CSD 600 Doctoral Colloquium 1 cr
Seminar designed to provide a forum for presentation and discussion
of faculty and doctoral student research projects. Other topics may include: academic
teaching and learning styles and grant writing. Must be repeated prior to candidacy.
CSD 661 Advanced Instrumentation Techniques 6 cr
Basic circuit design and use of laboratory instrumentation; emphasis
on filtering, recording and playback, and analog and digital conversions and analysis.
Prerequisite: SPA 521 and 570, or equivalent.
CSD 662 Studies in Speech Science 4 cr
Basic acoustics and speech production principles, including acoustic
and physiologic phonetics. Prerequisite: SPA 521 or equivalent.
CSD 663 Studies in Hearing Science 4-6 cr
Advanced study of psychological and physiological acoustics.
Laboratory exercises are included to enable students to develop programming and research
skills needed for independent scientific investigation in psychoacoustics. Prerequisite:
SPA 570 or equivalent.
CSD 664 Studies in Language Science 4 cr
Intensive study of the theoretical foundations underlying syntax,
semantics, pragmatics, phonology, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics,
and applied pragmatics. Prerequisites: SPA 523 or equivalent.
CSD 665 Studies in Communication Neuroscience 4 cr
Advanced survey of neurosciences as they relate to processes and
pathologies of human communication, including functional neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and
clinical neurology. Interdisciplinary research paradigms will also be discussed.
Prerequisites: SPA 581 and 582, or equivalent.
CSD 671 Seminar in Speech Science 4 cr
Intensive literature review of current knowledge and research in
speech production, including normal processes and processes of disordered populations.
Topics may include acoustic phonetics, physiological phonetics, prosody and theories of
speech production and perception, articulation, fluency, and voice disorders. Must be
repeated. Prerequisite: SPA 662.
CSD 672 Seminar in Language Science 4 cr
Intensive literature review of current methods, problems, and
strategies in language research. Topics may include normal language acquisition,
language-learning disorders, clinical aphasiology, and neurolinguistics. Must be repeated.
Prerequisite: SPA 664.
CSD 673 Seminar in Hearing Science 4 cr
Intensive literature review of current knowledge and research in
hearing and hearing disorders. Topics may include cochlear mechanics, complex signal
processing, electrophysiological measures, development of hearing, hearing in the elderly,
and hearing in other species. Must be repeated. Prerequisite: SPA 663.
CSD 675 Research Methods in Communication 4 cr
Sciences and Disorders Current methods
and statistical strategies used in research on communication processes. Prerequisites: ST
541 and SPA 510, or equivalent.
