ARS 101 Art Appreciation 4 cr
A study of the visual art, with emphasis upon developing the
student's aesthetic and perceptual skills.
ARS 121, 122 Basic Drawing I, II 4 cr each qtr
Introductory drawing courses with emphasis upon the development of
sensitivity to contour and shading of natural and man made forms and shapes, using various
drawing media. Must be taken in sequence.
ARS 123 Basic Two-Dimensional Design 4 cr
The study and application of art elements and principles. Emphasis
is on problems encountered in painting and other two-dimensional media. Fee.

A study and application of art principles to three-dimensional

ARS 235 Watercolor I 4 cr
The study of basic techniques and concepts in watercolor painting of
landscape, still-life, and figurative subjects. Prerequisites: ARS 122, 123.
ARS 241 Beginning Ceramics I 4 cr
Instruction in basic hand-building methods and techniques of working
with clay, design for traditional pottery forms, and techniques for glazing and firing.

ARS 242, 243 Beginning Ceramics II, III 4 cr each qtr
A broad introduction to basic throwing methods and techniques of
working with clay on the potter's wheel. These courses will progress from the basics of
centering and opening, to the more complex forming of lidded containers. Must be taken in
sequence. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 122, 123, 124, 241, and permission of the instructor.
ARS 250 Beginning Intaglio 4 cr
Fundamentals of making intaglio prints utilizing drypoint, etching,
aquatint, and soft ground techniques. Basic processes and use of drawing and design skills
are stressed. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 122, 123.
ARS 251 Beginning Lithography 4 cr
Fundamentals of making lithographic prints. Basic techniques and use
of drawing and design skills are stressed. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 122, 123.
ARS 252 Beginning Relief Printing 4 cr
Fundamentals of making woodcuts and other types of relief prints.
Emphasis on basic processes and techniques and applying drawing and design skills. Fee.
Prerequisites: ARS 122, 123.
ARS 253 Beginning Screen Printing 4 cr
Fundamentals of making screen prints using waterbased inks. Emphasis
on basic processes and applying drawing and design skills. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 122,

ARS 261 Beginning Sculpture I 4 cr
A basic course with additive sculpture materials dealing with
problems of mass, volume, form, and space. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 122 and 124.
ARS 262 Beginning Sculpture II 4 cr
Studio work in ceramic materials, cast stone, and metals. Processes
include building armatures, making waste molds, and casting techniques. Fee.
Prerequisites: ARS 261.
ARS 263 Beginning Sculpture III 4 cr
An introduction to basic metal working techniques, including
cutting, forming, brazing and welding, both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Fee.
Prerequisites: ARS 262, and permission of instructor.
ARS 271 Beginning Graphic Design I 4 cr
An introduction to skills and techniques used in graphic design.
Problems in design, typography, layout and use of selected materials. Fee. Prerequisites:

ARS 273 Basic Desktop Publishing for Graphic Design 4 cr
An introductory course on the fundamentals of using the Macintosh
interface and basic instruction with desktop-publishing software for graphic design
applications. Fee. Prerequisite: 2.0 grade-point average in ARS 271 and 272.
ARS 281 Introduction to Photography 4 cr
An introduction to the technical and aesthetic aspects of
photography. Students must have 35mm SLR cameras capable of being operated in the manual
exposure mode and supply light sensitive materials and processing. Primarily involves
color transparency materials. Fee.
ARS 282 Basic Photography 4 cr
Investigation of picture-making problems and control of photographic
media. Covers black and white processing and enlarging. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 123, 281.
ARS 290 Special Topics 4 cr
A studio, lecture, or seminar course treating a special medium,
subject, or theme, as announced. This course may be repeated twice when content varies,
for a maximum of twelve credit hours.

A study of the human figure using various drawing media. Fee.

ARS 323 Portrait Drawing II 4 cr
A study of the clothed figure and techniques of expressing
individual character using various drawing media. Prerequisite: ARS 223.

