MUL 100 Introduction to Music 4 cr
Music, what it is and how to listen to it; basic materials of music
and the great style periods of music literature. Attendance at approved concerts is
required.
MUL 201 Contemporary Music 4 cr
An introduction to music-literature trends in the 20th century.
MUL 202 Music of the Americas 4 cr
An introduction to music in the Americas and its role in American
culture, past and present.
The preceding introductory courses require no previous experience in
music.
MUL 334, 335, 336 History of Music (W) 4 cr each qtr
Music of the Western World from pre-Christian times to the present:
evolution of forms, styles and media. Prerequisite: MUT 213 for music majors. MUT 113 for
music minors, and permission of Department for others. To be taken in sequence.
MUL 437 Keyboard Literature 3 cr
Major works and styles in the keyboard literature from the English
virginalists through Beethoven. Required for piano majors. Permission of department chair
for others. Offered in 1997-98 and alternate years.
MUL 438 Keyboard Literature 3 cr
Major works and styles in the keyboard literature from Schubert
through the contemporary period. Required for piano majors. Prerequisite: MUL 437.
Permission of the department chair for others. Offered in 1997-98 and alternate years.
MUL 442 Organ Literature 3 cr
Music for pipe organ, both secular and sacred. Prerequisite: MUL 336
or equivalent. Offered in 1997-98 and alternate years.
MUL 443 Vocal Solo Literature 3 cr
Major works of the Italian, German, and English literature. Required
for voice majors. Permission of department chair required for others. Offered in 1997-98
and alternate years.
MUL 444 Vocal Solo Literature 3 cr
Major works of the French, Oratorio, and Opera literature. Required
for voice majors. Permission of department chair required for others. Offered in 1997-98
and alternate years.
MUL 494 Directed Studies 1-4 cr
An individual project concerned with the student's special
interests. Prerequisite: Special permission of department chair. May be repeated for a
maximum of nine hours' credit.
MUL 530 Symphonic Literature 3 cr
A survey of the development of the symphony and related forms from
its origins through the twentieth century.
MUL 531 Woodwind Literature 3 cr
A survey of the major works of the solo, concert, and chamber music
repertoire for woodwind instruments.
