MGT 240 Management for Non-Business Majors 4 cr
An overview of the management process and organizational behavior in
all types of organizations. Includes the planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and
controlling functions of management, as well as behavioral setting. Case study supplements
emphasize the health care, educational and non-profit organizational settings. (Business
majors will not receive credit.)
MGT 320 Organizational Behavior 4 cr
Analysis of human behavior in the work place and within society.
Topics include motivation and learning theory, interpersonal relationships, group
dynamics, and the psychology of communication. Prerequisite: declared major.
MGT 322 Management Theory and Practice 4 cr
Theories of organizational structures, practices, and behavior, and
the effective management of organizations. Emphasis on developing patterns and strategies
of organizational management in a dynamic environment as affected by the interaction of
material and human resources using the technique of applied social and management
sciences. Prerequisite: declared major.
MGT 324 Organizational Communication (W) 4 cr
A study of written and oral communication in organizations. Emphasis
is given to communication theory, including organization flows and barriers as well as the
psychology of communicating effective, neutral, negative and persuasive messages and the
preparation of formal written reports. Prerequisites: EH 101, EH 102 and declared major.
MGT 332 Legal Environment of Business I 4 cr
Introduction to the legal process and analysis of basic principles
of law as applied to business, including contracts, torts, property, agency, Uniform
Commercial code, governmental regulation, international law, and ethical considerations.
Prerequisite: Junior status.
MGT 333 Legal Environment of Business II 4 cr
A continuing study of common law and regulatory issues in business.
Topics typically include business organizations, antitrust, bankruptcy, debtor-creditor
relations, secured transactions, professional liability, and government regulation in the
areas of consumer, employment, environmental, and securities law. Prerequisite: MGT 332.
MGT 350 Management Information Systems 4 cr
The analysis and design of management information systems. Analysis
of the functional areas of business and integration of computer tools to satisfy
management information requirements. Prerequisites: MGT 322, MGT 396, MKT 371, FIN 341,
ACC 212.
MGT 351 Human Resource Management 4 cr
Principles, policies, and practices used to develop a sound human
resource management program in the business organization. Among the topics included are
job analysis, employment, organization development, employee development and evaluation,
wage and salary administration and labor relations. Prerequisite: MGT 322.
MGT 391 Computers in Business 4 cr
Designed to study current developments of computer applications in
business. Some programming for small business applications is required. The emphasis is on
current developments, applications, and documentation of results. Prerequisite: CIS 150.
MGT 396 Operations Management 4 cr
Operations Management introduces the student to the planning and
control of operations and resources in all types of firms. Topics include the production
function, the planning function, capacity and facilities planning, scheduling, inventory
control, project management, and quality assurance. Prerequisites: BMS 250, MGT 322.
MGT 398 Total Quality Management 4 cr
Introductory course in Total Quality Management, covering the basic
concepts of continuous improvement, customer orientation, employee involvement and teams,
the cost of quality, and quality assessment.
MGT 425 Business Policy and Strategy in a 4 cr
Global Economy (W) The culmination
course in business and management education. Interdisciplinary and global in nature, the
course uses the case method to develop a top management perspective in which all business
disciplines are integrated into the organization's effective total functioning.
Prerequisite: Seniors who will graduate within two quarters.
MGT 430 Operations Research 4 cr
The application of mathematical models to managerial problems.
Topics include linear programming, transportation and assignment models, integer
programming, network analysis, dynamic programming, goal programming, decision analysis,
simulation, and Markov processes. Prerequisite: MGT 396.
MGT 450 Organizational Staffing 4 cr
A detailed study of the function of employee staffing in a modern
work organization. Emphasis on job analysis, criterion development, development and use of
employment tests, validation of selection techniques, and statistical methods for making
fair employment decisions. Course work includes a comprehensive group staffing project.
Prerequisites: MGT 320, MGT 351, BMS 250.
MGT 451 Employee Training and Development 4 cr
An applied course which details the training and development
function. Content areas of job analysis, training needs analysis, training program
development and implementation, and program evaluation will be incorporated in a
comprehensive training and development project. The legal and psychological implications
of performance evaluation in training and development are also reviewed. Prerequisites:
MGT 320 and MGT 351.
MGT 452 Labor and Employment Law 4 cr
Analysis of significant legal issues in labor and employment law,
including labor-management relations, wage and hour laws, safety and health laws,
retirement, welfare, and privacy laws. Emphasis on federal legislation and developing case
law. Prerequisite: MGT 351. MGT 332 strongly recommended.
