Arts & Sciences Departmental Scholarships
 
The number of scholarships awarded each year and the dollar amount for each scholarship may vary yearly depending on available funds.

Department of Music
 

Music Scholarship

Scholarships range from $200 to $1,500 per semester and are available to majors and non-majors in the keyboard, voice and instrumental areas. Recipients must carry at least a 12 credit hour load and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Audition dates and forms are available in the Department of Music office at (251) 460-6136.
 

John W. Laidlaw Music Scholarship

Scholarships are available in all areas of music study and range from $1,500 to $3,000. They require an audition, an ACT score of 28 or higher and/or a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
 

Mike Bartels Music Scholarship

Awards range from $300 to $500 per year and are available to majors and non-majors. The recipient(s) must be enrolled in applied percussion and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
 

Chester Music Scholarships

Awards range from $250 to $500 per year and are available to majors and non-majors. The recipient(s) must be enrolled in applied piano and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Awarded by Piano faculty.
 

Presser Scholarships

The $4,000 scholarship is awarded to a rising senior music major for a period of two consecutive semesters. The faculty must nominate students for consideration.
 

Sue Houston Hanlein Scholarship for Piano

Award ranges from $1,500 to $1,750 per semester and is available to qualified pianists who are majoring in music. The recipient must be enrolled in applied piano and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Awarded by the piano faculty.
 
 
Department of Philosophy
 

Charles R. McGlothren Scholarship

$1,000 awarded in the Spring Semester to philosophy majors with the highest academic merit as determined by the Department faculty. Student must have a minimum of a 3.5 GPA in philosophy courses.
 

Pinebrook Shopping Center Scholarship 1

$1,000 awarded in the Spring Semester to Philosophy majors with outstanding academic merit as determined by the Department faculty. Student must have a minimum of a 3.5 GPA in philosophy courses.
 

Pinebrook Shopping Center Scholarship 2

$1,000 awarded in the Spring Semester to Philosophy majors with outstanding academic merit as determined by the Department faculty. Student must have a minimum of 3.5 GPA in philosophy courses.
 

Julius and Jean Marx Scholarship 1

$3,000 awarded in the Spring Semester to Philosophy majors with outstanding academic merit as determined by the Department faculty. Students must have a minimum of 3.5 GPA in philosophy courses.
 

Julius and Jean Marx Scholarship 2

$2,000 awarded in the Spring Semester to Philosophy majors with outstanding academic merit as determined by the Department faculty. Students must have a minimum of 3.5 GPA in philosophy courses.
 

Julius and Jean Marx Scholarship 3

$2,000 awarded in the Spring Semester to Philosophy majors with outstanding academic merit as determined by the Department faculty. Students must have a minimum of 3.5 GPA in philosophy courses.

Department of Physics
 

Physics Department Promising Student Award

The Physics Department Promising Student Award will be granted from the department’s endowed chair funds. The one-time award shall be up to $500 with the exact amount to be determined by the Physics faculty. It is awarded to a full-time physics major in good academic standing, in their sophomore or junior year. For more information contact the Physics Department.
 

Physics Faculty Honors Fellowship

Covers tuition and fees (up to 16 hrs/semester) for up to four semesters. Awarded to majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA who have completed the introductory physics sequence. For more information contact the Physics Department.
 

Jared Adkins Physics Scholarship

$500 awarded for the Fall Semester to a sophomore or junior physics major. Selection criteria will include overall academic standing, academic standing in physics courses, extra-curricular activities and may include financial need. For more information contact the Physics Department.
 

USA Foundation Physics Scholarship

A $1,500 per year ($750 per semester) scholarship will be applied toward academic-year tuition and fee expenses. The scholarship may be renewed a maximum of two additional years. For more information contact the Physics Department.
 
 
Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice
 

Al Roemer Memorial Award for Excellence in Criminal Justice

A cash award annually awarded to criminal justice major who plans a career in law enforcement and shows need. Applicants submit letter to awards committee.
 

David L. Horton Memorial Award for Excellence in Political Science

A cash award annually awarded to graduating senior (PSC or CJ) with highest GPA.
 

Gaston-Kvalheim Memorial Award for Excellence in Public Service

A cash award annually awarded to two students (one each in PSC and CJ) with career plans in public service. Applicants submit letter to awards committee.
 

J. Edgar Hoover Memorial Scholarship

A cash award annually awarded to Mobile police officer and criminal justice major. Applicants submit essay on impact of professionalism in law enforcement. Applicants submit letter to awards committee.
 

James H. Boyd Memorial Award for Excellence in Public Administration

A cash award annually awarded to Master of Public Administration graduate student with highest GPA.
 

Myrtice Tyson Memorial Scholarship

A cash award annually awarded to female major (PSC or CJ) with highest GPA who plans a career in public service. Applicants submit letter to awards committee.
 
 
Department of Psychology
 
Psychology Faculty Scholarship Fund

$500 maximum award for activities related to research and scholarship. Students should submit their application to the Psychology Department. The application should include curriculum vitae (including GPA, Awards and Honors, Research Activities, Volunteer Activities) and a one-page statement of purpose (indicating the proposed use of funds).

 
 
Department of Sociology and Anthropology
 

USA Foundation Sociology Scholarships

$750 awarded annually in the spring to two rising junior or senior sociology majors in good academic standing based on GPA, academic performance and essay on career goals.
 

USA Foundation Anthropology Scholarships

$750 awarded annually in the spring to two rising junior or senior anthropology majors in good academic standing based on GPA, academic performance and an essay on career goals.
 

Outstanding Sociology Student Award

$200 awarded each spring to the top senior sociology student(s) as determined by faculty committee taking in consideration GPA higher than 3.4, commitment to the discipline and other accomplishments.
 

Outstanding Anthropology Student Award

$200 awarded each spring to the top senior anthropology student(s) with GPA higher than 3.4, commitment to the discipline and other accomplishments.
 

Outstanding Gerontology Award

$200 awarded each spring to the top gerontology student(s) as determined by faculty committee.
 

Sociology Student Paper Award

$50 awarded annually in the Spring Semester to the best student paper in sociology submitted to competition and judged by a faculty committee.
 

Anthropology Student Paper Award

$50 annually in the Spring Semester to the best student paper in anthropology submitted to competition and judged by a faculty committee.
 
 
Department of Visual Art
 

Visual Arts Memorial Scholarship

The Department of Visual Arts will award approximately $800 to a freshman or sophomore Visual Arts major. The scholarship will be awarded in the Spring semester and is not renewable. Portfolio and transcripts are required. Please contact the Department for more information about the scholarship.
 

Robert Snell Scholarship

Two scholarships of at least $1,000 will be awarded to students who have reached junior standing and are majoring in the Department of Visual Arts. This is a need based scholarship requiring a 3.0 GPA. The scholarship will be awarded in the Spring semester and is not renewable. Portfolio and transcript are required.
