LS 191 Orientation to Leisure Studies 4 cr
An introduction to the Leisure Services profession; its history,
philosophies, and the psychology of leisure in the changing society. Includes an
orientation to community leisure agencies.
LS 194 Leisure Crafts 4 cr
Adapting various crafts media for use in recreational programs.
Design and execution of creative crafts with emphasis on use of indigenous materials.
LS 195 Leisure Services for Special Populations 4 cr
Study of the provision of recreation services for special groups.
Organization, programs, and research activities of major agencies involved in the
provision of recreation services. Emphasis on handicapped individuals, the aging,
economically and culturally deprived, youth, corrections, and rural disadvantaged
populations.
LS 280 Hospitality Services 4 cr
A study of hotel/motel/resort services. Includes an overview of
recreation services, food and beverage, guest services, marketing, housekeeping,
maintenance, and fiscal concerns.
LS 292 Outdoor Recreation/Adventure 4 cr
An introduction to outdoor recreation activities with an emphasis on
adventure pursuits; e.g., backpacking, canoeing, mountaineering, rock climbing and
wilderness ethics.
LS 294 Recreational Resources 4 cr
An analysis and overview of the resources, natural and artificial,
used in providing leisure experiences to a variety of publics. Particular emphasis is
placed on outdoor areas.
LS 295 Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation 4 cr
Introduces students to the field of Therapeutic Recreation,
including the history, foundations, and philosophy of the field. In addition,
characteristics and leisure needs of numerous special populations will be introduced.
LS 297 Campus Recreation 4 cr
Planning, organization, and leadership of intramural and community
sports activities.
LS 298 Field Work in Leisure Services 4 cr
Opportunity to plan, organize, conduct, and evaluate personal
leadership experiences in leisure service agencies.
LS 302 Foundations of Programming 4 cr
Programming principles, responsibilities, and methodology
techniques. Programming as its relates to the activity setting and the formal program
organizational process.
LS 375 Administration of Leisure Services (W) 4 cr
Management and organization of leisure services agencies, managing
authorities, legal basis, fiscal aspects, personnel and staffing procedures, and community
relations.
LS 379 Leisure and Aging 4 cr
A study of the aging process and the special recreational needs,
problems, opportunities, and activities for the elderly.
LS 391 Leadership in Leisure Services (W) 4 cr
The theories, principles, and philosophies of leadership as applied
to the delivery of Leisure Services to various groups within the communities in our
society.
LS 393 Methods of Instructing Leisure Crafts 4 cr
Instructional methods for crafts leaders in recreation and leisure
settings.
LS 395 Therapeutic Recreation Process 4 cr
This course includes the following aspects of Therapeutic Recreation
in treatment settings: Client assessment, treatment planning, documentation, provision of
treatment interventions and evaluation. In addition, clinical supervision and the role of
the helper in rehabilitation will be presented.
LS 396 Recreational Resource Planning and Design 4 cr
Elementary principles of planning and design as applied to leisure
services areas and facilities.
LS 464* Therapeutic Recreation for the Hospitalized Child 4 cr
Study of the theory and practice of therapeutic recreation
application in the acute care pediatric hospital setting. Principles of planning,
programming, assessment, and activity implementation with children suffering from a
variety of acute and chronic illnesses.
LS 465* Therapeutic Recreation for 4 cr
Developmental Disabilities Designed to
give the student an understanding of the motor and sensory disturbances unique to retarded
children along with activities modified to meet the unique needs of retardates.
LS 467* Therapeutic Recreation for Physical Disabilities 4 cr
Designed to enable Therapeutic Recreation specialists to develop an
understanding for individuals with physical and multiple disabilities so they can
successfully devise activities that meet their special needs and limitations.
LS 469* Therapeutic Recreation for Psychological 4 cr
Impairments Designed to enable
Therapeutic Recreation Specialists to develop competencies in planning, organizing, and
conducting movement and leisure experiences for the emotionally disturbed, and learning
disabled.
