ARH 100 Introduction to the Visual Arts: 4 cr
Historical Developments A survey of major periods of artistic development from Periclean Greece to the present. NOTE: This course cannot be counted toward fulfilling degree requirements of studio or art history majors. Fee.

ARH 103 Ancient Art 4 cr
Survey of art from the Prehistoric through the Roman periods. Fee.

ARH 113 Medieval Art 4 cr
Survey of art from the Early Christian through the Gothic period.

ARH 123 Renaissance and Baroque Art 4 cr
Survey of art from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Fee.

ARH 240 Nineteenth-Century European Art 4 cr
Study of the many national and international movements in the visual arts from Neo-classicism to the varied styles of the end of the century. Fee.

ARH 242 Twentieth-Century Art 4 cr
Study of the changing styles of the visual arts from the turn of the century to World War II. Fee.

ARH 243 Afro-American Art 4 cr
Investigation of the artistic products of Afro-Americans and the historical and social contexts in which they were produced. Major areas of concentration will include slavery, post-slavery, and the 20th century. Fee. Offered 1996-97 and alternate years.

ARH 244 Contemporary Art 4 cr
A study of art developments since World War II. Fee.

ARH 248 History of Photography 4 cr
A survey of the development of photography from a historical perspective. Selected photographers and their work will be evaluated both as a cultural record and distinctive art form. This course is also listed as History 285. Fee.

ARH 250 African Art 4 cr
Designed as a basic orientation to the art of Africa and the interpretation of experience as witnessed in various African visual art forms. The course will focus on the major civilizations and/or nations south of the Sahara Desert and their stylistic developments. Emphasis will be placed on the aesthetic approach of the African artist and the influence of his art on western culture. Fee. Offered 1997-98 and alternate years.

ARH 256 Indian and Southeast Asian Art 4 cr
Survey of architecture, sculpture, and painting of India and the spread of Indian art into Southeast Asia. Fee. Offered 1996-97 and alternate years.

ARH 290 Special Topics 4 cr
Different subjects or themes in Art History as announced. Course may be repeated twice when content varies, for a maximum of twelve credit hours. Fee.

ARH 304 Greek Art and Architecture 4 cr
Architecture, sculpture, and painting in Greece from the Archaic through the Hellenistic period. Fee. Offered 1996-97 and every third year.

ARH 314 Byzantine Art 4 cr
Byzantine painting, sculpture, mosaics, and architecture from the rein of Justinian in the 6th century A.D. to the Romanovs in Russia. The art of Greece, Asia Minor, the Balkans, and Russia will be considered. Fee. Prerequisite: ARH 113. Offered 1996-97 and every third year.

ARH 322 Northern Renaissance Art 4 cr
Art of Flanders, Germany, and France in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. Fee. Prerequisite: ARH 123. Offered in 1997-98 and every third year.

ARH 324 Italian Early Renaissance Art 4 cr
Art of 14th- and 15th-century Italy, with emphasis on the paintings of the Florentine and Sienese Schools. Fee. Prerequisite: ARH 123. Offered 1996-97 and every third year.

ARH 326 16th Century Italian Art 4 cr
Art of the Italian High Renaissance and Mannerist periods. Fee. Prerequisite: ARH 123. Offered 1995-96 and every third year.

ARH 330 Baroque Art of Southern Europe 4 cr
A study of the masterworks of painting, sculpture, and architecture in Italy, France, and Spain during the 17th century. Fee. Prerequisite: ARH 123. Offered 1997-98 and alternative years.

ARH 345 Arts of the United States: 1600-1900 4 cr
American painting, graphics and sculpture from the Colonial period through the 19th century. Fee. Offered 1995-96 and every third year.

ARH 346 American Architecture (W) 4 cr
American architecture from the colonial period through the 19th century revivalism. Fee. Offered 1997-98 and every third year.

ARH 347 Modern Architecture 4 cr
Twentieth-century architecture in Europe and the United States. Fee. Offered 1996-97 and every third year.

ARH 360 Traineeship in Museum Work 2 cr
Evaluated experience in museum work at the Mobile Museum of Art. Cannot be used to fulfill requirements for the art history major or minor. May be repeated twice if experience differs. Prerequisites: Twenty-four hours of art history credit and special permission of the program director.

ARH 390 Special Topics 4 cr
Different subjects or themes in Art History as announced. This course may be repeated twice when content varies, for a maximum of twelve credit hours. Fee. Prerequisites: As announced.

ARH 406 Roman Art and Architecture 4 cr
Architecture, sculpture, and painting in Rome and its empire. Fee. Offered 1997-98 and every third year.

ARH 415 Medieval Architecture 4 cr
Changing styles of architecture and architectural sculpture throughout the Middle Ages with special emphasis on France, Germany, England, Italy, and Scandinavia. Fee. Offered 1995-96 and every third year.

ARH 434 Baroque Art of Flanders and Holland 4 cr
A study of the painting of the major artists of Baroque Flanders and Holland; the work of Rubens, Rembrandt, Hals, and Vermeer, among others, will be considered. Fee. Prerequisite: ARH 123. Offered 1996-97 and alternate years.

ARH 492 Seminar (W) 4 cr
This seminar will treat variable subjects; it may be repeated twice when content varies. Fee. Prerequisite: Twelve hours of art history above the 200 level.

ARH 494 Directed Studies/Research 1-4 cr
Directed study in research methodology under the direction of a staff member. A student paper in a selected topic to be presented as an illustrated lecture. Fee. Prerequisites: ARH 103, 113, 123, and twelve additional hours in upper-level art history courses.

ARH 590 Special Topics 4 cr
Different subjects or themes in Art History as announced. This course may be repeated twice when content varies, for a maximum of twelve credit hours. Prerequisites: ARH 103, 113, 123, and twelve hours in upper-level Art History courses.
