DS 011 Study Skills I 4 cr
An introduction to college reading and study skills with added
instruction in vocabulary development and adjusting rates of reading.
DS 014 Writing I 4 cr
Designed to teach essential writing skills: spelling, vocabulary,
punctuation, sentence patterns, the paragraph, and the essay. Emphasis is on personal
writing. Readings from contemporary prose that provide models and examples for student
writing are required. Supplementary practice and instruction in the writing laboratory are
also required.
DS 020 Freshman Seminar 1 cr
Freshman Seminar is held for one hour weekly and provides a forum
for exchanging information about concerns of college freshmen. Sessions will provide
opportunities for discussion with DS instructors, counselors, and guest speakers.
DS 027 Mathematics I 4 cr
An individualized review of basic arithmetic skills including
operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Introduction to exponents, order
of operations, primes and multiples, scientific notation, and ratio. Required computer
lab. Prerequisite: Placement test and permission of Developmental Studies Academic
Advisor.
DS 028 Mathematics II 4 cr
A continuation of Mathematics I including an individualized review
of operations with percentages, metric and English measurement systems, and basic geometry
facts. Introduction to operations with signed numbers and linear equations and
inequalities. Required computer lab. Prerequisite: Permission of Developmental Studies
Advisor.
DS 029 Mathematics III 4 cr
A continuation of Mathematics I and II designed for remediation of
specific problems on an individual basis. Required computer lab. Prerequisite: Permission
of Developmental Studies Advisor.
DS 035 Review of Basic Mathematics Skills 4 cr
A one-quarter individualized review of basic mathematics skills.
Topics include fractions, decimals, percent, ratio, measurement, geometry, exponents,
order of operations, primes and multiples, and scientific notation. Required computer lab.
Prerequisite: Permission of Developmental Studies Advisor.
DS 068 High School Algebra Part I 4 cr
The first quarter of a two-quarter individualized review of
algebraic skills necessary for success in MA 171. Appropriate for students who have not
successfully completed high school algebra previously. Required computer lab.
Prerequisite: Placement test and permission of Developmental Studies Advisor.
DS 069 High School Algebra Part II 4 cr
The second quarter of a two-quarter individualized review of
algebraic skills necessary for success in MA 171. The combination, 068 and 069, is
equivalent to 070. Required computer lab. Prerequisite: Permission of Developmental
Studies Advisor.
DS 070 High School Algebra 4 cr
A one-quarter individualized review of algebraic skills necessary
for success in MA 171. Appropriate for students needing a quick review who have
successfully completed high school algebra. Required computer lab. Prerequisite: Placement
test and permission of Developmental Studies Advisor.
DS 090 Special Topics 2-4 cr
Designed to provide students an opportunity to study selected topics
of particular interest.
DS 094 Directed Studies 4 cr
Directed studies under the supervision of a faculty member. Directed
study in mathematics includes a required computer lab. Prerequisites: Permission of the
Program chair.
