Biographical Note
The Mobile Charity League was founded by twenty-five local women of Mobile, Alabama, in 1925. Its goal was to raise money for a children’s clinic. In 1931, the group affiliated itself with the Association of Junior Leagues of America and changed its name to the Junior League of Mobile (JLM). Throughout its long history, the Junior League has sponsored programs dealing with education and health issues, historic preservation, social and civic responsibilities, and mental health. In its early years, JLM sponsored health and wellness clinics for area children and, in 1935, opened a thrift shop that provided quality clothing and household merchandise to Mobilians at a reasonable price. During World War II, JLM took an active role in locating housing for the thousands of industrial workers who relocated to Mobile. After the war, it sponsored a clinic for children with Cerebral Palsy, and, in 1963, it was among the first groups to support historic preservation. During the 1970s, JLM fostered the creation of a community volunteer center, published guidebooks for new residents, and worked with local schools to improve access to educational tools. In 1979, JLM allocated $100,000 to help build the Gulf Coast Exploreum. Four years later, it opened a full-time anti-drug educational center. In recent years, JLM has partnered with other local organizations such as Wilmer Hall Children’s Home and the Dearborn Community Center /YMCA. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the League earned national recognition for their quick response to the tragedy and for the more than $130,000 worth of supplies and clothing it donated to the relief effort. JLM has produced three highly-popular cookbooks, the proceeds of which have been used to further their programs in the local community. For the last twenty-five years, JLM has also sponsored Christmas Jubilee, a weekend-long holiday market. This program has generated more than $3 million to help support JLM’s community efforts. The Junior League of Mobile currently has approximately 1,800 members.

Series Description

Series 1: Governing Documents and Minutes
Contains the original constitution, bylaws, and incorporation papers, as well as copies of meeting minutes from the board of directors/executive committee, general membership meetings, and various other committees. The minutes are arranged into three categories (General Membership, Board of Directors/Executive Committee, and Miscellaneous Committees), which are then arranged chronologically. Some of the earliest minutes were kept in ledgers but the majority of the minutes in this series are typed. This series also contains the bulk of JLM correspondence. Other correspondence can be found in Series 3.

Series 2: Financial Records
An artificial series that includes copies of financial statements, and various reports. Arranged chronologically.

Series 3: Subject Files
Arranged alphabetically, this series consists of files that document the League’s various community projects, as well as material intended for internal use, such as membership recruitment material and suggestions for future projects. The series is particularly rich for researchers interested in the social history of south Alabama and community volunteerism in general. The series also contains a sub-series called "presidential files," an artificial series that contains speeches and other material from various JLM presidents. By no means complete, this series does provide an overview of the goals of the organization throughout its existence. These files have been arranged chronologically.

Series 4: Newspaper Clippings and Scrapbooks
Photocopied newspaper clippings with known dates are arranged chronologically. Undated clippings are arranged into broad thematic categories. Each scrapbook has a page-level inventory to assist researchers looking for specific JLM members or events. The scrapbooks are arranged chronologically.

Series 5: Publications
Contains copies of various JLM publications, including newsletters, yearbooks, and Folio, the official journal of the organization. This series also contains copies of the JLM cookbooks and other miscellaneous publications including "Preservation with a Purpose," a pamphlet produced in cooperation with the Mobile Historic Development Commission in the mid-1960s to encourage businesses to support the restoration of Downtown Mobile.

Series 6: Photographic Material
Contains mostly photographic prints, arranged alphabetically, of individual JLM members and images that document the group’s activities throughout its history. Prints of individuals and groups that are identified have been listed individually. Photos of clearly-identified events are arranged alphabetically by subject. Unidentified photographs are arranged broadly by subject. The series also contains a collection of negatives, color positive slides, and CD-ROMs containing digital photographs, which have all been identified and inventoried.

Series 7: Audiovisual Material [See Series 6]
A small series containing video cassettes and DVDs of various JLM functions, including television commercials, and recordings of League meetings.

Series 8: Oversized and Ephemera [See Series 6]
Consists of a selection of oversized posters and other material, as well as a small number of commemorative items from various JLM activities.
