Biographical Note:
The Mobile Bar Association, the fourteenth oldest such association in the United States, was incorporated on April 12, 1869. It is the oldest bar association in the state of Alabama. The Women’s Auxiliary to the Mobile Bar Association was founded in 1956.


Scope and Content:
Includes bulletins, by-laws, committee reports, constitution, correspondence, financial documents, membership lists, minutes, notes, scrapbooks, etc., related to the Mobile Bar Association and the Mobile Bar Auxiliary. Contained within the Mobile Bay Auxiliary scrapbooks are news bulletins, clippings, invitations, a list of charter members, and photographs. Included in the photographs are images showing renovations to the Dr. Henry S. Levert house and the dedication of the house as the official headquarters of the bar association. Among the issues discussed in the bar association records are: change to the city’s form of government, continuing legal education, indigent representation, Law Day, legal aid, the Mobile Hospital Board, political contributions, and zoning. Correspondents include Winston F. Groom, father of the novelist; John McDuffie; Francis H. Inge; and many of the other attorneys who have practiced in Mobile since 1932.

Arranged into 2 series: 1. Mobile Bar Association (1854-2006 [Bulk 1932-2006]), and 2. Mobile Bar Auxiliary (1956-2002 [Bulk 1956-1995]). Series 1 is arranged chronologically by presidential term, and Series 2 is arranged chronologically.
