HS 170 First Aid 2 cr
Includes the scope, needs, and limitations of first aid with
laboratory training in the techniques and methods of injury care. Opportunity for American
Red Cross standard first-aid certification.
HS 262 Personal Health 4 cr
Current health problems as related to the individual with emphasis
upon sociological, psychological, and economic factors.
HS 263 Nutrition and Hunger 4 cr
Fundamental aspects of human nutrition, food constituents, diet,
planning, physiology of nutrition, weight control, socio-economic and cultural influences,
legislation, and political implications of food production as related to world population.
HS 351 Safety Education 4 cr
Traffic safety and safety at home, work, school, and play.
Organization of safety education programs in school and community. Methods and materials
for teaching safety.
HS 352 Traffic Safety Education 4 cr
A survey of the highway transportation system and traffic problems
designed to give the driver education teacher an opportunity to develop an understanding
of the scope and background of the various agencies and systems involved in the management
of vehicular traffic, to become familiar with the various types and kinds of
transportation systems at the state and local level.
HS 353 Driver Education I 4 cr
Inventory of skills; history, principles, and problems.
HS 354 Motorcycle Safety 4 cr
Fundamentals for teachers of driver education in the area of
motorcycle education; classroom instruction and laboratory experience; evaluation of
teaching ability and riding skills.
HS 360 School Community Health 4 cr
Stresses contemporary health problems both community and school,
school health program, community health agencies and organization, community health
education, evaluating health resources, and international health problems with
implications for community health. May include an internship with a public or voluntary
health agency.
HS 361* Curriculum in Health Education 4 cr
A survey of sample curricula in health education. Includes an
overview of the state recommended curriculum. Introduction to planning, adapting and
developing school health curricula. Teacher candidacy required for Elementary Education
majors ONLY.
HS 362 Drug Education 4 cr
A survey of substance abuse issues. Attention is given to specific
drug classifications, use and abuse patterns, prevention, treatment, and future
implications.
HS 363 Individualized Nutrition 4 cr
Basic nutritional principles are covered and the class includes
dietary assessment and computer analysis of individual and/or group diets. The course is
designed around individualized programmed instruction. The course does not meet the basic
nutrition course (HS 263) requirement in the general nursing program but is appropriate
for those RN's with previous experiences and/or course work in nutrition and a
recommendation by the College of Nursing. Requires special permission.
HS 365 School Health Program 4 cr
Attention is given to the total school health program (Services,
Environmental and Educational) with emphasis on the Health Services aspect. Included are:
legal requirements, communicable disease control and health appraisals. The role of the
teacher and school nurse is explored.
HS 451 Driver Education II 4 cr
Methods and techniques, teaching aids, teaching resources and
materials, and program and curriculum construction. Practical experience in teaching
students to drive.
HS 452 Simulation in Driver Education 4 cr
Simulation as an audio-visual instructional method and designed to
complement and supplement other instructional techniques used in the driver education
program to prepare individuals to function safely and effectively in today's traffic.
HS 453 Range-Laboratory Programs in Driver Education 4 cr
An examination of the aims, objectives, and role of laboratory
programs in driver education. Directed laboratory experiences will be provided.
HS 454 Elementary School Safety 4 cr
Teaching safety in elementary schools with emphasis on bicycle,
pedestrian, and school bus safety including methods and techniques of instruction.
HS 460* Methods in Health Education (W) 4 cr
Topic selection and teaching unit preparation. Presentation and
classroom practice of teaching methodologies. Practical mini-teaching experiences in local
school or other pertinent agencies. Admission to Teacher Candidacy or permission of
instructor.
HS 462 Public Health 4 cr
A study of public health organizations and available community
health resources, including the official and non-official health agencies at various
levels. An examination of causative community factors in disease, community diagnosis of
and programs to combat these conditions.
HS 463 Human Sexuality: 4 cr
Some Health Education Perspectives Explores
the philosophical and research bases in the area of sex education with the emphasis on
varied possibilities for curriculum development and instructional methodology.
HS 473 Problems in Health Education 4 cr
Special problems are assigned to individuals and to groups of
students.
HS 490 Special Topics 4 cr
A varying content course treating several aspects of Health
Education. May be repeated for credit when course content varies.
HS 494 Directed Study 2 or 4 cr
Directed research. Prerequisite: Permission of Department. No more
than two directed studies can be counted toward the bachelor's degree and Class B
certification.
HS 510 Current Health Problems 4 cr
Identification, exploration, and definition of current health
problems such as drug abuse, mental health, aging, death and dying, human sexuality,
chronic and communicable disease.
HS 520 Special Methods in Health Education 4 cr
Development, selection, and implementation of classroom teaching
strategies and classroom techniques in the Health Sciences area.
HS 533 Seminar in Traffic Education 4 cr
Professional growth through in-depth experience related to current
problems in the field of Traffic Education.
HS 535 Seminar in Health Education 4 cr
Professional growth through in-depth experience in presentation of
problems and formal papers, with emphasis on guided discussion and research criticism.
This is the culminating course in the Health Education option required for all graduate
students who do not write a thesis.
HS 544 Traffic Law 4 cr
Laws and enforcement involving motor vehicles. Laws of man and
natural laws. Responsibility when an accident occurs and insurance.
HS 554 Advanced Motorcycle Techniques 4 cr
A study of and participation in advanced motorcycle skills. The
identification, development and selection of programs, activities, and experiences for
motorcycle safety. The organization, administration, evaluation of motorcycle programs,
and activities.
HS 560 School Health Curriculum 4 cr
Designed to develop the prospective teacher's or the in service
teacher's competencies in curriculum planning and development applied to the health area.
HS 562 Addicting Substances 4 cr
A study of the drug spectrum, including alcohol, tobacco, and drug
use and abuse. Elements needed to develop educational programs to combat drug abuse and
use.
HS 563 Nutrition 4 cr
A study of food and health products as a basis for healthful living.
Health and nutritional needs at various ages as related to physical activity including
competitive sports.
HS 565 Community Health 4 cr
An introductory course in Community Health. Includes a survey of
contemporary health problems of both communities and schools. A review of the school and
community health programs.
HS 567 Aging and Health: Biologic and Social Perspectives 4 cr
An overview of the normal aging process, including physical,
psychological and social changes, myths, diseases, related community resources, and the
team approach to meeting needs.
HS 575 Traffic Administration 4 cr
Fundamental principles, concepts, and issues relevant to
establishing, organizing, and administering the traffic-education program.
HS 593 Directed Study and Research in Traffic Education 4 cr
Students explore through directed individual study, research
problems, and issues of special interest in Traffic Education. Not more than four quarter
hours of any departmental 593 courses can be accepted toward a degree program.
HS 594 Directed Study and Research in Health Education 4 cr
Students explore through directed study and research problems and
issues of special interest or significance in Health Education. Not more than 4 quarter
hours of any departmental 594 courses can be accepted toward a degree program.
HS 599 Thesis 1-12 cr
A student selects a project, study, or investigation in Health and
Physical Education. Such project forms the basis for the thesis. A Thesis Committee will
give guidance during the investigation and writing of the thesis.
