Dr. Samuel Eichold was born on May 27, 1916, in Mobile, Alabama. He received both
undergraduate and medical school degrees from New Orleans' Tulane University and served a
naval tour in Samoa, where he specialized in infectious diseases. In 1973, at the age of
59, Dr. Eichold left his private practice in Mobile and became a charter member of the
University of South Alabama College of Medicine, where he remained active until his death
in May 2006.
Among his achievements was his founding
in 1962 of the Heustis Medical Museum. He is also known to have supported the preservation
of many homes in the Oakleigh Historic Garden District and funded the Eichold Fine Arts
Center and Rare Book Room at Springhill College.

Series Description:
Series 1.
The Heustis Medical Museum, 1816-1982 (Bulk 1960s)
This series contains printed material relating to Dr. Eichold's contribution to the Museum
including articles, descriptions of exhibits, information on acquisitions and donations,
and categorized inventories of artifacts. These artifact inventories are of particular
interest, as are the catalogues and price lists Dr. Eichold collected in his attempts to
stock the museum with items that ranged from the familiar and mundane to the bizarre and
nightmarish.
Series
2. The Dictionary of American Medical Biography/Other Medical Professionals, 1860s
-1980s (Bulk 1979-1980)
Making up the bulk of this series are single file folders of biographical material on
various physicians of significance, particularly to the history of Mobile, whom Dr.
Eichold compiled information on for inclusion in the 1984 publication of the Dictionary of
American Medical Biography or for his own interest. Included in his research were such
individuals as famed doctor Josiah Nott; Dr. Henry S. Levert; Dr. Eugene Dubose Bondurant,
dean of the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1912; and Dr. Tucker H. Frazer, a
later dean of the same university. Of particular note in this series are the number of
photographs, one or more for nearly every doctor whom Eichold researched.
Series 3.
Medical History, 1879-1984 (Bulk 1975-1980)
This series consists of artifacts of historical interest to Dr. Eichold. They include
such items as newspaper clippings, articles compiled according to a particular theme or
subject, and medical ledgers and session books from around the turn of the century. These
last items are of particular interest, especially an operating room record book kept from
1915 to 1921 by the Inge-Bondurant Sanitorium, wherein the names, ages, illnesses, and
treatments of various patients are given in varying degrees of detail. Also contained
within this series is a small collection of lantern slide portraits of several of the
doctors from the nineteenth century.
Series 4. Printed
Ephemera (1982)
This series contains only ephemera and correspondence related to the blood glucose
reagent strip Visidex, which Dr. Eichold was evaluating for Miles Laboratories, Inc.
Series 5.
The Dr. Tucker H. Frazer Papers
Tucker Frazer was born in Auburn, Alabama, on February 14, 1859, to Alexander and
Catherine Frazer. He received his B.E. from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1878, and
his M.D. from the medical department of the University of Alabama in 1886. He practiced
medicine in Auburn from 1888 to 1891, when he became a lecturer at the University of
Alabama. He would later serve as secretary-treasurer of the school of medicine, dean of
obstetrics, and dean of the medical department. He died in Mobile on December 26, 1919, at
the age of 60.
This series contains mainly newspaper
clippings, correspondence and manuscripts on topics in medicine, particularly dermatology
and gynecology. Many of these manuscripts are disordered and incomplete, but most are
still readable. Separate folders have been created for Religion and Prohibition, topics of
apparent interest to Dr. Frazer. Also included are a number of photographs and
correspondence related to the University of Alabama School of Medicine.
