Patrick Imsand Faculty Guitar Recital
      On Wednesday, November 5, 2008, Patrick Imsand presents his Faculty Guitar Recital in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Recital Hall. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and includes exciting works by 20th century composers Leo Brouwer, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Nakita Koshkin's The "Ballads" Suite for Solo Guitar written in 2003. Mr. Imsand is a faculty member of the University of South Alabama, teaching Classic Guitar and Introduction to Music. Imsand is also on the faculty of Pensacola Junior College where he teaches Classic Guitar.

USA Choirs Present "Songs of Earth and Water"

Old St. Stephens Days - "Through the Eyes of a Child"
      This Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. a special public program "Through the Eyes of a Child" is presented at St. Stephens Historical Park in Washington County. Local school children dressed in 19th-century costumes tell stories and legends about the history of this old territorial capital. From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. there will be craft demonstrations, entertainment, and food. You can also bring lunch and have a picnic. The ongoing excavations by USA's Center for Archaeological Studies at the ca. 1815 Globe Hotel will be open for viewing. Admission is $5.00. Peter Wood Faculty Trumpet Recital
      On Sunday, October 12 at 3:00 p.m., Dr. Peter Wood will perform a faculty trumpet recital in the Recital Hall of the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of South Alabama. With the collaboration of pianist Robert Holm, Wood will perform an exciting program of old and new works for trumpet. The concert will feature Jean-Baptiste Loeillet's Baroque Sonata in A-flat, Ulysses Kay's Tromba Suite, Raffaele Bellafronte's jazz-influenced Afrika, and Ivan Erod's Enjoying Life. Wood and Holm will also perform the Alabama premier of Kevin Walczyk's Concerto Gaucho, colored by the vibrant harmonies and rhythms of Uruguayan cowboys. The duo will just be finishing their East Coast concert tour the previous week, during which they will perform at universities in South Carolina, North Carolina, Washington, DC, and Maryland.

Mithril Celebrates Autumn: Music (and Tales) of Banshees, Ghosts & Wandering Spirits
      Mithril, Mobile's premier Celtic/World Music group, will present two concerts at the USA Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall on Monday, October 27 and Tuesday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m. each evening.
      The concerts will celebrate the lovely Autumn weather and pay homage to the Celtic holiday of Samhain, the ancient precursor to Halloween. The group will add some decidedly spooky seasonal tunes to their regular repertoire of high energy Irish jigs and reels.

Bioarchaeology Talk
      Dr. Nick Hermann, Mississippi State University, will present a talk entitled "Bioarchaeology: Investigating Ancient Human Burials from the Gulf Coast to Greece" on Monday, October 6, at 6:00 p.m. in the USA Library Auditorium. Dr. Hermann will discuss the excavations of human burials from an archaeological site on Bon Secour River in Baldwin County for USA's Center for Archaeological Studies, as well as his summer work on ancient Greek tombs. Talk Abstract

Cancer remains one of the leading cause of disease death for Americans. Moreover the overall effectiveness of therapeutic treatments is only approximately 50%. Therefore the development of prognostic tools could have immediate impact on the lives of millions of cancer patients. We have developed an integrated, cell-based modeling framework that includes a cellular model for cell dynamics (cell growth, division, death, migration and adhesion), an intracellular regulatory network for cell cycle control and a signaling network for cell decision-making, and a partial differential equation system for extracellular chemical dynamics. This model has produced avascular tumor growth dynamics that agree with tumor spheroid experiments; it has generated realistic vessel sprout morphogenesis in tumor-induced angiogenesis; it has also shown potential for comparing chemotherapeutic strategies for vascular tumor. In particular, we investigate the mechanisms for tumor growth saturation and the roles of VEGF and ECM in tumor angiogenesis. Given the biological realism and flexibility of the model, we believe that it can facilitate a deeper understanding of the cellular and molecular interactions associated with cancer progression and treatment.

Three Faculty Piano Recitals within Eight Days
      As a part of USA's Workshop and Masterclasses for Pre-College pianists this week and next, the Department of Music is proud to present three great Faculty Piano recitals in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall over the next week.
      Tuesday evening, June 24 at 7:30 p.m., Workshop Director and USA faculty Dr. Robert Holm will present a recital entitled "Favorite Piano Pieces by Great Composers." The recital, open to the public as well as to workshop participants and their guests, is intended to present to early pianists the "standards of the piano repertoire," known to music-lovers the world over. Admission is $5 for the general public and $3 for all USA faculty, staff, students and senior citizens.
      Thursday evening, June 26 at 7:30 p.m., guest piano faculty Axel Lenarduzzi will present a recital featuring works by Chopin, Debussy and Rachmaninov.       The culminating recital of the workshops will be presented Tuesday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Robert Holm and guest piano faculty Axel Lenarduzzi will present a special Duo Faculty Piano Recital, "Music from Four Countries," concentrating on European composers Johannes Brahms, Gustav Holst, Claude Debussy and Manuel Infante. USA Flute Choir Spring Concert
      The University of South Alabama Flute Choir, under the direction of Dr. Andra Bohnet, will offer their Spring Concert on Thursday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. The six member ensemble will utilize the entire flute family from bass flute to piccolo. Outstanding Master's Thesis
      USA's Outstanding Master's Thesis Award was presented March 19 to Nobuo Ueda in Biological Sciences. His thesis is titled: "Heat Schock Protein 70 Expression in Larval and Spat Stages of the Eastern Oyster, Crassosotrea virginica: Changes During Early Life Development and in Response to Environmental Stress." Gone With the Wind Showing
      Phi Alpha Theta, the history club at USA, will be showing the 1939 film "Gone With the Wind" as part of their "History vs. Hollywood" series on Friday, February 15, at 6:30 p.m. in room 150 of the Humanities Building. There will be refreshments as well as commentary from two members of the history faculty, Drs. Don Devore and Mel McKiven. The screening is free.

