LG 021 French Proficiency Test 0 cr
Elementary level proficiency test administered to Arts and Sciences students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in French.

LG 022 German Proficiency Test 0 cr
Elementary level proficiency test administered to Arts and Sciences students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in German.

LG 023 Spanish Proficiency Test 0 cr
Elementary level proficiency test administered to Arts and Sciences students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in Spanish.

LG 024 Foreign Language Proficiency Test 0 cr
Elementary level proficiency test administered to Arts and Sciences students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language other than French, German, or Spanish.

LANGUAGES (LG)

LG 190 Special Topics 4 cr
Topics to be determined by student need and interest. Course may be repeated when content varies.

LG 205 World Literature (W) 4 cr
A varying-content course designed to introduce the student to selected major works of one language other than English. Works from English-speaking countries may occasionally be used for the purpose of cross-cultural comparison. The student may choose from a number of specific topics that will be designated prior to each quarter. All readings and discussions are in English. May be repeated for credit when course content varies. Foreign Language majors wishing to have one or several of these courses count toward their major must seek prior approval from their advisor. Prerequisite: EH 102.

LG 210 Graduate Reading Knowledge 4 cr
A specialized, one-quarter variable content course designed to help graduate students satisfy their foreign language requirement. Emphasis is on developing the reading comprehension skills necessary for competent reading of research articles in foreign language publications. Grading is S/U. Prerequisite: Graduate standing.

LG 290 Special Topics 2-4 cr
Topics to be determined by student need and interest. Course may be repeated when content varies.

LG 413 Modern Literary Theory and Criticism 4 cr
A survey of major schools of thought in literary theory in the Twentieth Century. Primary emphasis on modern European criticism and texts.

LG 490 Special Topics 4 cr
Topics to be determined by student need and interest. Course may be repeated when content varies. (A sub-title identifying the topic will be entered on the student's record.)

LG 492 Seminar 2-4 cr
A course designed for advanced students to pursue a special topic in depth through readings, critical discussions, and delivery of a seminar paper. This course may be repeated for a maximum of eight credits. Prerequisite: Normally limited to juniors and seniors.

LG 494 Directed Studies 2-4 cr
Directed study in the library under the supervision of a member of the Foreign Language faculty. This course may be repeated for a maximum of eight credits. Prerequisite: Permission of the department chair.

FRENCH

LG 111 Elementary French I 4 cr
Intensive introduction to present-day French, with drills for mastery of phonology, basic structural patterns, and functional vocabulary. Practice in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing.

LG 112 Elementary French II 4 cr
A continuation of French I. Prerequisite: LG 111 or equivalent.

LG 113 Elementary French III 4 cr
A continuation of French II. Prerequisite: LG 112 or equivalent.

LG 211 Intermediate French I 4 cr
The first of a three-quarter integrated sequence in intermediate French. A continuation of the training necessary to achieve fluency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing French. A comprehensive grammar review. Readings of literary and cultural texts treating French-speaking areas of the world. Emphasis on fluency in conversation through class discussion and oral presentations. Prerequisite: LG 113 or equivalent.

LG 212 Intermediate French II 4 cr
The second quarter of the intermediate course. Prerequisite: LG 211 or equivalent.

LG 213 Intermediate French III 4 cr
The third quarter of the intermediate sequence. Prerequisite: LG 212 or equivalent.

LG 314 Advanced French Grammar 4 cr
Intensive review of French grammar to increase proficiency in the four skills, with special emphasis on structure, syntax, idiomatic French, and problems in translation. Prerequisite: LG 213 or equivalent.

LG 315 Advanced French Conversation I 4 cr
Intensive conversation coupled with a practical study of corrective and descriptive French phonetics. The course relies heavily on radio and television programming to illustrate current speech patterns and to provide subjects for discussions and oral reports. Prerequisite: LG 213 or equivalent.

LG 316 Advanced French Conversation II 4 cr
Intensive conversation addressing various levels of the spoken language from slang to formal speech. The course relies on the use of French cinematic productions as a basis for discussions and oral reports. Prerequisite: LG 213 or equivalent.

LG 317 Advanced French Composition (W) 4 cr
Intensive course in writing French. Emphasis on writing proficiency and various styles of writing. Attention paid to development of skills and vocabulary in various kinds of written French, including personal writing, correspondence, essays, and reports. Prerequisite: LG 314 or equivalent.

LG 318 Commercial and Technical French (W) 4 cr
Advanced course in written and spoken business and technical French. Emphasis on writing proficiency in various aspects of business, government, technical, and general commercial writing. Development of related speaking skills for commerce. Prerequisite: LG 314 or equivalent.

