CED 495 Principles of Behavior Modification 4 cr
Provides teachers, counselors, administrators, and other specialists
with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote positive behavioral change in others.
CED 571 Program Planning, Development and 4 cr
Management for Counselors The organization, administration, and
management of the work of the counselor. Includes defining the functions and
responsibilities of the counselor. Communication with other professionals and clients
concerning aspects of educational and community needs, with emphasis upon levels at which
the counselor expects to work. Needs of clients and/or pupils in a given population
including multicultural differences. Relating programs to the needs and backgrounds of
clients and/or pupils. Includes aspects of the budget, public relations, consultation,
ethical and legal issues, and organization and administration of the total counseling
program.
CED 572 Principles and Theories of Counseling 4 cr
Includes a study of various theories, principles, and techniques in
counseling. Opportunity is provided for the implementation of counseling techniques
through the study of case studies and transcripts.
CED 573 Educational and Occupational Information 4 cr
Systems, Materials and Resources To assist individuals to formulate
plans for employment and for further occupational training for eventual employment,
students need to master information bases of the nature, sources and approaches to
educational and vocational opportunities. Each student evaluates the techniques for
discovering, collecting, filing, interpreting, evaluating, and using material and
resources for such counseling. Experiences in various methods of management and
presentation of an information service to individuals and groups across a gamut of
client-age levels, socio-cultural backgrounds and developmental needs; includes
consultation services with teachers, parents, resource personnel, and program
administrators relative to client need for development and/or career information.
CED 574 Group Counseling and Group Guidance 4 cr
Procedures Includes both the theory and
practice of group counseling, counseling with clients of diverse backgrounds, and
selecting group work suitable to multicultural needs. Emphasis is on the developmental
level and background of clients with which the counselor expects to work.
CED 575 Introduction to Community Rehabilitation 4 cr
Introduces the student to a broad field of community rehabilitation.
Included is the history, philosophy, present activities and future trends in
rehabilitation. A multidisciplinary approach to the study of the "whole person"
is emphasized and direct contact with community social service agencies is an integral
part of the course.
CED 576 Supervised Practicum in Counseling 4 cr
This course requires the student to demonstrate the appropriate use
of a variety of counseling skills and techniques. Audio and video tapes of individual
counseling sessions are critiqued in class by the instructor. Prerequisite: Candidacy, CED
586, and special permission of the instructor.
CED 577 Vocational Evaluation and Job Placement 4 cr
This course offers the student both theory and experience in the
determination of work potential in the person with a handicap. In addition, the student
learns and practices the principles of vocational surveys, job-analysis, job placement,
and follow-up.
CED 578 Supervised Practicum in Group Counseling 4 cr
Supervised practice is provided in group counseling and other group
work experience appropriate for a counselor. Practicum experience is offered in the
educational setting in which the student plans to work. Prerequisite: Special permission
of the instructor.
CED 579 Social and Psychological Aspects of Disability 4 cr
The theory, research, and practices in related disciplines which
contribute to an understanding of human disability. Field work and case study serve as
integrating activities.
CED 580 Student Personnel Services 4 cr
Included is a survey of historical developments and current
practices in student personnel services in post-high school educational institutions. The
organization, administration, and functions of the various services are stressed.
CED 581 Rehabilitation Case Management 4 cr
This course provides for critical analysis of representative
rehabilitation case studies. Case records are used as a basis for developing an
understanding of the clients with handicaps and their problems, the rehabilitation case
work process, diagnosis, eligibility requirements, and the provision of services.
CED 582 Counseling and Guidance in the 4 cr
Elementary School A study of the
application of counseling and guidance principles and practices in the elementary school
setting. The roles of elementary counselor, teacher, and administrator will be included,
as well as program appraisals and research reviews.
CED 583 Individual and Group Testing Laboratory 4 cr
Supervised experience in the selection, administration, and scoring
of educational and psychological tests, and the interpretation and reporting of test
results. Prerequisite: EPY 555.
CED 584 Seminar in Ethical and Legal Issues in 4 cr
Counseling Ethical standards of the
profession and current legal issues will be examined in the context of case studies and
current literature. Critical analysis by each student of legal and ethical issues faced by
counselors and psychometrists will be stressed.
