Department of Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium
Dr. Yi Jiang of the Los Alamos National Lab will give a talk entitled Tumor Growth from Molecule to Tissue: A Cell-based Multiscale Approach on Thursday, October 2 at 3:30 p.m. in ILB 370. Faculty and students from all departments are welcome, as are interested members of the community. There will be refreshments served from 3:00 to 3:30 in the conference room on the same floor.
Talk Abstract
Cancer remains one of the leading cause of disease death for
Americans. Moreover the overall effectiveness of therapeutic
treatments is only approximately 50%. Therefore the development of
prognostic tools could have immediate impact on the lives of millions
of cancer patients. We have developed an integrated, cell-based
modeling framework that includes a cellular model for cell dynamics
(cell growth, division, death, migration and adhesion), an
intracellular regulatory network for cell cycle control and a
signaling network for cell decision-making, and a partial differential
equation system for extracellular chemical dynamics. This model has
produced avascular tumor growth dynamics that agree with tumor
spheroid experiments; it has generated realistic vessel sprout
morphogenesis in tumor-induced angiogenesis; it has also shown
potential for comparing chemotherapeutic strategies for vascular
tumor. In particular, we investigate the mechanisms for tumor growth
saturation and the roles of VEGF and ECM in tumor angiogenesis. Given the biological
realism and flexibility of the model, we believe that it can
facilitate a deeper understanding of the cellular and molecular
interactions associated with cancer progression and treatment. |

USA Opera Presents "The Elixir of Love"

popular comic opera "L'Elisir d'Amore" (The Elixir of Love) on Friday,
April 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 13 at 3:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall of
Laidlaw Performing Arts Center. Listed by Opera America as one of the 20 most

the operatic repertoire worldwide. The story revolves around a young peasant,
Nemorino, who is in love with the cappricious farmer girl Adina. Adina becomes
'betrothed' to the Sargeant Belcore in order to toy with Nemorino's heart and
force him to admit he cares for her. His attempts to win her affections are

Nemorino a love potion that is nothing more than a bottle of wine.
The production features the students of USA's Music
Department and a chamber orchestra. Sung in Italian with English supertitles, the
opera is a collaborative effort between Thomas Rowell, conductor and
Allan Gardner, Assistant Professor of Theatre.

artifacts can illustrate how the worldview of Spanish colonists was
significantly molded by Catholic ideology.

Larkins Auditorium, Mobile Museum of Art
An Introduction to the Alabama Folk Pottery Exhibit at the Mobile Museum of Art; October 12, 2007 to January 6, 2008
This exhibition organized by the Birmingham Museum of Art documents the
heritage of pottery making in Alabama. The exhibit traces pottery-making
families from the early days of statehood, when ceramic vessels were a
necessity for the storage of foodstuffs, to the later days when decoration
and artistry became more important.
Joey Brackner is director of the Alabama Center for Traditional Culture, a department of the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Since 1985, Brackner has undertaken numerous special projects, including co-production of Unbroken Tradition, a film documentary on Alabama folk potter Jerry Brown; and editorship of Tributaries, the Journal of the Alabama Folklife Association. Brackner's recent book Alabama Folk Pottery (University of Alabama Press 2006) is the culmination of some twenty years of research. One chapter on potters on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay was written in collaboration with USA archaeologists Greg Waselkov and Bonnie Gums and their study of old kiln sites in Daphne, Montrose, and Fairhope, and on Fish River.
FREE AND OPEN TO ALL – There will be a reception after the talk, please RSVP by November 12 the Mobile Museum of Art at (251) 208-5200, so they know how many will be attending.

young grandson Carlos. Fascinated with his late father's life, Carlos
runs away to join Julian. But when Laura, an executive looking for a
site for a tourist resort, learns this, she moves to destroy this
remnant of Julian's once-proud career. (In Spanish with English
