FIN 300 Personal Finance 4 cr
General principles and techniques of finance as applied to personal
business transactions and the management of personal funds. Finance majors may not count
this course as a finance elective.
FIN 341 Business Finance I 4 cr
A survey course covering corporate financial management. Basic
concepts such as interest rates, time value of money, cost of capital, and risk are
discussed and applied to stock, bond, and long-term investment valuation. Prerequisites:
ACC 212, ECO 215, ST 175.
FIN 343 Money Markets and Financial Institutions 4 cr
An examination of the major financial institutions operating in our
economy, and the environment in which they operate. In light of the changing environment
of the financial institutions area, the changing roles of the various financial markets
and the regulatory agencies are also studied in this course. Prerequisite: ECO 215, ST
175, ACC 212.
FIN 344 Business Finance II 4 cr
A continuation of FIN 341. Guidelines are developed for corporate,
financial decision-making in the areas of capital structure policy, dividend policy,
long-term financing, corporate control, and working capital management. The impact of
ethical considerations and global financial markets are emphasized. Prerequisite: FIN 341.
FIN 345 Principles of Insurance 4 cr
Risks facing the individual and business organizations, application
of public and private insurance to reduce or eliminate such risks. This is a survey course
involving all classes of insurance. Prerequisite: FIN 341.
FIN 346 Principles of Real Estate 4 cr
Principles and practices for the entire field of real estate,
including the role of private and governmental agencies; current trends and developments.
Prerequisite: FIN 341.
FIN 350 Financial Statement Analysis 4 cr
In-depth coverage of the principles and practices of effective
analysis of the financial statements of business firms for the purpose of understanding
(1) the economic and financial characteristics and current conditions of the business, (2)
particular strategies the firm may select with which to complete, and (3) the accounting
principles and procedures underlying the financial statements. The course integrates
concepts from accounting, economics, finance, and management. Prerequisite: FIN 344.
FIN 360 International Finance 4 cr
Analysis of the organization of American banking systems for
international operations; functions of foreign money and capital markets in international
banking and finance; the export-import banks and intergovernmental institutions; foreign
lending and investment criteria of private financial institutions; foreign exchange;
balance of payments; intergovernmental monetary agreements, organizations, and controls.
Prerequisite: FIN 344.
FIN 410 Intermediate Corporate Finance 4 cr
In-depth coverage of financial planning and management, including
capital budgeting, financial structure decisions, working capital management, valuation,
dividend policy and other topics. Prerequisites: FIN 344, 350 (FIN 350 may be taken in
same quarter).
FIN 441 Investments 4 cr
Survey of the characteristics of investment alternatives and the
investment environment, including market operations and regulations, sources and uses of
information, and an introduction to capital market theory. Prerequisite: FIN 344.
FIN 442 Security Analysis and Portfolio Management 4 cr
Analysis and selection of various instruments, security valuation,
and management of investments in the context of portfolio theory. Prerequisite: FIN 441.
FIN 443 Speculative Markets 4 cr
Covers principles of Options and Futures contracts and their
economic functions. Options: basic strategies; combinations and spreads; pricing; and the
various types of contracts. Futures: fundamentals of the market; contract specifications
and their uses. Program trading and portfolio insurance. Prerequisites: FIN 344.
FIN 444 Problems in Business Finance 4 cr
Actual and simulated cases in finance from business and industry;
includes business of all sizes. Prerequisites: FIN 343, 350, 410, 441.
FIN 445 Life and Disability Insurance 4 cr
Principles and practices of insurance used for family and income
protection against premature death and disability; retirement and pension plans including
group insurance and social security. Prerequisite: FIN 341.
FIN 450 Real Estate Appraisal 4 cr
Principles and practices of real estate appraisal to include:
residential analysis, site evaluation, neighborhood considerations, building estimates,
interest and cap rates, income approaches, URAR reports, farm and land, Uniform Standards,
commercial, direct and yield capitalizations. Prerequisite: FIN 346.
