HSC 100 Orientation to Nursing 1 cr
Facilitates the development of skills which promote academic success
and provide nursing students opportunities to clarify career goals. Emphasis will be
placed on personal responsibility, accountability, and professionalism in health related
careers.
HSC 105 Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation 1 cr
Provides students the opportunity to develop knowledge and skill of
prevention and resuscitation of cardiopulmonary arrest victims and management of foreign
body airway obstruction. Content includes internal and external environment factors
affecting the prevention and resuscitation of cardiopulmonary arrest in infants, children,
and adults and safe effective removal of a foreign body airway obstruction. Emphasis is on
prevention, health promotion, and maintenance, medico-legal issues are addressed.
HSC 232 Diet Therapy I 2 cr
Metabolism of the macro and micronutrients, nutritional services and
concerns of the community, and their application to the nursing profession.
HSC 233 Diet Therapy II 2 cr
Nursing application of the therapeutic use of nutrients and diets in
the hospital setting and in the community. Prerequisites: HSC 232 and BMD 341.
Corequisites: AHN 230 and AHN 231.
HSC 242 Basic Pharmacology 1 cr
Course for those responsible for the safe preparation and
administration of medications. The mathematical and metric-apothecary concepts are
introduced. Methods of calculating dosages are stressed.
HSC 243 Clinical Pharmacology 5 cr
Clinical application of drug therapy and the concepts relating to
the mechanisms of drug actions, interactions, and adverse reactions, including the
immunologic-idiosyncratic-allergic drug responses. Emphasis is on pharmacokinetics,
dosage, methods of administration, and adverse effects of drugs according to major
classifications. Current research in pharmacology is also incorporated in course content.
HSC 301 Wellness Promotion and Self-Care 4 cr
Designed to increase awareness and knowledge of ways to prevent
disease and maintain optimal health. A variety of topics relating to wellness will be
addressed through analysis of risk factors and through a close study of the relationship
of life style and illness. Elective.
HSC 324 Death and Dying (W) 3 cr
Provides the student an opportunity to analyze theories, concepts,
socioethical issues, and research related to dying and death. Focus is on assisting
students to explore their feelings regarding death as well as developing self-awareness of
the feelings of patients and families. Emphasis is on the acceptance of the process of
mourning and death and applicable nursing interventions. Elective.
HSC 353 Human Sexuality and Nursing (W) 3 cr
Increase awareness of the influence of attitudes and values related
to sexuality and the effect on the nurse's ability to provide care for individuals with
sexual concerns. Content includes explorations of internal and external factors affecting
human sexuality and nursing interventions. Elective.
HSC 450 Ethical Considerations in the Care of the Aging 4 cr
Interdisciplinary course on a critical investigation of ethical
issues affecting the elderly and on application of principles, concepts, theories, and
decision models as a framework for ethical decision-making.
HSC 457 Gerontological Concepts 4 cr
Focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to meeting the diverse needs
of the aging population. Physiological, psychological, and sociocultural aspects of aging
are explored. Emphasis is on attitudes toward the elderly, health programs for older
Americans, health policy, ethical/legal issues, and the needs of family caregivers.

HSC 470 Transcultural Health Care 2-4 cr
Emphasis is placed on appreciation of the attitudes, customs, and
values of people in a variety of cultures and on utilization of this knowledge in planning
health care for people in multiple settings.
HSC 524 Death and Dying 1-3 cr
Provides the student an opportunity to analyze theories, concepts,
socioethical issues, and research related to dying and death. Focus is on assisting
students to explore their feelings regarding death as well as developing self-awareness of
the feelings of patients and families. Emphasis is on the acceptance of the process of
mourning and death and applicable nursing interventions. Content includes the role of
leaders as a facilitator of professional groups during bereavement experiences.
HSC 550 Ethical Consideration in the Care of the Aging 4 cr
Interdisciplinary course on critical investigation of ethical issues
affecting the elderly and on application of principles, concepts, theories, and decision
models as a framework for ethical decision making.
HSC 555 Clinical Embryology 4 cr
Provides an in-depth study of the embryology of human development
and basic genetics. Emphasis will be on the timing of development of each system and the
complications resulting from malformation.
HSC 557 Gerontological Concepts 4 cr
Focuses on a multi-disciplinary approach to meeting the diverse
needs of the aging population. Physiological, psychological, and social-cultural aspects
of aging are explored. Emphasis is on attitudes towards the elderly, health programs for
older Americans, health policy, ethical/legal issues, and the needs of family caregivers.
HSC 568 Applied Economics in Health Care Policy 4 cr
Provides a foundation for participation in health policy and for
understanding the economic impact of health planning. Students will analyze health care
policy from a socio-economic, ideological, political, historical, and technological
perspective while integrating clinical management processes and utilization of community
resources. Content will focus on fiscal management, health policy and economic
implications for the nursing profession, and the role of the provider in policy making.
HSC 569 Risk Management in Health Care Organizations 2 cr
Provides an overview of risk management issues encountered in health
care. Emphasis is on management of these issues by nursing administration.
HSC 570 Transcultural Health Care 2 - 4 cr
Emphasis is on appreciation of the attitudes, customs, and values of
people in a variety of cultures and on utilization of this knowledge in planning health
care for people in multiple settings.
HSC 571 Managing Health Care Personnel 4 cr
Analysis of the nurse executive's role in dealing with people,
policies, and organizational development. Examination and application of current legal and
governmental directives regulating human resource management, employee relations,
recruitment and retention, and motivational issues in health care management. Emphasis is
placed on assisting the nurse executive in assuming a visionary leadership role within the
changing health care environment.
HSC 572 Geropsychiatric Mental Health 4 cr
Provides a theoretical basis for mental health care for the elderly.
Emphasis is on the application of theories with elderly individuals and their families who
are at risk for mental disorders in various psychiatric settings. Current medical and
psychosocial interventions are examined.
HSC 590 Special Topics 1-6 cr
Study of topics significant to the health professions. Content
varies and may be repeated.