MGT 453 Fair Employment Practice 4 cr
A detailed treatment of illegal discrimination in employment.
Emphasis on federal law, executive orders, and agency guidelines which prohibit illegal
discrimination and landmark judicial decisions which interpret antidiscrimination laws.
Statistical applications required to illustrate measurement standards in the Uniform
Guidelines on Employee Selection. Prerequisites: MGT 320, MGT 351, ST 175.
MGT 454 Compensation Administration 4 cr
Study of the problems of compensation administration in public and
private organizations, with emphasis on the determinants of wage and salary levels and
structures. Topics covered include job analysis, worker-trait-requirements analysis, job
evaluation, incentive pay systems, merit and seniority payments, executive compensation,
employee benefits development and administration, and wage and salary control.
Prerequisites: MGT 320 and MGT 351.
MGT 455 Collective Bargaining 4 cr
Course focuses on effective practices in the organizing,
negotiating, and administering phases of collective bargaining. Examination of the
relevant public policy issues involving collective bargaining. Prerequisite: MGT 351.
MGT 456 Current Issues in 4 cr
Human Resource Management A capstone course in human resource
management. The seminar format covers state-of-the-art issues in human resource management
which are new or not well developed in existing texts. Assignments include at least one
major paper based on library research and oral presentations in class. Students work
closely with the professor in the preparation of both written and oral communications.
Prerequisites: MGT 351 and two of the following: MGT 450, 451, 453 or 454.
MGT 457 Current Issues in Labor-Management 4 cr
Relations A capstone course in
labor-management relations. The seminar format covers state-of-the-art issues in
labor-management relations which are new or not well developed in existing texts.
Assignments include at least one major paper based on library research and oral
presentations in class. Students work closely with the professor in preparation of both
written and oral communications. Prerequisites: MGT 351 & MGT 455.
MGT 459 Developing Management Thought 4 cr
The objective of the course is to help the students gain an
understanding of the direction of evolving managerial thinking with emphasis upon the
latest managerial techniques, including organizational development and the behavioral
aspects of management. Prerequisite: Senior standing.
MGT 460 Organizational Development and Change 4 cr
Provides insight into the theory and practice of organization change
and development. It bridges the gap between theory and practice and emphasizes the process
of improving both organizations and individuals. Topics covered encompass understanding
organizations and how they change, intervention strategies and methods for improving
organizations, quality of work-life approaches, and strategic considerations in
system-wide change. Prerequisite: Senior standing.
MGT 465 Strategic Management in a Global Environment 4 cr
An overview of the strategic management function in the business
firm with emphasis on the challenges, opportunities and threats created by today's
interdependent world economy for all firms, multinational and domestic. Exploration of
similarities and differences in management and human resource practices, issues pertaining
to cultural diversity and ethical concerns, and/or other topics of contemporary interest.
Prerequisite: Senior standing.
MGT 472 High Performance Organizations 4 cr
This course examines the role of organization culture, leadership,
employee involvement, use of teams, and human resource practices in developing and
sustaining high performance organizations that practice the principles of total quality
management. Prerequisite: Senior standing.
MGT 475 Strategic Quality Planning 4 cr
This course examines the strategic role of quality in planning
concepts and methodologies useful for quality management. Prerequisite: MGT 396.
MGT 484 Continuous Quality Improvement 4 cr
Designed to study the foundation concepts of continuous quality
improvement including a review of the basic quality tools, selected management quality
tools and with emphasis on the integration of data collection, data analysis, and decision
making processes. Needs identification, and the plan-do-study-act process. Prerequisites:
BMS 300 and MGT 396.
MGT 486 Quality Control Management 4 cr
This is a practical working course. It deals primarily with various
types of Shewhart control charts and with various types of acceptance sampling systems and
procedures. The techniques studied are simple but powerful and have been widely used in
industry. Prerequisites: BMS 300 and MGT 396.
MGT 490 Special Topics 4 cr
Designed to provide senior students an opportunity to study selected
topics of particular interest. Prerequisite: Permission of the department chair and the
Associate Dean. (A student may count no more than four hours of Special Topics in the
Concentration.)
MGT 492 Seminar: Management 4 cr
Designed to help students bridge the gap between the management
theory and the realities involved in the practice of management. Topics include (1)
development of the human, social, and political skills of the student as an individual,
(2) business ethics, (3) global management issues, and (4) current trends in society that
affect business and management. Prerequisites: MGT 322 and Senior standing.
