Biographical Note
Wladimir Wertelecki was born in Rivne, Poland, on July 28, 1936. Since 1974 he has been
involved in the department of medical genetics at the University of South Alabama,
currently serving as professor and chair. Werteleckis major areas of interest
include medical genetics, human handicaps, and pediatrics. He has been involved with many
groups throughout his career and has also organized many conferences dealing with genetics
and birth defects, as well as public health and other issues. He is the recipient of
numerous awards and the author of more than 250 articles and abstracts.
Scope and Content
Consists of 212 items including annual reports for the USA College of Medicine,
correspondence, course guides, magazines, maps, medical documents, pamphlets, photographs,
and a poster. Subjects include USA College of Medicine and genetic defects as well as
Werteleckis work on Cuban health issues.

The papers have been divided into five series arranged chronologically: 1. Cuba Project,
2000-2001 (102 items); 2. USA Medical College, 1976-2009 (34 Items); 3. Medical Books,

Series Description
Series 1: Cuba Project, 2000-2001 (102 items).
Arranged into three categories: correspondence (March 2000 to April 2001), photographs,
and documents. There are 59 pieces of correspondence primarily between Dr. Wertelecki and
Dr. Luis Heredero, his Cuban counterpart. These mainly concern Herederos and
Weteleckis trips to Mobile and Havana, Cuba. Their correspondence also discusses
medications and teaching strategies. Included in this series are 18 photographs of
Werteleckis trip to Havana, in some of which Dr. Heredero is shown. The documents
include business cards, maps of Havana, newspaper clippings, and numerous other items that
pertain to the arrangement of the Mobile and Havana medical communities, as well as an
itinerary for Werteleckis trip.
Series 2: USA College of Medicine, 1976-2009 (34 items).
Arranged chronologically and by item type. Contains 33 items that span August 1976 to
March 2001 and include annual departmental progress reports, a brochure, bulletins and
course offerings, and service statistics for university hospitals. The course offerings,
bulletins, and annual progress reports provide descriptions of the USA Medical College and
the departments of which it is comprised. Bound volumes can be found in Box 3 due to space
limitations, while printed documents can be found in Box 1. In addition, this series
includes an extensive biography of Dr. Wertelecki, which was added to the collection at a
later date.
Series 3: Medical Books, 1987, 1991 (3 Items)
This series contain three unrelated medical books: Boletin De La Academia Nacional De
Medicina De Buenos Aires (1991), Medallero Medico (1987), Assessment
of American Medical Colleges 1995 Institutional Goals and Ranking Report (1995). Medallero
Medico and Boletin De La Academia are in box 2 and the Assessment of
American Medical Colleges is found in box 3.
Series 4: Publications, 1967-2001 (68 Items)
Werteleckis publications consist of 68 items. These publications primarily concern
genetic and birth defects. These publications are copies taken from books and magazines
where his writings appeared and many have duplicates in the collection. They have been
arranged chronologically.
Series 5: Ephemera, (6 Items)
Arranged chronologically. Consists maps, programs, pamphlets on Fairhope and the Alabama
State Capital, and an issue of National Geographic. Dates range from 1989 to 1995.
