PT 101 Orientation to Physical Therapy 1 cr (1)
An orientation to the physical therapy profession, college life and the physical therapy department.
 
PT 499 Senior Honors Project (H, W) 3-6 cr
Under the advice and guidance of a faculty mentor, honors students will identify and carry out a research project relevant to the field of Physical Therapy study that will lead to a formal presentation at the annual Honors Student Colloquium. The senior project will be judged and graded by three faculty members chaired by the honors mentor. This course is required for Honors recognition and may be repeated for up to six credit hours. Prerequisites: Permission of the department chair and completion of an approved project prospectus.
 
PT 500 Human Gross Anatomy I 5 cr 3(1) 3(2)
 
A detailed study of human cadaver anatomy with emphasis on the nervous, skeletal, muscle and circulatory systems of the upper and lower extremities. Includes laboratory study. Special fee.
 
PT 501 Human Gross Anatomy II 2 cr 1(1) 1(2)
A study of human cadaver anatomy with emphasis on the nervous, skeletal, muscle and circulatory systems of the head, neck and trunk regions. Includes laboratory study.
 
PT 502 Human Development Across the Life Span 1 cr 1(1)
Application of biological concepts to the normal process of human growth and aging across the life span, including neuromotor development in childhood, and changes associated with aging.
 
PT 503 Clinical Neuroscience in Rehabilitation 2 cr 2(1)
A study of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, related to areas of Physical Therapy practice.
 
PT 504 Pathophysiology 4 cr 4(1)
A physiological approach to the study of pathological changes in the human body brought about by trauma or disease.
 
PT 505 Human Learning and Patient Education 1 cr 1(1)
The principles of human learning are related to Physical Therapy evaluation and treatment, with special emphasis on the role of patient education in the management of various clinical disorders.
 
PT 506 Pharmacology in Rehabilitation 1 cr 1(1)
A study of pharmacological principles in relation to the broad field of rehabilitation, with emphasis on the possible effects of chemo-therapeutic agents on patients receiving Physical Therapy treatment.
 
PT 510 Scientific Inquiry in Rehabilitation 2 cr (1)
The application of research concepts and designs, statistical analysis and critical review of the scientific literature in the broad area of rehabilitation science. Special fee.
 
PT 511 Research Proposal Development (W) 1 cr 1(1)
The application of research concepts and methods in the preparation and presentation of a proposal for a research project.
 
PT 512 Research Project (W) 2 cr
The undertaking of a research project, including the preparation of the research results for presentation in paper and poster formats.
 
PT 513 Clinical Research - Case Studies 2 cr
In-depth data gathering and analysis obtained from case studies encountered in the clinical practicum, written from a research perspective.
 
PT 514 Research Symposium 2 cr
A research symposium focusing on a specific topic(s) each year. Students will participate in reviewing and critiquing the latest research in the designated topic(s) area.
 
PT 520 Clinical Foundations 4 cr 3(1) 2(2)
Fundamental principles and practice of basic therapeutic skills, including soft tissue massage, positioning and draping, patient transfers, assertive gait devises and wheelchair use. Includes laboratory study. Special fee.
 
PT 521 Kinesiology and Therapeutic Exercise 3 cr 2(1) 1(3)
A study of the fundamental principles and practice of therapeutic exercise, with a strong emphasis on applied kinesiology. Includes laboratory study.
 
PT 522 Electrophysical Agents in Physical Therapy 4 cr 3(1) 2(2)
The physical principles, physiological effects, therapeutic uses and clinical application of thermal, mechanical, electrical and photic energy. Includes laboratory study. Special fee.
 
PT 530 PT in Disorders 4 cr 3(1)2(2)
  of the Musculoskeletal System I  
An introduction to musculoskeletal disorders, with an emphasis on Physical Therapy evaluation of the musculoskeletal system, including the application of functional anatomy and the biomechanical analysis of human movement. Includes laboratory study.
 
PT 531 PT in Disorders 4 cr 3(1) 2(2)
  of the Musculoskeletal System II  
A continuation of PT 530, including the etiology, diagnostic procedures, medical management, and Physical Therapy evaluation and treatment of selected musculoskeletal disorders. Includes laboratory study.
 
PT 532 PT In Disorders 3 cr 2(1)
  of the Musculoskeletal System III  
A continuation of PT 531, with an emphasis on Physical Therapy treatment techniques for selected musculoskeletal disorders, including the application of education, exercise and manual techniques. Includes laboratory study.
 
PT 540 PT in Disorders of the Nervous System I 5 cr 3(1) 2(3)
A study of the principles and concepts of normal human movement and physical therapy evaluation in patients with diseases of the nervous system. This course also includes a study of neuroanatomy to correlate with neurologic disease. Includes laboratory study.

PT in Disorders of the Nervous System II 5 cr 3(1) 2(3)
A continuation of PT 540 with added emphasis on principles and concepts of Physical Therapy treatment of patients with diseases of the nervous system. Includes laboratory study.
 
PT 550 PT in Disorders of the Skin and 2 cr 2(1)
  Vascular System  
A study of skin and vascular disorders with emphasis on the principles and practice of Physical Therapy in the management of the patient with open wounds, burns, diabetes, and upper or lower limb amputation. Includes laboratory study.
 
PT 560 PT in Disorders 2 cr 1(1) 1(2)
  of the Cardiopulmonary System  
The principles and practice of Physical Therapy for patients with cardiopulmonary disease, including medical and surgical management. Includes laboratory study.
 
PT 570 PT in Specialized Areas of Practice 2 cr 2(1)
A study of the role of Physical Therapy in selected areas, such as home care, obstetrics and gynecology, industrial inquiries, ergonomics, sports medicine and other currently developing areas of practice. Includes laboratory study.
 
PT 580 PT in Contemporary Health Care Systems 2 cr 2(1)
A study of various national and international health care delivery systems, with emphasis on the philosophical principles and practical application of clinical evaluation in Physical Therapy; including principles of diagnostic testing, goal setting, treatment planning, documentation and medical terminology, together with a study of important legal, ethical and professional issues in Physical Therapy practice.
 
PT 581 Clinical Education 2 cr 2(1)
A study of the basic organizational elements in the professional practice of Physical Therapy in different health care settings, in preparation for the full time clinical practicum later in the program.
 
PT 582 Clinical Practicum I 6 cr
A planned learning experience designed to integrate previous knowledge in a full time, supervised clinical internship of nine weeks duration in Physical Therapy practice settings.
 
PT 583 Clinical Practicum II 6 cr
A continuation of PT 582 providing further supervised clinical internship of nine weeks duration in Physical Therapy service settings.
 
PT 584 Clinical Practicum III 8 cr
A continuation of PT 582 providing further supervised clinical internship of nine weeks duration in Physical Therapy service settings.
 
PT 585 Clinical Reasoning 3 cr 3(1)
A review of Physical Therapy evaluation, treatment planning and techniques in the management and education of patients with varying clinical disorders, emphasizing the clinical decision making process in light of previous clinical experiences.
 
PT 586 Organizational Management 2 cr 2(1)
  in Physical Therapy  
A study of current organizational and management principles and issues related to health care delivery systems, with special emphasis on the current and future roles of Physical Therapy.
 
PT 594 Directed Independent Study* 1 cr
An opportunity for students to undertake further study in an area of clinical interest to them. The independent study will be guided by a faculty/clinical advisor.
 
PT 595 Directed Research Study* 1 cr
An opportunity for students to undertake a directed research study guided by a faculty/ clinical advisors.
 
*Students are required to register for only one of these courses.