MGT 494 Directed Study in Management 4 cr
Primarily designed to give superior students an opportunity to study
some phase of management of particular interest. Conferences, a bibliography, and a formal
research report are required. Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing, a cumulative GPA
of 2.5 or better, and approval of the department chair and the Associate Dean following
the evaluation of a written proposal.
MGT 496 Management Internship 4 cr
The internship program is designed to give students practical
experience in their field of study. Students complete a directed project under the
supervision of a faculty advisor. No more than four hours of internship may be counted
toward a degree in the College of Business and Management Studies. Prerequisites: Junior
or senior standing, a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better, and approval of the department
chair and the Associate Dean following the evaluation of a written proposal.
MGT 501 Management of Organizations 4 cr
A study of Management theory, processes, and practices, including
selected production concepts. Emphasis upon organizational structure, managerial
functions, and decision making.
MGT 502 Organizational Behavior in 4 cr
Contemporary Organizations A study of
the behavioral approaches to management emphasizing individual and group behavioral
concepts, leadership, motivation, communication, conflict resolution, and recognizing the
multicultural reality of contemporary organizations. Prerequisite: MGT 322.
MGT 503 Management Information Systems 4 cr
An application course providing technical background for
understanding and raising issues in MIS. Topics include the structure and operation of
computer systems, hardware technology and software development, tools and methods for
development of computer systems, structure and components of Management Information
Systems, and using a computer to support operations and management.
MGT 505 Labor Relations 4 cr
A study in the union-employer relationship in the private sector,
including the organizing, contract negotiation, and administration phases of labor
relations. A simulated contract negotiations and a research project are included.
Prerequisite: MGT 322.
MGT 510 The Legal Environment of Business 4 cr
Detailed analysis of laws and regulations affecting contemporary
business organizations. Emphasis on legal aspects of employment and labor relations,
regulatory agencies, sales warranties, products liability, consumer protection,
anti-trust, securities, creditors' rights, and ethical considerations.
MGT 515 Business Policy and Administrative 4 cr
Action in a Global Economy An
integrative problem-solving course requiring the student to use the analytical tools he
has acquired in the several functional areas to address organizational issues in a global
economy. Case problems are used. Prerequisites: ACC 520, ECO 518, FIN 501, MGT 502, MGT
332, MKT 520.
MGT 520 Human Resource Management 4 cr
Provides an overview of the personnel/human resource function in the
business firm. Topics covered include human resource planning, recruitment, selection,
compensation administration, employee training, management development, employee
involvement, and organization development. Prerequisite: MGT 502.
MGT 525 Organizational Change and Development 4 cr
Course focuses on the forces causing organizational change and the
process of managing change. Explores the concepts, values, processes, technology, and
strategies of organizational change and development. Prerequisite: MGT 322.
MGT 530 Strategic Management in a Global Environment 4 cr
Provides an overview of the strategic management function in the
business firm, and an introduction to tools for strategic management in a interdependent
world. Emphasis is on macroenvironmental analysis and interpretation. Prerequisites: ECO
518, MGT 502, and MKT 520.
MGT 535 Operations Management 4 cr
Operating and managing the firm. Topics include goal setting,
forecasting, economic analysis of alternative production methods, location and facilities
planning, project planning and scheduling, work measurement, and quality control. This
course will involve the use of the computer in selected areas.
MGT 540 Survey of Quantitative Methods 4 cr
The dynamic application of the resources of Operations Research to
create an immediate, working solution to some actual, total, continuing problems; and a
process for updating that solution over time. Prerequisite: MGT 545 or its equivalent.
MGT 545 Statistical Analysis 4 cr
An examination of basic statistical concepts used in business
analysis. Topics include fundamental concepts of probability, sampling, statistical
estimation, test of hypothesis, analysis of variance, and multivariate analysis. Emphasis
is placed on the use of statistical techniques for business decision making.
MGT 560 Business Research 4 cr
The collection, analysis, and presentation of research information
for purpose of business decision making. The student will be required to prepare a
research proposal, collect the relevant data, perform the required quantitative analysis,
and prepare a final research report.
MGT 590 Special Topics 4 cr
Designed to provide graduate students an opportunity to study
selected topics. Prerequisites: permission of department chair and director of graduate
studies. A student may count no more than 4 hours of Special Topics in the M.B.A. degree
program.
MGT 594 Independent Study 4 cr
Readings and research on selected topics. Conferences and formal
research report required. Prerequisites: permissions of department chair and Director of
Graduate Studies.
