Medical Training Web Site EMT 110 First Responder 3 cr A skills approach in helping the student to intervene in any medical or traumatic emergency situation before the emergency personnel arrive. Emphasis is placed on care of the airway, CPR, control of bleeding, splinting and bandaging, and overall management. EMT 200 Basic Emergency Care 6 cr Includes all required modules of the 1994 EMT Basic National Standard Curriculum Patient assessment, airway management, hemorrhage control, management of fractures, care of special injuries, emergency childbirth, environmental emergencies, transportation of the sick and injured, and radio communications. Prerequisite: AHA BLS for Health Care Providers. Corequisite: EMT 205. EMT 205 Basic Emergency Clinical Internship 1 cr Pre-hospital care and transportation of the sick and injured using principles of basic life support, correlated with emergency room experience. Time distributed between emergency room, ambulance, communications center, and interfacility transport vehicle. EMT 206 Basic Skills Laboratory 1 cr Basic Emergency Medical Technician Skill practicum. Designed to allow Basic EMT students extensive practice of required psychomotor skills. EMT 210 Medical Terminology 2 cr Medical vocabulary including prefixes, suffixes and their etymological derivation. Proper pronunciation is stressed as well as logic, grammar, and spelling. EMT 215 Human Systems and Patient Assessment 3 cr An overview of the human body and its systems. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of the functions of human systems and subsystems. EMT 290 Special Topics 1-3 cr Selected topics in Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Response Training. May be repeated for credit when course content varies. EMT 320 Intermediate Emergency Care 6 cr Intermediate Emergency Care is based on the Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate National Standard Curriculum. In this course, the student will focus on roles and responsibilities, EMS systems, medical/legal considerations of prehospital care, and EMS communications. Patient care will focus on initial management and assessment, airway and ventilation, pathophysiology of shock, to include management and intervention techniques for prehospital care. Advanced airway management and IV therapy are a major component of this course as the student is prepared for the National Registry Intermediate examination. EMT 330 EMT Electrocardiology 3 cr Dysrhythmia interpretation in Lead II EKG, cardiac-cell electrophysiology, relating the theory of common cardiac disease with non-lethal, as well as, death-producing dysrhythmia. Rapid recognition, therapeutic management and defibrillation techniques are emphasized. EMT 360 Intermediate Skills Laboratory 2 cr Advanced out of hospital skill practicum. Designed to integrate all previously learned theory, management concepts and behavioral objectives of the National Standard Paramedic training curriculum. EMT 370 Intermediate Internship 6 cr Supervised clinical and field experiences emphasizing patient care in the hospital setting, and with an out of hospital Advanced Life Support service. EMT 394 Directed Studies 1-3 cr Directed study, under the guidance of a faculty advisor, of a topic in the fields of Emergency Medical Services or Emergency Response Training. Requires permission of department chair. EMT 435 EMT-Pharmacology 6 cr Close adherence to the National Standard Paramedic Training Curriculum Pharmacology Modules. Includes drug classification and clinical use of drugs which act on various body systems; therapeutic effects, indications, side-effects, toxicity, precautions, and contraindications. Dosage calculations, routes of administration, IV mixtures and compatibilities, Alabama law and the paramedic responsibilities pertaining to drug administration. EMT 445 EMT Paramedic 6 cr Prehospital management of medical emergencies for the adult, pediatric and geriatric patient. Prehospital intervention and transportation of the acute emotionally disturbed patient with regard to legalities, safety, and responsibility of the EMT. Biotelemetry and radio procedures for transmission of physical findings for the required physician control. Course concludes with skills and knowledge integration of all levels of EMT that coincides with the Department of Transportation National Standard Training Guide for Paramedic Curriculum. EMT 460 Paramedic Skills Laboratory 2 cr Advanced out of hospital skill practicum. Designed to integrate all previously learned theory, management concepts and behavioral objectives of the National Standard Paramedic training curriculum. EMT 470 Paramedic Internship 6 cr Supervised clinical and field experiences emphasizing patient care in the hospital setting, and with an out of hospital Advanced Life Support services focusing on paramedic skills. EMT 480 Advanced Cardiac Life Support 3 cr Course based on American Heart Association’s ACLS program. Includes in depth review of all cases required for a full ACLS course. Recommended for health care providers and health care provider students. Prerequisite: EMT 100 or equivalent (BCLS HCP). EMT 490 Special Topics 1-3 cr Selected topics in Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Response Training. Topics will vary according to needs and interest of students. Course may be repeated for credit when content varies. EMT 494 Directed Studies 1-3 cr Directed study, under the guidance of a faculty advisor, of a topic in the fields of Emergency Medical Services or Emergency Response Training. Requires permission of department chair. |
