CJ 205 Introduction to Criminal Justice 3 cr
A review of the system for the delivery of Criminal Justice
services in the U.S. and an analysis of operational practices at the
major criminal justice decision stages. Prerequisite: PSC 130
CJ 301 Criminal Justice Policies 3 cr
An examination of theoretical explanations of criminal phenomena
and an analysis of the impact of such theories on public policy decisions.
Prerequisites: PSC 130 and CJ 205.
CJ 305 Modern Police Functions 3 cr
An advanced survey of law enforcement, concentrating on the
police with emphasis on functions (law enforcement, order maintenance,
and public service) and responsibilities, including organizational
and managerial aspects of policing in American society. Prerequisites:
PSC 130 and CJ 205.
CJ 310 Introduction to Political Inquiry 3 cr
Examines the concepts and techniques of systematic political
analyses. (Identical to PSC 130). Prerequisites: PSC 130 and CJ 205.
CJ 315 Criminal Law 3 cr
A study of the origins and nature of the acts that constitute
crimes with a detailed examination of the elements of certain criminal
offense. Prerequisites: PSC 130 and CJ 205.
CJ 320 Introduction to Security 3 cr
The historical, philosophical, and legal basis of security.
The role of security in modern society. A survey of the administrative,
personnel, and physical aspects of the security field. Prerequisites:
PSC 130 and CJ 205.
CJ 330 Judicial Process (W) 3 cr
The study of American judicial process at the federal and
state court levels. (Identical to PSC 330). Prerequisites: PSC 130
and CJ 205 or permission of program director.
CJ 331 Constitutional Law I 3 cr
Principles of constitutional powers and liberties will be
examined through an analysis of decisions and opinions by the U.S.
Supreme Court. (Identical to PSC 331). Prerequisites: PSC 130 and
CJ 205 or permission of program director.
CJ 332 Constitutional Law II 3 cr
An examination of constitutional principles under the Fourteenth
and First Amendments and through an analysis of decisions and opinions
by the U.S. Supreme Court. (Identical to PSC 332). Prerequisites:
PSC 130 and CJ 205 or permission of program director.
CJ 374 Policies & Procedures of Corrections 3 cr
An overview of the policies and procedures of major correctional
systems and methods of treatment of offenders. Prerequisites: PSC
130 and CJ 205.
CJ 375 Correctional Counseling 3 cr
Analysis, selection, and implementation of treatment approaches
and techniques used with juveniles and adult offenders. Prerequisites:
PSC 130, CJ 205 and 374 or permission of program director.
CJ 410 Criminal Procedure I 3 cr
An examination of constitutional criminal procedure concerning
the laws of arrest, search, and seizure and their implications in
the admissibility of evidence during the subsequent trial of the defendant.
Prerequisites: PSC 130, CJ 205 and 305 or permission of program director.
CJ 411 Criminal Procedure II 3 cr
An examination of constitutional issues in criminal procedure
concerning pre-trial and trial, and post-conviction proceeding. Should
be taken concurrently with or subsequently to CJ 41. Prerequisites:
PSC 130, CJ 205, 305 or 315; and CJ 410 or permission of program director.
CJ 415 Criminal Investigations 3 cr
Explores criminal investigation procedures including theory
of investigation, case presentation, interrogation, and special problems
in criminal investigation. Prerequisites: PSC 130, CJ 205 and 305,
or permission of program director.
CJ 416 Survey of Criminalistics 3 cr
Survey of scientific crime detection methods; crime scene
search, identification, and preservation of evidence; uses of the
laboratory for criminal investigation. Prerequisites: PSC 130, CJ
205, 415 or permission of program director.
CJ 420 Alternative Sentencing (W) 3 cr
Examines alternatives to incarceration for offenders with
emphasis on current research. Prerequisites: PSC 130, CJ 205 and 374
or permission of program director.
CJ 430 Rights of the Confined (W) 3 cr
Survey of issues and problems concerning "due process"
and "liberty" in correctional and mental institutions. Prerequisites:
PSC 130, CJ 205, 374 or 315; or permission of program director.
CJ 431 Rights of Youth 3 cr
Survey of issues and problems concerning the rights of youth.
Prerequisites: PSC 130, CJ 205, 315 or 435, or permission of program
director.
CJ 435 Juvenile Justice Administration 3 cr
A study of statutory law and criminal justice system practices
and programs as they relate to the administration of juvenile justice.
Prerequisites: PSC 130 and CJ 205.
CJ 436 Policy Choices in Child Abuse 3 cr
A presentation of current research on child abuse and child
neglect. Prerequisites: PSC 130, CJ 205 and 435, or permission of
program director.
CJ 440 Advanced Studies in Public Policy 3 cr
Advanced study of the trends in the sub-field of public policy,
major themes, or more specialized treatment of a specific area. May
be repeated for credit when content varies. (Identical to PSC 440)
Prerequisites: PSC 130 and CJ 205.
CJ 450 Criminal Justice and Community Relations (W) 3 cr
A presentation of current research on a wide range of topics
that impact on the relationship of police and the community. Prerequisites:
PSC 130 and CJ 205.
CJ 460 Criminal Justice Planning 3 cr
A study of techniques and practices currently and historically
utilized by the various agencies responsible for articulating criminal
justice standards and goals in the U.S. Prerequisites: PSC 130 and
CJ 205.
CJ 475 Crime Analysis 3 cr
An examination of the process by which criminal justice data
is analyzed by agencies within the criminal justice system for the
purpose of assisting in strategic and tactical decision making. Particular
attention will be directed toward the quality of data, the variety
of analytic methods available, and barriers that impede the use of
information derived from the analytic process. Prerequisites: PSC
130, CJ 205, 305 and 310, or permission of program director.
CJ 484 Political Corruption 3 cr
Study of the causes and consequences of political corruption
from a comparative and national perspective. Special attention is
given to corruption in the area of criminal justice. Prerequisite:
PSC 130, or IS 100, or CJ 205. (Identical to PSC 484).
CJ 485 Comparative Criminal Justice Systems 3 cr
A review of cultural influences on penal codes, crime rates,
crime control methods, and organizational structures of the delivery
of criminal justice services in selected countries. Prerequisites:
PSC 130 and CJ 205.
CJ 490 Special Topics 3 cr
Study of a significant topic, problem, or issue in criminal
justice administration. May be repeated once for credit when the content
varies. Prerequisite: CJ 205.
CJ 492 Seminar (W) 3 cr
An investigation of critical issues and concepts in criminal
justice with special attention to the requirements for research and
professional work. Frequent written work required. Prerequisites:
PSC 130, CJ 205 and senior status.
CJ 494 Directed Studies 1-6 cr
Directed study and research. Prerequisites: PSC 130, CJ 205
and consent of department chair.
CJ 496 Professional Studies: Internship 3-12 cr
Relates the participant’s classroom studies with occupational
and professional experiences in an approved criminal justice agency.
Written reports required. Course may be repeated for a maximum of
twelve hours credit. Prerequisites: PSC 130, CJ 205. Open only to
CJ majors and minors with permission of department chair.