Development of visual statements based on concepts of 20th century
art using various drawing media. Prerequisite: ARS 225.
ARS 332, 333 Intermediate Painting I, II 4 cr each qtr
Courses designed to extend the student's knowledge of painting. The
course includes a study of recent developments in painting and painting theory.
Prerequisite: ARS 232.
ARS 335 Watercolor II 4 cr
The study of more advanced techniques and concepts in watercolor
painting of landscape, still-life, and figurative subjects. Prerequisite: ARS 235.
ARS 342, 343, 344 Intermediate Ceramics I, II, III 4 cr each

Each course continues the investigation of the plastic qualities of
clay while it encourages concentration in a particular mode of expression. In addition, a
thorough working knowledge of clay and decorative techniques, kiln loading and firing
techniques will be developed. Must be taken in sequence. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 243, and
permission of the instructor.
ARS 350 Intermediate Intaglio (A) 4 cr
Further work in making intaglio prints. Color printing and other
experimental processes are introduced. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 250.
ARS 351 Intermediate Lithography (A) 4 cr
Further work in making lithographs. Color printing and other
processes are introduced. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 251.
ARS 352 Intermediate Relief Printing (A) 4 cr
The use of color woodcut and other types of relief printing to
visually communicate ideas and express feelings. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 252.
ARS 353 Intermediate Screen Printing (A) 4 cr
Making multi-colored screenprints using photo emulsion, painted, and
handcut stencils. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 253.
ARS 354 Intermediate Intaglio (B) 8 cr
Intense work in making intaglio prints including black-and-white,
color and other experimental works with emphasis upon developing individual approaches.
Students are expected to work sixteen hours a week in the studio in addition to scheduled
class times. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 250; Two of ARS 251, 252, 253; Primary Concentration
in Printmaking.
ARS 355 Intermediate Lithography (B) 8 cr
Intense work in making black-and-white and color lithographs with
emphasis upon developing individual approaches and acquiring more technical skill.
Students are expected to work sixteen hours a week in the studio in addition to scheduled
class times. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 251; Two of ARS 250, 252, 253; Primary Concentration
in Printmaking.
ARS 356 Intermediate Relief Printing (B) 8 cr
More complex work in making color woodcuts and other relief prints
using single and multiple block processes to develop individual approaches. Students are
expected to work sixteen hours a week in the studio in addition to scheduled class times.
Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 252; two of ARS 250, 251, 253; Primary Studio Concentration in
Printmaking.
ARS 357 Intermediate Screen Printing (B) 8 cr
More complex work making color screenprints using a variety of
stencil making processes. Emphasis is on the development of greater technical skill and
development of individual approaches. Students are expected to work sixteen hours a week
in the studio in addition to scheduled class times. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 253; two of
ARS 250, 251, 252; Primary Concentration in Printmaking.
ARS 361 Intermediate Sculpture I 4 cr
Advanced mold making techniques with plaster, rubber, and fiberglass
materials. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 263.
ARS 362 Intermediate Sculpture II 4 cr
Basic carving techniques with subtractive media, such as wood,
limestone, and marble. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 361.
ARS 363 Intermediate Sculpture III 4 cr
Studio work with synthetic materials such as styrofoam, fiberglass,
epoxies, and Plexiglas. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 362.
ARS 372 Graphic Processes I 4 cr
Typography, copyfitting, and the preparation of mechanical art for
reproduction and printing. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 272.
ARS 373 Graphic Processes II 4 cr
Design, typography, page layout, and basic pre-press techniques on
the Macintosh using current graphics software and peripherals. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS
273, ARS 372.
ARS 376 Illustration 4 cr
Conceptual approaches, materials and techniques used in solving
illustration problems. Prerequisite: ARS 272 and a 200-level drawing course.
ARS 377 Advanced Illustration 4 cr
Use of illustration to solve graphic design problems, emphasizing
editorial illustration. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 376.
ARS 381 Problems in Photography 4 cr
The course will explore the special problems in black-and-white
photographic practice which confront more advanced students. Individual student projects
will be designed in consultation with the instructor. May be repeated once for credit.
Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 282.
ARS 394 Directed Studies 4 cr
Directed projects in approved studio areas or topics, supervised by
a studio faculty member. Prerequisites: Junior standing and permission of the instructor.
ARS 396 Professional Practices for the Artist (W) 4 cr
A workshop to prepare the student for employment, graduate school,
or a professional career in the visual arts. Projects include resume and news release
writing, studio design, exhibition and other forms of presentation, and photography of art
work. Field trips to studios and talks by professionals supplement class work. Fee.
Prerequisites: EH 101 or USA 010, EH 102, and Junior standing.

Individual problems with the human figure as subject, emphasizing
concept, composition and media. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 322.
ARS 423 Portrait Drawing III 4 cr
A study of the several portrait formats in various media with
emphasis on developing personal approaches to expressing the individual character of the
model. Prerequisite: ARS 323.
ARS 425 Conceptual Drawing III 4 cr
Development of personal visual statements in drawing media.
Prerequisite: ARS 325.
ARS 432, 433 Advanced Painting I, II 4 cr each qtr
Advanced work in painting with traditional and experimental media.
Prerequisite: ARS 333.
ARS 435 Watercolor III 4 cr
The study of watercolor as a medium of personal expression.

