NOTE: The following course, CJ 205, Introduction to Criminal Justice, is prerequisite to all subsequent courses in Criminal Justice.

CJ 205 Introduction to Criminal Justice 4 cr
A review of the system for the delivery of Criminal Justice services in the U.S. and an analysis of operational practices at the major criminal justice decision stages. (Identical to PSC 205.)

CJ 241 Criminology 4 cr
The nature of causation of criminal behavior. Evaluation of theories and research. (Identical to SY 241.)

CJ 250 Comparative Criminal Justice Systems 4 cr
A review of cultural influences on penal codes, crime rates, crime control methods, and organizational structures for the delivery of criminal justice services in selected countries.

CJ 301 Policy Responses to Criminal Behavior 4 cr
An examination of theoretical explanations of criminal phenomena and an analysis of the impact of such theories on public policy decisions. Prerequisite: CJ 241.

CJ 305 Modern Police Functions 4 cr
An advanced survey of law enforcement, concentrating on the police with emphasis on functions (law enforcement, order maintenance, and public service) and responsibilities, including organizational and managerial aspects of policing in American society.

CJ 310 Introduction to Political Inquiry 4 cr
Examines the concepts and techniques of systematic political analysis. (Identical to PSC 310.)

CJ 315 Criminal Law 4 cr
Classification and analysis of crimes and criminal acts in general, and the examination of selected criminal offenses.

CJ 320 Introduction to Security 4 cr
The historical, philosophical, and legal basis of security. The role of security in modern society. A survey of the administrative, personnel, and physical aspects of the security field.

CJ 334 Public Administration (W) 4 cr
National, state, and local administration, with special attention to the relationship between formal agency structure and policy execution. (Identical to PSC 334.)

CJ 375 Correctional Counseling 4 cr
Analysis, selection, and implementation of treatment approaches and techniques used with juveniles and adult offenders.

CJ 400 Evidence 4 cr
A case-method study of the law governing presentation of evidence in the trial of a case with emphasis on the relevancy of evidence and the hearsay rule and exceptions to it.

CJ 410 Criminal Procedure I 4 cr
An examination of constitutional criminal procedure concerning the laws of arrest, search, and seizure.

CJ 411 Criminal Procedure II 4 cr
An examination of constitutional criminal procedure concerning pre-trial and trail processes. Prerequisites: CJ 205 and CJ 410 or permission of the Program Director.

CJ 415 Criminal Investigation 4 cr
Criminal investigation procedures including theory of investigation, case presentation, interrogation, and special problems in criminal investigation.

CJ 416 Survey of Criminalistics 4 cr
Survey of scientific crime detection methods; crime scene search, identification, and preservation of evidence; uses of the laboratory in criminal investigation. Prerequisite: CJ 415.

CJ 430 Rights of the Confined (W) 4 cr
Selected issues and problems concerning "due process" and "liberty" in correctional and mental institutions.

CJ 431 Rights of Youth 4 cr
Selected issues and problems concerning the rights of youth.

CJ 435 Juvenile Justice Policy 4 cr
A study of statutory law and criminal justice system practices and programs as they relate to the field of juvenile justice at the federal, state and local levels. Included will be the role of private organizations in the formation and implementation of juvenile justice policy.

CJ 440 Court Administration 4 cr
A consideration of modern court administration in theory and practice. (Identical to PSC 440.)

CJ 450 Criminal Justice and Community Relations 4 cr
The role of criminal justice agencies in a changing community. Covers both the historical and contemporary aspects of riot and dissent and examines the emerging patterns of active involvement in community relations by law enforcement agencies.

CJ 460 Criminal Justice Planning 4 cr
A study of techniques and practices currently and historically utilized by the various agencies responsible for articulating criminal justice standards and goals in the U.S.

CJ 490 Special Topics 4 cr
Study of a significant topic, problem, or issue in criminal justice administration. May be repeated once for credit when the content varies.

CJ 492 Seminar (W) 4 cr
An investigation of critical issues and concepts in criminal justice administration with special attention to the requirements of professional work and research. Independent research and writing will be emphasized. Prerequisites: CJ 205 and Senior standing or permission of the department chair.

CJ 494 Directed Studies 1-4 cr
Under the guidance of a faculty member, the student will pursue directed research or readings on an approved topic in criminal justice administration. May be repeated, as long as the topic changes, to a maximum of eight quarter hours. Prerequisite: Permission of the department chair.

CJ 496 Professional Studies: Internship 4-16 cr
Relates the participant's classroom studies with occupational and professional experiences in an approved criminal justice agency. Written reports required. Prerequisite: Only open to Criminal Justice majors and minors with permission of the department chair. Course may be repeated for a maximum of sixteen hours credit.
