Spain 2009 Study Abroad

Program Overview

The Department of Visual Arts at the University of South Alabama is hosting a study abroad experience in Spain scheduled for May 10 through May 25, 2009. The program will be based in the medieval city of Toledo, a world heritage site, with excursions to Madrid to visit the Prado, Reina Sophia, Palacio Real, and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museums, an excursion to El Escorial and to Segovia to tour the Alcazar and a two day excursion to the cities of Granada and Cordoba visiting the Alhambra and the Mesquita. Up to six credit hours may be earned in studio art, art history, and/or international studies courses with some work required prior to and after the trip.

Accommodations and Meals

Participants will reside in three star hotels located in historic centers of Toledo and Granada. Accommodations are based on double or occasional triple occupancy. Single accommodations are available for an additional charge. Also included are daily breakfasts and welcome and departure dinners.

Courses

Students may register for two classes with up to six (6) credit hours awarded. Typically, students will register for one studio course and one art history course. Registration for classes will be handled on an individual basis in an effort to best meet the educational needs of the student. Studio courses include: any level of drawing or painting, photography, or directed studies in studio art. The art history course offered is ARH 290 Special Topics: The Art and Architecture of Spain (3 credit hours). Students who are not art majors may opt to enroll in ARH 100 Art History Survey, ARS 101 Art Appreciation (These courses fulfill general education requirements.), or IS 494: Directed Studies in International Studies (3 credit hours). Some course work will be required prior to and after the trip. Students may opt to pursue only three credit hours; however, program fees are fixed and allow up to six credit hours. They will not change for lower hour enrollments. Students not currently enrolled at USA must make application to the University of South Alabama prior to enrolling in this program. This course is part of the USA summer schedule of courses.

Non-Students

Individuals who are not students are permitted to enroll in this study abroad experience. They must abide by the same rules and regulations that govern student participants, are entitled to all aspects of the course that are available to students, and have the option of participating in lecture and studio activities.

Program Costs

The cost of the Spain 2009 program is $4100. This includes round-trip transportation from Mobile to Madrid, transportation to Toledo and specified excursions, accommodations as described above, daily breakfasts, welcome and departure dinners in Spain, specified museum entrance fees, and an international identification card which includes health insurance and international emergency assistance. Tuition for up to six (6) credit hours is included.

All meals, other than breakfasts and specified dinners, are at the participant’s own expense. A minimum of $600 should be budgeted for other meals, additional transportation, entrance fees, and other incidental expenses. Participants should also consider budgeting additional funds for art supplies or personal expenses such as souvenirs or independent travel, based upon individual spending habits.

Costs are based on anticipated exchange rates and enrollment and are subject to change. Program items may be deleted in lieu of a price increase. Price may vary for students who are not residents of Alabama or are not currently enrolled at USA.

Payment Schedule and Deadline

A completed application and a reservation deposit of $200 will reserve your place for this study abroad opportunity—space is limited. The reservation deposit will be accepted until the first payment date. The first payment of $1500 is due January 30, 2009 to cover airfare and accommodations deposits. The final payment of $2400 is due April 17, 2009. Applications are available in the Visual Arts office and the Office of International Education.

Financial aid may be applied to this course. If interested in applying for financial aid, please contact a financial aid officer at your earliest convenience to request an award for summer 2009. This course is part of the USA summer schedule of courses.

Refund Policy: Program fees are refundable only in the event of cancellation of the program and are based on recoverable expenses. All payments should be considered non-refundable and any requests for consideration of refunds based on extenuating circumstances (medical, etc…) must be made in writing and will be considered on a case by case basis.