CED 585 Medical Aspects of Rehabilitation 4 cr
Concerned with imparting medical terminology and orienting the
student to the basic body systems and common diagnostic categories encountered in
rehabilitation. Common symptomology, treatment, and medical management techniques of
rehabilitation and physical medicine are emphasized. The course develops the student's
ability to appraise the client's functional limitations and to interpret the and use
medical information in planning for the client's rehabilitation.
CED 586 Analysis of Counseling Processes 4 cr
The course provides opportunities for the critical in-depth
examination and analysis of counseling processes through the use of counseling tapes and
printed dialogue. Emphasis is placed on the processes involved in developing and
maintaining the essential elements of the helping relationship. Counselor-counselee
dialogue is analyzed in terms of appropriateness of counselor response, understanding of
counselee expression, and movement toward resolution of the problem. Prerequisite:
Candidacy.
CED 587 Behavioral Counseling 4 cr
Study and practice in behavior techniques and theories as they
pertain to behavioral counseling, behavior modification and token economy.
CED 588 Career Planning and Placement 4 cr
Emphasis is on facilitating the development of understanding in
students and clients of the relationships between self-concept, interests, life-style,
abilities, experience, physical capacities, and career development; assisting counselors,
teachers, administrators in implementing a career development program for individuals with
diverse backgrounds and ages; developing a placement service utilizing school, employer,
and community resources for placement of individuals for further education or employment.
CED 589 Seminar in Rehabilitation Issues 4 cr
This course provides an opportunity for the student to explore the
implications of rehabilitation research and current theories; to investigate professional
issues; and to further develop areas of special rehabilitative interest.
CED 590 Special Topics 4 cr
Guided supervision in the completion of learning tasks in counselor
education such as program design and revision, study of a significant topic, theory,
model, and supervision of selected learning activities to acquire specific counseling and
testing skills.
CED 594 Directed Study and Research 2, 4 cr
Students explore through directed study problems of issues of
special interest or significance in Counselor Education. Not more than four quarter hours
of any departmental 594 courses can be accepted toward a degree program.
CED 595 Internship 4, 8, 12 cr
The internship is a supervised learning experience in a work setting
similar to that in which a counselor or school psychometrist eventually will be employed.
The internship provides the student with an opportunity to apply the theories and concepts
learned during the graduate program. Not more than 12 hours may be taken. Prerequisite:
Special permission of the instructor.
CED 599 Thesis 1-12 cr
A student selects a project, study, or investigation which is
related to an area of specialization in Counselor Education. The project forms a basis for
the thesis. A thesis committee will provide direction during the writing of the thesis.
CED 672 Advanced Counseling Theory and Practice 4 cr
An advanced study of counseling theories and strategies as they
apply to practical situations. Prerequisite: CED 572.
CED 674 Advanced Theory and Practice in 4 cr
Group Counseling This course provides
the student with advanced skills and knowledge designed to facilitate working with groups.
The course emphasizes group theory, research, and participation in group dynamics.
Prerequisite: CED 574.
CED 676 Advanced Practicum in Counseling 4 cr
Supervised field experience in appropriate settings. Required weekly
seminar. Prerequisite: Special permission of the instructor.
CED 678 Negotiation Training 4 cr
This course focuses on the development of negotiation, conflict
resolution, and communication skills needed to be effective in resolving a variety of
training-related problems. Students will have an opportunity to research and practice the
skills in the negotiation process by applying communication and conflict resolution
techniques in simulated and real situations.
CED 690 Special Topics 4 cr
Guided supervision in the completion of learning tasks in counselor
education such as program design and revision, study of a significant topic, theory,
model, and supervision of selected learning activities to acquire specific counseling and
testing skills.
CED 694 Directed Study and Research 2, 4 cr
Students explore through directed study problems and issues of
special interest or significance in Counselor Education. Not more than four quarter hours
of any departmental 694 courses can be accepted toward a degree program.
CED 699 Research Project 4-12 cr
A supervised field project, study, or investigation in the Counselor
Specialist Program, serving as the culminating experience in the program. Applying
concepts and skills learned during the sixth-year program, the student will conduct an
investigation and prepare a field project report in standard form. Prerequisites: CED 576
and special permission of the instructor.
