CONDUCTING

MUT 361 Fundamentals of Conducting 3 cr

Basic baton technique; simple and complex rhythms; score reading; practical choral and instrumental conducting techniques. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 362 Instrumental Conducting 3 cr

Advanced baton technique; psychology of rehearsal; interpretative and conducting techniques for instrumental organizations. Prerequisite: MUT 361 or equivalent.

MUT 364 Choral Conducting and Literature 3 cr

Advanced conducting with attention to the harmonica and formal analysis of choral works; special emphasis on performance practice. Prerequisite: MUT 361.

NOTE: A placement test is required of all incoming students, whether freshman or transfer. See Placement in Music Theory.

MUT 112 Basic Music Theory I 3 cr

Elementary part-writing in two, three, and four voices. Sight-singing, ear-training, and keyboard harmony. Must be taken in sequence. Prerequisite: Satisfactory score on placement test.

MUT 113 Basic Music Theory II 3 cr

Elementary part-writing in two, three, and four voices. Sight-singing, ear-training, and keyboard harmony. Must be taken in sequence. Prerequisite: MUT 112.

MUT 212 Intermediate Music Theory I 3 cr

A continuation of elementary theory. Chromatic harmony and remote modulation; sight-singing, ear-training, keyboard harmony. Must be taken in sequence. Prerequisite: MUT 113.

MUT 213 Intermediate Music Theory II 3 cr

A continuation of elementary theory. Chromatic harmony and remote modulation; sight-singing, ear-training, keyboard harmony. Must be taken in sequence. Prerequisite: MUT 212.

MUT 311 Basic Counterpoint 2 cr

Elementary contrapuntal procedures in 18th century style. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 312 Music Forms and Analysis 2 cr

Standard forms of music and the development of techniques of analysis. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 314 Introduction to Composition 2 cr

Compositional techniques and the writing of original compositions for solo instruments and small ensembles. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 412 Orchestration 2 cr

The techniques of scoring for the orchestra. Offered in alternate years. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 413 Band Arranging 2 cr

The techniques of scoring for the modern concert wind band. Offered in alternate years. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 414 16th Century Counterpoint 2 cr

Modal counterpoint in the style of the 16th century. Offered by special arrangement only. Prerequisite: MUT 213 or equivalent. 

MUT 415 Canon and Fugue 2 cr

The techniques of writing canon and fugue in tonal style. Offered in alternate years. Prerequisite: MUT 311.

MUT 417 20th Century Techniques 2 cr

Compositional techniques of the 20th century. Impressionistic, serial, and other contemporary techniques or systems. To be taken in sequence. Offered by special arrangement only. Prerequisite: MUT 213. 

MUT 418 20th Century Techniques 2 cr

Compositional techniques of the 20th century. Impressionistic, serial, and other contemporary techniques or systems. To be taken in sequence. Offered by special arrangement only. Prerequisite: MUT 417. 

MUT 419 Advanced Analysis 2 cr

Analytical techniques and problems. Offered iby special arrangement only. Prerequisite: MUT 312.

MUT 421 Composition I 3 cr

Original work in music composition. To be taken in sequence. Offered by special arrangement only. Prerequisite: MUT 314.

MUT 422 Composition II 3 cr

Original work in musical composition. To be taken in sequence. Offered by special arrangement only. Prerequisite: MUT 421.

MUT 490 Special Topics 1-3 cr

Special topics in music theory and composition. May be repeated for a maximum of six hours credit when content varies.