FIN 453 Depository Institutions Management I 4 cr
Principles, problems, practices, procedures, regulations, and
analysis involved in the capital management, asset management, liability management,
deposit structure, liquidity management, and other areas of the depository institution.
Prerequisite: FIN 343 or consent of the instructor.
FIN 463 Depository Institutions Management II 4 cr
Principles, problems, practices, procedures, regulations, and
analysis involved in the consumer and real estate lendings of the depository institution.
Also, loan documentation and loan compliance, cultural diversity, and ethical
considerations are discussed. Prerequisite: FIN 453 or consent of the instructor.
FIN 473 Depository Institutions Management III 4 cr
Principles, problems, practices, procedures, regulations, and
analysis involved in the commercial lending, agricultural lending, trust, safe deposit
operations, and receiving areas of the depository institution. Also, directors
responsibilities and liabilities are analyzed, and an asset/liability management computer
simulation is utilized. Prerequisites: FIN 350, FIN 453, and FIN 463.
FIN 490 Special Topics 4 cr
Designed to provide senior students an opportunity to study selected
topics of particular interest. Prerequisite: Permission of department chair and associate
dean. (A student may count no more than 4 hours of Special Topics in the Concentration.)
FIN 492 Seminar: Finance (W) 4 cr
Oral Reports on readings on various aspects of business finance.
Prerequisite: FIN 344.
FIN 494 Directed Study in Finance 4 cr
Primarily designed to give superior students an opportunity to study
selected topics of particular interest. Grades are awarded on a
satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing, a cumulative
GPA of 2.5 or better, and approval of the department chair and associate dean following
the evaluation of a written proposal.
FIN 496 Finance Internship 4 cr
The internship program is designed to give students practical
experience in their field of study. Students will complete directed projects under the
supervision of a faculty advisor. No more than four hours of internship may be counted
toward a degree in the College of Business and Management Studies. Grades are awarded on a
satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing, a cumulative
GPA of 2.5 or better, and approval of the department chair and associate dean following
the evaluation of a written proposal. Finance majors may not count this course as a
Finance elective.
FIN 501 Theory and Practice of Financial Management 4 cr
Theory and practice of assembling, investing, and managing capital.
Major topics include estimating a firm's cost of funds, basic and advanced capital
budgeting techniques, capital structure analysis, and dividend policy theory and practice.
Prerequisite: FIN 341 or equivalent.
FIN 521 Advanced Financial Theory 4 cr
Advanced theory of the firm's investment, financing, and dividend
decisions in keeping with the objective of maximizing shareholder wealth. Prerequisite:
FIN 501.
FIN 530 Investments 4 cr
Study of investment alternatives and their environment, including
market operations and regulation, sources and uses of information, and an introduction to
capital market theory. Prerequisite: FIN 501.
FIN 544 Problems in Business Finance 4 cr
Actual and simulated cases from business and industry requiring
rigorous financial analysis. Prerequisite: FIN 501.
FIN 548 Graduate Seminar in Finance 4 cr
Detailed examination of current developments and concepts in
finance, with extensive student participation. Prerequisite: FIN 520.
FIN 553 Depository Institutions Management I 4 cr
Principles, problems, practices, procedures, regulations, and
analysis involved in the capital management, asset management, liability management,
deposit structure, liquidity management, and other areas of the depository institution.
Prerequisite: FIN 501.
FIN 560 International Finance 4 cr

FIN 573 Depository Institutions Management III 4 cr
Principles, problems, practices, procedures, regulations, and

operations, and receiving areas of the depository institution. Also, directors
responsibilities and liabilities are analyzed, and an asset/liability management computer
simulation is utilized. Prerequisites: FIN 501, 553 and 563.
FIN 590 Special Topics 4 cr
Designed to provide graduate students an opportunity to study
selected topics. Prerequisites: Permission of the department chair and director of
graduate studies. A student may count no more than 4 hours of Special Topics in the M.B.A.
degree program.
FIN 594 Independent Study 4 cr
Reading and research on selected topics. Conferences and formal
research report required. Prerequisites: permission of department chair and director of
graduate studies.
