Biographical Information
Sheldon Gottlieb was born on December 22, 1932. He received a B.A. from Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953, and an M.S. from the University of Massachusetts in 1956, and a Ph.D. at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956, and married Eda Judith Robin in 1956.

From 1959 until 1964, Gottlieb worked as a research physiologist at the Linde Division Union Carbide Corporation in Tonawanda, New York. He then worked from 1964-1968 as an Assistant Professor in Physiology and in Anesthesiology at Jefferson Medical College. From 1968 until 1972, he was an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, and from 1972 until 1980, he was Professor of Biological Sciences at Indiana University and Purdue University at Fort Wayne. From 1980 until 1997, Gottlieb was a Professor of Biology, the Dean of the Graduate School, and Director of Research at the University of South Alabama. During this time, Gottlieb also worked at the Baromedical Research Institute in New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1984 until 1998.

During his career, Gottlieb also belonged to many professional organizations. From 1984 until 1986, he was President of USA’s Sigma XI. He received awards for being an Outstanding Scholar from the USA Alumni Association in 1994, for Excellence in Teaching in the Gerontology Undergraduate Certificate Program in 1994, and for Outstanding Scholarship in Gerontology from the USA Programs in Gerontology in 1995.

As a member of the Biology Department, Dr. Gottleib was very active in both departmental and campus-wide affairs.  He was especially interested and important to the creation of some new courses and monitoring the relationship between campus faculty leaders and the University Administration.  Many of his published articles, which are numerous, are included in this collection, along with several very interesting letters to the editor of the Press-Register.
