HY 101 History of Civilization I 4 cr
History of mankind, emphasizing the rise of the West.

HY 102 History of Civilization II 4 cr
History of the modern West.
NOTE: History 101 and 102 are related courses but do not need to be taken in order.

HY 103 History of Asian Civilization I 4 cr
A survey of traditional cultures and values as well as principal ideas and institutions of East Asia (China, Japan and Korea), South Asia (India and Pakistan) and Southeast Asia, up to 1800.

HY 104 History of Asian Civilization II 4 cr
The responses of East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia, to the impact of Western challenges; their roles in the modern world; economic and political structure; the emergence of China and Japan as major world political and economic powers.

HY 205 Warfare and Society in the Modern World (W) 4 cr

HY 251 History of England to 1603 4 cr
The political and social history of England from the Roman occupation to the Age of the Tudors. Examines the growth of the nation in the Anglo-Saxon period, the effect of the Norman conquest, the development of royal power, centralized governmental institutions and the common law system, the intensification of national consciousness, and the Reformation.

A survey of sub-Saharan African history since the age of exploration. The course will emphasize the diversity of African cultures before the arrival of Europeans, the colonial experience, independence, and modern Africa.

The role of African-Americans in United States history, emphasizing African origins, cultural contributions, and social programs.

Historical criticism, analysis, and synthesis through reading, critical discussion, and presentation of a seminar paper. This course is strongly recommended for all students contemplating graduate work. May not be taken for credit by graduate students.

HY 494 Directed Studies 1-4 cr
Directed individual study. Prerequisite: Approval of the department chair.

HY 496 Professional Studies: Directed Field Research 1-4 cr
Independent study in the field and library under the supervision of a member of the history faculty. May not be taken for credit more than twice. Prerequisite: Permission of department chair.

HY 580 Studies in American History 4 cr
This is a variable content course which deals with a topic in American history and its historiography. It will introduce students to research skills specific to that field and result in the tentative definition of a research project. First part of a two-course sequence for M.A. candidates in history.

HY 581 Research in American History 4 cr
This is a variable content course which is the second part of a required sequence for all M.A. candidates in history. Students will write a research paper involving interpretation of primary sources. Prerequisite: At least a grade of B in HY 580 with the same instructor.

HY 585 Studies in European History 4 cr
This is a variable content course which deals with a topic in European history and its historiography. It will introduce students to research skills specific to that field and result in the tentative definition of a research project. First part of a two-course sequence for M.A. candidates in history.

HY 586 Research in European History 4 cr
This is a variable content course which is the second part of a required sequence for all M.A. candidates in history. Students will write a research paper involving interpretation of primary sources. Prerequisite: At least a grade of B in HY 585 with the same instructor.
HY 590 Special Topics 4 cr
A colloquium on selected subjects and readings to be arranged by the department. Limited to fifteen students. May be repeated once for credit when content varies.

HY 592 Seminar in Teaching History 4 cr
A study of the use of historical methodology and materials, individual problems, group criticism, and some experience in presenting history. May be repeated once with written approval of the department chair and eight hours in history in the same field taken for graduate credit including a 500-level course in the field. Four of the eight hours of prerequisites may be taken concurrently with the seminar.

HY 594 Directed Studies 1-4 cr
Directed individual study. Prerequisite: Special permission of department chair.

HY 595 Archival Practice 4 cr
Introduces graduate students to archival theory and practice.

HY 596 Professional Studies: Research Methods in History 4 cr
The preparation and writing of a major research paper; methods of research, appraisal of primary sources, literary presentation, critical bibliography, and achievement of a significant interpretation of sources. Prerequisite: Special permission of department chair.

HY 597 Professional Studies: Directed Field Research 4 cr
Under direction of faculty, relates the student's classroom situation to occupational and professional experiences in a defined field of interest, e.g. archival, museum, or public history project. Written reports required. Pre-requisite: Special permission of departmental chair.

HY 599 Thesis 1-8 cr
Eight hours required of student in the thesis track. May not be taken for credit toward a degree by students in the non-thesis track. Prerequisite: HY 581 or HY 586 and eight hours of graduate level history, including one 500-level course, in the field relevant to the thesis. Special permission of department chair.