These courses deal with the continued development of a personal
aesthetic in ceramics. The refinement of skills and techniques needed to realize these

ARS 453 Advanced Screen Printing (A) 4 cr
Advanced individual work in making multiple-colored screen prints.

ARS 461 Advanced Sculpture I 4 cr
Studio work with emphasis on the techniques of casting and finishing
works in acrylic, epoxy and polyester resins. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 363.
ARS 462, 463 Advanced Sculpture II, III 4 cr each qtr
Individual problems in selected media involving studio work and
research into historic and contemporary uses of each medium. Must be taken in sequence.
Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 461.
ARS 471 Photo-Graphics 4 cr
A course designed to develop further the ability to combine
photographic images, copy, typography, retouching, and graphic techniques on the computer.
Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 373, or permission of the instructor.
ARS 472 Graphic Design Studio I 4 cr
A workshop for students to carry designs from initial concept
through to finished pieces. Emphasis on creating a body of work of professional quality.
Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 372, 373.
ARS 473 Graphic Design Studio II 4 cr
A continuation of Graphic Design Studio I with an increasing
complexity of design projects. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 472.
ARS 488 Graphic Design Portfolio and Presentation 4 cr
Preparation of a portfolio of professional quality and the
presentation of that portfolio to a faculty committee. Required for students whose primary
concentration is Graphic Design. Fee. Prerequisites: ARS 473 and acceptance in the B.F.A.
program.
ARS 490 Special Topics 1-4 cr
An advanced studio, lecture, or seminar course treating a special
medium, subject, or theme, as announced. May be repeated when content varies, for a
maximum of twelve credit hours. Prerequisite: Senior standing and permission of the
instructor.
ARS 494 Directed Studies 4, 8 or 12 cr
Directed work in approved studio areas or topics under the direction
of a studio faculty member. May be repeated twice for a maximum of twelve credit hours.
Prerequisites: Senior standing and permission of the instructor.
ARS 496 Professional Studies: Internship 4 cr
Students intern in specialized area of interest. Written report
required.
ARS 499 Senior Thesis 8 cr
An independent project of creative work in the area of the Primary
Studio Concentration (Option 2) or in the area of one or more Secondary Studio
Concentration (Option 3) with the guidance of 1-3 faculty advisors. The student is
required to work twenty-four hours a week in the studio. The thesis must be publicly
exhibited. It will be evaluated by the entire Art faculty. Prerequisites: Completion of a
Primary Studio Concentration or two Secondary Studio Concentrations and permission of the
department chair.
ARS 520 Graduate Drawing 2 or 4 cr
Intensive course in drawing as both a set of skills and as a
creative medium of expression. May be repeated for a total of twelve credit hours.
Prerequisite: ARS 422 or 423 or bachelor's degree in art or art education.
ARS 530 Graduate Painting 2 or 4 cr
Intensive work in painting with traditional or contemporary media,
subjects, and concepts. May be repeated for a total of twelve credit hours. Prerequisite:
ARS 433 or bachelor's degree in art or art education.
ARS 540 Graduate Ceramics 2 or 4 cr
Intensive study of clay as a creative medium of expression. Problems
of form, volume, space, texture, decoration, and function will be investigated in their
relation to selected ceramic processes and building techniques. May be repeated for total
of twelve credit hours. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 444 or bachelor's degree in art or art
education.
ARS 550 Graduate Printmaking 2 or 4 cr
Intensive investigation of visual, expressive, or technical problems
in a selected printmaking medium. May be repeated for a total of twelve credit hours. Fee.
Prerequisite: Senior-level course in a printmaking medium or bachelor's degree in art or
art education.
ARS 560 Graduate Sculpture 2 or 4 cr
Intensive investigation of problems of mass, volume, form and space
using one or more selected sculptural media. May be repeated for a total of twelve credit
hours. Fee. Prerequisite: ARS 463 or bachelor's degree in art or art education.
ARS 590 Special Topics 4 cr
A graduate course treating a special medium, subject, or theme, as
announced. May be repeated twice when content varies, for a maximum of twelve credit
hours. Prerequisites: Forty-eight hours in Studio Art or a bachelor's degree in art or art
education.
