Biographical Note
Daniel Geary, a Mobile bookkeeper, fought in two Creek Indian wars and was a veteran of
the Mexican-American War. Despite being nearly fifty years or age in 1861, the state of
Alabama commissioned Geary a lieutenant in Gage's Light Battery. He fought at the Battle
of Shiloh and became an artillery instructor, serving on the line of redoubts and bay
batteries that protected the city of Mobile from Union forces. At the end of the war Geary
was Brigade Ordnance Officer for the Confederate Army.
Scope and Content:
This collection consists of the day-to-day records of the Ordnance Office of the city of
Mobile during the Civil War. It includes day-books, letter-books, orders, invoices,
personnel rosters, and some personal correspondence. Also included are Geary's personal
receipt books from 1839 to 1891. Of particular interest within the collection is an 1852
Odd Fellow Certificate, a signed Parole of Honor in which Geary swore to cease his service
with the Confederate Army, and a diary by Charles Brother, a Union officer, describing the
Battle of Mobile Bay.
