive advocate for business needs to promote the Mobile area’s economic well-being." In 1960, the chamber was reincorporated under its present name.

Scope and Content:
Photographs, negatives, newsclippings, brochures, tax records, maps, etc., primarily related to the chamber’s efforts to promote Dauphin Island, Alabama, as a resort location. Other interesting items in the collection are a series of reprinted photographs and textual material related to the USS Hartford, Admiral David Farragut, and the Battle of Mobile Bay, which apparently formed part of a transfer of material from the U.S. Navy and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard to the chamber after the chamber began plans to create a "Hartford Room" at Fort Gaines. Those plans failed to materialize. Also of interest is a brochure and photograph relating to the semiquincentennial of the founding of Mobile.

Arranged into five series: Series 1 – Brochures, Newsclipping, Correspondence, etc., 0.5 cu. ft.; Series 2 – Photographs, 1.00 cubic feet; Series 3 – Oversized Materials, 0.50 cu. ft.; Series 4 – Postcards, 0.25 cu. ft.; Series 5 – Negatives, 0.50 cu. ft.
