The Economics Program
The Economics program is designed to prepare students for
professional careers in managerial positions or for graduate study in economics or for
related fields such as law, government, administration, education, and others. Positions
in business economics and graduate study require knowledge of economics and the
application of economic tools to analyze problems for decision-making. Students may either
concentrate in economics through the College of Business and Management Studies or major
or minor in economics through the College of Arts and Sciences.
Specific areas of interest not covered by listed courses may be met by special research programs and guided individual study in ECO 494 (Directed Study in Economics).
REQUIREMENTS FOR AN ECONOMICS CONCENTRATION IN THE
COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT STUDIES
Requirements for a concentration in economics are:
ECO 214, 215 Principles of Economics I, II
(required for all BMS students)
ECO 315 Intermediate Microeconomics
ECO 316 Intermediate Macroeconomics
ECO 340 Money and Banking
ECO 491 History of Economic Thought
ST 175 Basic Statistics or equivalent (required for all BMS students) and at least twenty
credits of elective courses in economics and related fields, approved by the department,
in other courses numbered ECO 301 or above.
REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN ECONOMICS IN THE
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
Requirements for a major in Economics are a minimum of 48 quarter
hours in economics including the following:
ECO 214, 215 Principles of Economics I, II
ECO 315 Intermediate Microeconomics
ECO 316 Intermediate Macroeconomics
ECO 340 Money and Banking
ECO 491 History of Economic Thought
ST 175 Basic Statistics or the equivalent and at least twenty hours of upper-level
economics electives in other courses numbered ECO 301 or above.
REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR FOR STUDENTS OUTSIDE THE
COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
The courses designated for the minor will meet the needs of students
who desire a knowledge of economics to support major study in another field.
A minimum of 28 quarter hours in economics including ECO 214, 215, 315, 316, and twelve hours in other courses numbered 301 or above.