LG 322 French Literature and Civilization of the 4 cr
Middle Ages & Renaissance Origins and development of French literature and culture up to the 17th century. Extensive readings, class discussions, and oral and written reports in the language are required. Prerequisite: LG 213 or equivalent.

LG 323 French Literature and Civilization of the 4 cr
17th & 18th Centuries Development of French literature and culture in these two centuries, with special attention to Classicism and the Enlightenment. Extensive readings, class discussions, and oral and written reports in the language are required. Prerequisite: LG 213 or equivalent.

LG 324 19th-Century French Literature & Civilization 4 cr
Development of French literature and culture in the nineteenth century. Extensive readings of novels and poetry, class discussions, and oral and written reports in the language are required. Prerequisite: LG 213 or equivalent.

LG 325 20th-Century French Literature & Civilization 4 cr
Development of French literature and culture in the twentieth century with emphasis on existentialism, modernism, and post-modernism. Extensive readings of novels and theatre, class discussions, and oral and written reports in the language are required. Prerequisite: LG 213 or equivalent.

GERMAN

LG 151 Elementary German I 4 cr
The first of a three-quarter sequence in elementary German. The goal of the three-quarter course is to achieve a basic proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing German.

LG 152 Elementary German II 4 cr
The second quarter of the elementary course. Prerequisite: LG 151 or equivalent.

LG 153 Elementary German III 4 cr
The third quarter of the elementary course. Prerequisite: LG 152 or equivalent.

LG 251 Intermediate German I 4 cr
The first of a three-quarter sequence in intermediate German. A continuation of the training necessary to achieve fluency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing German. Reading of literary, cultural, and historical texts. Class discussions, reports in German, both oral and written, are required. Prerequisite: LG 153 or equivalent.

LG 252 Intermediate German II 4 cr
The second quarter of the intermediate sequence. Prerequisite: LG 251 or equivalent.

LG 253 Intermediate German III 4 cr

LG 361 German Civilization 5 cr
German culture as reflected in the fine arts and literature. Intensive study of German civilization and its contributions to world culture; emphasis upon geographical, historical, social, political, spiritual, and artistic forces. Prerequisite: LG 253 or equivalent.

LG 362 German Literature from the 4 cr
Middle Ages Through 1750 Origin and development of German literature through the 18th century. Extensive readings, class discussions and oral and written reports in the language are required. Prerequisite: LG 253 or equivalent.

LG 363 German Literature from Classicism 4 cr
through Naturalism Concentration on major works of Goethe, the Romantics, and the Realists, with extensive readings, class discussions, and oral and written reports in the language. Prerequisite: LG 253 or equivalent.

LG 364 Modern and Contemporary German Literature 4 cr
Concentration on major works written since the late nineteenth century with extensive readings, class discussions, and oral and written reports in the language. Prerequisite: LG 253 or equivalent.

LG 366 Advanced German Grammar and 5 cr
Composition (W) Designed for the student who wishes to teach or to do advanced work. Emphasis is on formal grammar and composition. Prerequisite: LG 253 or equivalent.

LG 367 Advanced German Conversation 4 cr
Intensive conversation with practice in using various levels of the spoken language from slang to formal speech. Emphasis on the sounds and idioms of German. Prerequisite: LG 253 or equivalent.

RUSSIAN

LG 171 Elementary Russian I 4 cr
The first of a three-quarter sequence in elementary Russian. The goal of the three-quarter course is to achieve a basic proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Russian.

LG 172 Elementary Russian II 4 cr
The second quarter of the elementary course. Prerequisite: LG 171 or equivalent.

LG 173 Elementary Russian III 4 cr
The third quarter of the elementary course. Prerequisite: LG 172 or equivalent.

LG 270 Intermediate Russian I 4 cr
The first of a three-quarter sequence in intermediate Russian. The course includes the study of grammar and vocabulary, historical and cultural materials, and selected works of modern Russian literature. Prerequisite: LG 173 or equivalent.

LG 271 Intermediate Russian II 4 cr
The second quarter of intermediate Russian. Prerequisite: LG 270 or equivalent.

LG 272 Intermediate Russian III 4 cr
The third quarter of intermediate Russian. Prerequisite: LG 271 or equivalent.

LG 374 Advanced Russian Grammar and 4 cr
Composition (W) Designed to give students active control of the more complex grammatical features and idiomatic vocabulary of modern Russian. Prerequisite: LG 272 or equivalent.

