MUT 111, 112, 113 Basic Music Theory I, II, III 4 cr each qtr
Elementary part-writing in two, three, and four voices. Sight-singing, ear-training, and keyboard harmony. Prerequisite: Satisfactory score on placement test. Must be taken in sequence.

MUT 211, 212, 213 Intermediate Music Theory 4 cr each qtr
I, II, III A continuation of elementary theory. Chromatic harmony and remote modulation; sight-singing, ear-training, keyboard harmony. Prerequisite: MUT 113. To be taken in sequence.

MUT 311 Basic Counterpoint 3 cr
Elementary contrapuntal procedures in 18th century style. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 312 Music Forms and Analysis 3 cr
Standard forms of music and the development of techniques of analysis. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 313 Instrumentation 3 cr
Basic scoring techniques of the instruments of the orchestra and band. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 314 Introduction to Composition 3 cr
Compositional techniques and the writing of original compositions for solo instruments and small ensembles. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 411 Choral Arranging 3 cr
Arranging for treble, bass, and mixed choral groups with and without accompaniments. Prerequisites: MUT 213, 311, and 312 or permission of department chair. Offered in 1997-98 and alternate years.

MUT 412 Orchestration 3 cr
The techniques of scoring for the orchestra. Prerequisite: MUT 313. Offered in 1997-98 and alternate years.

MUT 413 Band Arranging 3 cr
The techniques of scoring for the modern concert wind band. Prerequisite: MUT 313. Offered in 1997-98 and alternate years.

MUT 414 16th Century Counterpoint 3 cr
Modal counterpoint in the style of the 16th century. Prerequisite: MUT 213 or equivalent. Offered in 1997-98 and alternate years.

MUT 415 Canon and Fugue 3 cr
The techniques of writing canon and fugue in tonal style. Prerequisite: MUT 311.

MUT 416, 417, 418 20th Century Techniques 2 cr each qtr
Compositional techniques of the 20th century. Impressionistic, serial, and other contemporary techniques or systems. Prerequisite: MUT 213. To be taken in sequence.

MUT 419 Advanced Analysis 3 cr
Analytical techniques and problems. Prerequisite: MUT 312.

MUT 420, 421, 422 Composition I, II, III 3 cr each qtr
Original work in musical composition. Prerequisite: MUT 314. To be taken in sequence.

MUT 490 Special Topics 1-4 cr
Special topics in music theory and composition. May be repeated for a maximum of twelve hours' credit when content varies.

CONDUCTING (MUT)

MUT 361 Fundamentals of Conducting 4 cr
Basic baton technique; simple and complex rhythms; score reading; practical choral and instrumental conducting techniques. Prerequisite: MUT 213.

MUT 362 Instrumental Conducting 4 cr
Advanced baton technique; psychology of rehearsal; interpretative and conducting techniques for instrumental organizations. Prerequisite: MUT 361 or equivalent.

MUT 364 Choral Conducting and Literature 4 cr
Advanced conducting with attention to the harmonic and formal analysis of choral works of all periods; special emphasis on performance practice. Prerequisite: MUT 361 or equivalent.

MUT 500 Graduate Recital No credit
Graduate recital. To be taken in conjunction with a 500-level applied music course.