Talk on Roman Britain
      Kara Burns will present "The Image of Orpheus on the Mosaics of Roman Britain" at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2008 in Humanities Building Room 150.
      Kara Burns is a new instructor in the Department of Visual Arts, and is completing her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. Her presentation will involve some of her dissertation research and is mostly a mix of iconography, interpretation, and mystery cult history. She will also include a discussion of context, such as villa type, mosaic placement within the villa, and social and political atmosphere of Roman Britain.

Distinguished Lecture Series - Climate Change: Two Time Perspective
      The Distinguished Lecture Series, presented by the University of South Alabama Baldwin County, will feature two veteran environmental scientists, Dr. James Conners and Dr. Miriam Fearn. They will offer thought-provoking views of Earth's climatic history and the ongoing climate-change debate from both short-term (geographical) and long-term (geological) perspectives.

USA Performance Highlights Greek Poet Constantine Cavafy
      The University of South Alabama College of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with Mobile's Greek community, will sponsor a one-man show by actor Yannis Simonides entitled "Cavafy: Passions and Ancient Days, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, at the USA Laidlaw Performing Arts Center. The performance is based on the life and work of Greek poet Constantine P. Cavafy.

Spring 2008 Writing Outreach Schedule Announced
      The Freshman Composition Program within the Department of English at USA is sponsoring free-of-charge information sessions for students and others who need additional assistance with particular writing skills. The goal of the Writing Outreach program is to reinforce necessary skills that are often not covered in class discussions due to time constraints.
      Writing Outreach is open to all university students, staff, and faculty, as well as interested members of the community. The sessions are purely voluntary. There is no registration requirement and no commitment necessary; participants may come to one or all of the sessions. These will be approximately forty-five minute sessions. USA's University Chorale presents Valentine's Concert
      The University Chorale is presenting its second annual Valentine's Day concert on Tuesday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the USA Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. The concert, entitled "Romance, Again...please," will feature some classic romantic standards, such as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Cry Me A River," "Someone to Watch Over Me," and "At Last." Far from a typical choral concert, the individual members of the Chorale will perform many songs as solos and duets, feature love songs new and old, and even include instrumental works as well. Renowned Composer to Perform at USA
      Renowned composer and violist Kenji Bunch and his wife, pianist Monica Ohuchi, will present a classical conversation and performance at USA's Laidlaw Performing Arts Center on Thursday, January 24 at 7:00 p.m. While regular tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students, all USA faculty, staff and students will be admitted free with their USA ID.
      Bunch and Ohuchi will perform selected works, and then share with the audience the stories behind the works. The performance will also include local musicians.
      Bunch serves as composer-in-residence for the Mobile Symphony, and in April he will premier a new symphony he has written in honor of Mobile.

Talk on Spanish Colonial Artifacts

      Mary Furlong, Outreach Coordinator, Northwest Region, Florida Public Archaeology Program will present a talk entitled "Religious Artifacts and Ceramic Figurines from Pensacola's Presidios" on Tuesday, January 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Delchamps Archaeology Museum on the main USA campus, Throughout the Spanish colonial world religious artifacts, such as crucifixes, medallions, and rosaries, have been recovered archaeologically, and represent material evidence of the practice of Catholicism in the daily lives of Spanish colonists. Catholicism was integrated into all aspects of Spanish colonial material culture, including artifacts normally deemed secular, such as coins, majolica sherds, and ceramic figurines. Learn how artifacts can illustrate how the worldview of Spanish colonists was significantly molded by Catholic ideology.

Old St. Stephens Days
"Through the Eyes of a Child"

      On Saturday, October 27, the 5th annual presentation of "Through the Eyes of a Child" is presented at St. Stephens Historical Park in Washington County. People of all ages in 19th-century costumes tell stories and legends about the history of this old territorial capital on the Tombigbee River. There will be arts and craft demonstrations, entertainment, and lots of food. Or you can bring your lunch and have a picnic at this beautiful state park.
      USA's Center for Archaeological Studies will have excavations at the Globe Hotel open for viewing and USA archaeologist George Shorter will show artifacts recovered from the hotel site and answer any questions.