LG 375 Advanced Russian Conversation 4 cr
Training in speaking and composition. Emphasis on fluency in rapid conversation related to daily life. Readings in literary selections and current events from the press are required as a basis for conversation. Prerequisite: LG 272 or equivalent.

LG 376 Chekhov: Prose and Drama 4 cr
Readings, lectures, and discussions in Russian. Designed to enhance the student's overall command of Russian as well as acquaint the student with the literary background and style of one of the great personalities of Russia's Golden Age. Prerequisite: LG 374 or LG 375.

LG 380 Russian Drama and Poetry 4 cr
Readings, lectures, and discussions in Russian. Important plays and poems chosen from 19th-and early 20th-century Russian literature. Major authors include: Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov, Tiuchev, Ostrovsky, Gor'ky, and others. Prerequisite: LG 374 or LG 375.

LG 383 Russian Short Story 4 cr
Readings, lectures, and discussions in Russian. Stories chosen from 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries are analyzed thematically and stylistically in the light of major literary developments. Major authors will include: Karamzin, Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol, Tolstoy, Turgenev, and others. Prerequisite: LG 374 or LG 375.

LG 385 Contemporary Soviet Literature 4 cr
Readings, lectures, and discussions in Russian. Prose and poetry of the post-World War II period. Discussion of such important phenomena as: socialist realism, village prose, urban prose, non-Russian Soviet literature, and other topics. Prerequisite: LG 374 or LG 375.

SPANISH

LG 131 Elementary Spanish I 4 cr
The first of a three-quarter sequence in elementary Spanish. The goal of the three-quarter course is to achieve a basic proficiency in communication in Spanish through the development of understanding, speaking, reading, and writing.

LG 132 Elementary Spanish II 4 cr
A continuation of Spanish 131. Prerequisite: LG 131 or equivalent.

LG 133 Elementary Spanish III 4 cr
A continuation of Spanish 132. Prerequisite: LG 132 or equivalent.

LG 231 Intermediate Spanish I 4 cr
The first of a three-quarter sequence in intermediate Spanish. A continuation of the training necessary to achieve fluency in Spanish. Grammar review, class discussions, reports in Spanish, both oral and written, are required. Readings of literary, cultural, and historical texts are included. Prerequisite: LG 133 or equivalent.

LG 333 Advanced Spanish Conversation I 4 cr
Extensive oral work in a variety of activities to review and reinforce acquired language skills, emphasizing vocabulary acquisition and fluency in the language. Prerequisite: LG 233 or equivalent.

LG 334 Advanced Spanish Conversation II 4 cr
Extensive oral work concentrating on improving the different linguistic registers in conversation. Emphasis is placed on the use of idioms and specialized vocabulary. Prerequisite: LG 233 or equivalent.

LG 335 Advanced Spanish Grammar and 4 cr
Composition I (W) Extensive study of major aspects of Spanish grammar with emphasis on increasing proficiency in the four skills. Special emphasis is placed on descriptive and narrative writing. Prerequisite: LG 233 or equivalent.

LG 336 Advanced Spanish Grammar and 4 cr
Composition II (W) Extensive study of the finer points of Spanish grammar with emphasis on style and discursive writing. Prerequisite: LG 233 or equivalent.

LG 337 Commercial and Technical Spanish 4 cr
Advanced course in written and spoken business and technical Spanish. Emphasis on writing proficiency in various aspects of business, government, technical, and general commercial writing. Development of related speaking skills for commerce. Prerequisite: LG 335 or LG 336 or equivalent.

LG 340 Latin American Civilization 4 cr
Latin American culture as reflected in the literature, fine arts, and music of Hispanic America and Luzo-Brazilian America. Intensive study of Latin American civilization and its contributions to world culture; emphasis upon historical, social, political, spiritual, and artistic forces. Prerequisite: LG 233 or equivalent.

Spanish culture as reflected in the fine arts and literature. Intensive study of Spanish civilization and its contributions to world culture; emphasis upon geographical, historical, social, political, spiritual, and artistic forces. Prerequisite: LG 233 or equivalent.

LG 342 Spanish Literature through the Golden Age 4 cr

LG 344 Spanish Literature since 1830 4 cr
Spanish literature since 1830 with emphasis on Romanticism, the Generation of 1898, contemporary poetry and the novel. Extensive readings, class discussions and oral written reports. Prerequisite: LG 233 or equivalent.

LG 345 Latin American Literature to Modernism 4 cr
A survey of major works, figures, and movements in Latin American literature from its inception to the Modernist period. Prerequisite: LG 233 or equivalent.
