UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES
Philosophy introduces the student to the more subtle aspects of
human knowledge and the search for reality. Ethics, metaphysics, the theory of knowledge,
historical studies, aesthetics, the philosophy of history, the philosophy of science, and
the philosophy of religion are included. The purpose of such studies is to bring together
the diverse elements of human knowledge into a meaningful unity.
REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN PHILOSOPHY
A minimum of 48 quarter hours in Philosophy, including PHL 121 (or
324), 241, 243; at least one of 242, 244 and at least two of 421, 431, or 461. Majors may
not count more than two 100-level courses toward the major. Other 100-level courses may be
taken as part of the total number of hours required for graduating. Twenty hours must be
taken in the 300- and 400-level courses.
The History of Philosophy requirement (241, 243, 242/244) must be completed in the first four quarters after a student files with the Department as a major.