LS 480* Private and Commercial Leisure Services 4 cr
A survey of private and commercial leisure services. Included is an
analysis of employee (industrial) recreation and its role in the profession.
LS 481* Tourism and Resort Development 4 cr
Tourism and recreational travel; nature of resort development and
its effect on generating tourist flow to and within regions. Economic importance of both
tourism and resort development.
LS 483* Issues in Leisure Services 4 cr
A study of the major trends, problems and issues in tourism,
hospitality, and commercial recreation.
LS 490 Special Topics 1 to 4 cr
Selected topics in leisure services. Topics will vary according to
needs and interests of students. Course may be repeated for credit when content varies.
Prerequisite: Special Permission.
LS 491* Fiscal Administration and Grantsmanship (W) 4 cr
An in-depth study of budgeting procedures, public financing,
funding, pricing, and other fiscal components of the administrative process. A special
emphasis will be placed on non-profit entities and grantsmanship.
LS 492* Outdoor Education and Interpretation 4 cr
Theories, philosophies, and principles of outdoor education with
emphasis on the development of interpretive programs.
LS 496* Recreational Resource Management 4 cr
An analysis of the management processes used in the operation and
supervision of recreational resources, e.g., maintenance procedures, management policies,
personnel requirements, construction, etc.
LS 498* Internship in Leisure Services 16 cr
Supervised experiences in a leisure services agency to provide an
on-the-job apprenticeship. The student will be exposed to all operational aspects of the
agency.
LS 569 Leisure in Modern Society 4 cr
An explanation of the economic, religious, political, and
socio-cultural factors which influence behavior in modern society along with an in-depth
look at the major trends in the leisure movement.
LS 570 Procedures in Therapeutic Recreation I 4 cr
A systematic exploration of process skills needed to perform in the
role of a graduate-level Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. Course content focuses on
systematic approaches to program planning and evaluation, activity analysis and
grant-proposal development. An overview of Therapeutic Recreation is given.
LS 571 Procedures in Therapeutic Recreation II 4 cr
A systematic exploration of process skills needed to perform in the
role of a graduate-level Therapeutic Recreational Specialist. Course content focuses on
administration techniques in Activity Therapy. Facilitation techniques in leadership and
supervision, consultation and para-professional training.
LS 573 Issues and Trends in Leisure Services 4 cr
An in-depth examination of current issues and trends in Leisure
Services with respect to their impact on the leisure service profession and society.
LS 576 Recreation and Special Populations 4 cr
An overview of current recreational services and programs related to
selected special populations; classroom instruction is supplemented by practical
experience in various rehabilitation agencies.
LS 580 Professional Affiliation 4, 8, 12 cr
An individually designed practicum experience which varies from four
to twelve credit hours depending upon the student's prior experiences and anticipated
career objectives.
LS 585 Management of Public Leisure Services 4 cr
An in-depth examination into the research, foundations, and
functions in the delivery of public leisure services, including current practices in
management of fiscal procedures, budgeting and grantmanship in the leisure services
profession.
LS 587 Theories of Recreational Resource Planning 4 cr
and Management A comprehensive study of
the planning, design, and management of recreational resources, areas, and facilities.
LS 590 Special Topics 4 cr
A varying-content course treating various aspects of Leisure
Services. May be repeated once for credit when course content varies.
LS 591 Travel and Tourism 4 cr
A survey course designed to provide students with an overview of
travel and tourism as an area of study. Discussions will center on tourism at the macro
(regional and national) level. Tourist behavior, the social, environmental, and economic
impact of tourism will be highlighted.
LS 592 Outdoor Recreation/Adventure Programming 4 cr
Study and practicum in popular adventure activities (e.g., shooting
sports, angling, backpacking, orienteering, rock climbing, canoeing). Emphasis on
attitudes, skills, environmental awareness, teaching methodology, and principles of group
leadership as they relate to adventuresome activities.
LS 596 Special Projects 4 cr
An individually planned experience whereby a student conceptualizes
and researches a special problem relevant to the leisure services profession. Students
will share their experiences in a weekly seminar (non-thesis option).
