ARABIC

LGS 106 Elementary Arabic I 4 cr
The first of a three quarter sequence in Elementary Arabic. Its purpose is to introduce students to Arabic as it is spoken today. Emphasis on developing speaking and listening skills through intensive drills, exposure to basic structural patterns, and functional vocabulary. Study requires extensive use of audio-tapes. LGS 106 is a NASILP course; enrollment by special permission only.

LGS 107 Elementary Arabic II 4 cr
A continuation of Elementary Arabic I. Prerequisite: LGS 106 or equivalent.

LGS 108 Elementary Arabic III 4 cr
A continuation of Elementary Arabic II. Prerequisite: LGS 107 or equivalent.

LGS 206 Intermediate Arabic I 4 cr
The first of a three-quarter sequence in Intermediate Arabic. This is a continuation of Elementary Arabic III. It continues to develop speaking and listening skills as well as reading and writing skills through intensive drills, exposure to basic structural patterns, and functional vocabulary. Study requires extensive use of audio-tapes. Prerequisite: LGS 108 or equivalent.

LGS 121 Elementary Chinese I 4 cr
The first of a three quarter sequence in Elementary Mandarin Chinese. The goal of the three quarter course is to introduce students to Mandarin as it is spoken today. Emphasis is on developing speaking and listening skills through intensive drills, exposure to basic structural patterns and functional vocabulary. LGS 121 is a NASILP course; enrollment by special permission only.

LGS 122 Elementary Chinese II 4 cr
A continuation of Elementary Mandarin Chinese I. Prerequisite: LGS 121 or equivalent.

LGS 123 Elementary Chinese III 4 cr
A continuation of Elementary Mandarin Chinese II. Prerequisite: LGS 122 or equivalent.
LGS 221 Intermediate Chinese I 4 cr
The first of a three quarter sequence. A continuation of Elementary Chinese. It continues to develop speaking and listening skills, as well as reading and writing skills, through intensive drills, exposure to basic structural patterns, and functional vocabulary. Prerequisite: LGS 123.

LGS 141 Elementary Greek I 4 cr
The first of a three quarter sequence in Elementary Modern Greek. The goal of the course is to introduce students to Greek as it is spoken today. Emphasis on developing speaking and listening skills through intensive drills, exposure to basic structural patterns, and functional vocabulary. LGS 141 is a NASILP course; enrollment by special permission only.

LGS 142 Elementary Greek II 4 cr
A continuation of Elementary Greek I. Prerequisite: LGS 141.

LGS 143 Elementary Greek III 4 cr
A continuation of Elementary Greek II. Prerequisite: LGS 142 or equivalent.

LGS 241 Intermediate Greek I 4 cr
The first of a three quarter sequence in Intermediate Modern Greek. A continuation of Elementary Greek III. It continues to develop speaking and listening skills, as well as reading and writing skills, through intensive drills, exposure to basic structural patterns, and functional vocabulary. Prerequisite: LGS 143.

LGS 242 Intermediate Greek II 4 cr
A continuation of Intermediate Greek I. Prerequisite: LGS 241 or equivalent.

LGS 101 Elementary Japanese I 4 cr
The first of a three quarter sequence in Elementary Japanese. The goal of the course is to introduce students to Japanese as it is spoken today. LGS 201 Intermediate Japanese I 4 cr
The first of a three quarter sequence. A continuation of the training necessary to build fluency in understanding and speaking Japanese. Prerequisite: LGS 103 or equivalent. LGS 201 is a NASILP course; enrollment by special permission only.

LGS 202 Intermediate Japanese II 4 cr
A continuation of LGS 201. Prerequisite: LGS 201 or equivalent.

LGS 203 Intermediate Japanese III 4 cr
A continuation of LGS 202. Prerequisite: LGS 202 or equivalent.


LGS 590 Special Topics 4 cr
Topics to be determined by student need and interest. Content will vary. A subtitle identifying the topic will be entered on the student's record.

LGS 592 Seminar 4 cr
A course designed for graduate students to pursue a special topic in depth through readings, critical discussions, and delivery of a seminar paper.

LGS 594 Directed Studies 2-4 cr
Directed study under the supervision of a member of the Foreign Languages and Literatures faculty having Graduate Faculty status. This course may be repeated for a maximum of eight credits. Prerequisite: permission of department chair.
