PE 100 Concepts of Physical Activity 3 cr
An introduction course designed to show students the contribution of
physical activity to preventive health. Students learn how to evaluate themselves, their
body type, and the activities that are best for them.
PE 101 PE Activity 1 cr
Instruction and practice in basic skills. A varying content course
treating physical activity. The student may choose from a number of specific individual
type sports skills that will be designated prior to each quarter. May be repeated for
credit.
PE 102 Weight Training 1 cr
A progressive conditioning course using isotonic contraction for the
development of strength and muscular endurance. May be repeated for credit.
PE 103 PE Activity 1 cr

treating physical activity. The student may choose from a number of specific sports skills
that will be designated prior to each quarter. May be repeated for credit. An additional

PE 106 Gymnastics 1 cr
Instruction and practice in gymnastic skills. A varying-content
course treating different skill levels in gymnastics. May be repeated for credit.
PE 107 PE Activity 1 cr
Instruction and practice in basic skills. A varying content course
treating physical activity. The student may choose from a number of specific sports skills
that will be designated prior to each quarter. May be repeated for credit. An additional
fee will be charged for these activities.
PE 110 Dance 1 cr
Instruction and practice in dance. A varying-content course treating
different types of dance such as but not limited to social, folk, square, and dance
performance. May be repeated for credit.
PE 113 Creative Dance 1 cr
An introduction to the dance as an art form; the vocabulary of
movement as a means of self-expression. May be repeated for credit.
PE 114 Aerobic Dancing 1 cr
Aerobic dancing is a physical fitness program that offers complete
and effective conditioning. It involves jogging, jumping, lunging, kicking, and stretching
to music.
PE 117 Ballet 1 cr
Instruction and practice in ballet. A varying-content course
treating the different skill levels of ballet with emphasis on body placement through
barre and centre exercises. May be repeated for credit.
PE 118 Jazz 1 cr
Instruction and practice in jazz. A varying-content course treating
the various skill levels of jazz with emphasis on correct body placement through isolation
and locomotor techniques. May be repeated for credit.
PE 119 Modern Dance 1 cr
Instruction and practice in modern dance. A varying-content course
with exposure to various skill levels and modern dance styles. May be repeated for credit.
PE 120 Tennis (Basic) 1 cr
Instruction and practice in beginning and intermediate tennis. May
be repeated for credit.
PE 121 Golf (Basic) 1 cr
A fundamentals course stressing rules, strategy, and basic strokes,
with opportunity for participation. May be repeated for credit.
PE 122 Bowling 1 cr
Fundamental skills, rules, and strategy, with opportunity for
participation. Requires special fee. May be repeated for credit.
PE 123 Archery 1 cr
Fundamental techniques including target practice. May be repeated
for credit.
PE 125 Badminton 1 cr
Instruction and practice in beginning and intermediate badminton.
May be repeated for credit.
PE 127 Saltwater Fishing 1 cr
Instruction in and application of the principles of saltwater
fishing to include care and repair of equipment, knowledge of fish habitat, lures and
uses, and state conservation laws. May be repeated for credit.
PE 128 Freshwater Fishing 1 cr
Instruction in and application of the principles of freshwater
fishing to include care and repair of equipment, knowledge of fish habitat, lures and
uses, and state conservation laws. May be repeated for credit.
PE 130 Swimming (Non-swimmers) 1 cr
Beginning swimming and water safety. May be repeated for credit.
PE 131 Intermediate Swimming 1 cr
Development of stroke mechanics with emphasis on the breast stroke,
side stroke, front crawl, and elementary back stroke, water safety, including
drown-proofing. May be repeated for credit.
PE 135 Canoeing 1 cr
Instruction in the fundamentals of canoeing for those not familiar
with small craft. Prerequisite: intermediate swimmer level. May be repeated for credit.
PE 141 Softball 1 cr
Fundamental skills, rules, and strategy. May be repeated for credit.
PE 142 Volleyball 1 cr
Fundamental skills, rules, and strategy. May be repeated for credit.
PE 143 Basketball 1 cr
Fundamental skills, rules and strategy. May be repeated for credit.
PE 144 Soccer 1 cr
Fundamental skills, rules, and strategy. May be repeated for credit.
PE 147 Racquetball 1 cr
Develop correct techniques, skills, fundamentals, and strategy of
racquetball. Opportunity for participation and competition in single and doubles play.
Requires special fee. May be repeated for credit.
PE 150 Scuba 1 cr
Basic diving, including safety, diving theory, practical pool work,
and open-water checkouts. Prerequisite: Ability to swim 300 yards. Requires special fee.
PE 151 Shooting 1 cr
Instruction and practice in trap and skeet shooting. A
varying-content course treating different skill levels of trap shooting or skeet shooting.
Includes shooting techniques and safety principles. Requires special fee. May be repeated
for credit.
PE 155 Martial Arts 1 cr
Instruction and practice in the various oriental martial arts
techniques. A varying-content course treating the different skill levels of karate, judo,
and kung-fu. May be repeated for credit. Requires special fee.
PE 157 ICA-Varsity Sports 1 cr
Restricted to members of South Alabama varsity athletic teams by
special permission of the respective coaches. Includes but not limited to basketball,
baseball, track, golf, tennis, and volleyball. May be repeated for credit.
PE 166 Movement, Rhythms, and 4 cr
Developmental Activities Movement exploration experiences,
developmental games, rhythmic and dance activities are explained, developed, and
practiced. Clinical or field experience required.
PE 201 Orientation to Health and Physical Education 4 cr
A comprehensive overview of the field of health, physical education,
leisure services, and safety with opportunities for exposure to institutions, agencies,
and self-evaluation.
PE 202 Gymnastics for Men 2 cr
Develops skills and technique in gymnastics for working men's
apparatus and floor exercise. Progression in difficulty.
PE 203 Gymnastics for Women 2 cr
Develops skills and technique in gymnastics by working on women's
apparatus and floor exercise. Progression in difficulty.
PE 214 Movement Education and Rhythmic Activities 4 cr
The exploration of human movement through guided movement
experiences in relation to time, space, force, and flow, including instruction and
practice in basic movement skills, fundamental rhythmic activities and dance. Field
experience required.
PE 231 ARC Lifeguard Training 4 cr
Prepares for Senior Red Cross Life Saving certification. Includes
forms of rescue, strokes for life saving purposes, disrobing in water, releasing of
cramps, swimming rescues, recovery of submerged victims, small-craft rescue, artificial
resuscitation, and ice rescue. Prerequisites-: Intermediate swimmer level.
PE 246* Developmental Activities for Children 4 cr
Instruction and practice in low organized games, lead-up games,
recreational games, playground apparatus activities, and mat tumbling for children. Field
experiences in method and content required.
PE 270 Basic Motor Learning 4 cr
Study of the psychological, experimental, developmental, and social
aspects of learning in the psychomotor domain.
PE 273 Officiating Sports - Fall 2 cr
Rules, interpretations, and techniques for officiating volleyball
and basketball; field experiences required. Students may become
certified officials with Alabama High School Athletic Association.
PE 275 Officiating Sports - Spring 2 cr
Rules, interpretations, and techniques for officiating track and
field and softball; field experiences required. Students may become certified officials
with the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
PE 278 Sociological Aspects of Sports 4 cr
Designed to meet needs and interests of students in all disciplines.
Primary aim is to promote a better understanding of the role of sport in contemporary
American society.
PE 300 Coaching Track and Field 4 cr
History, development of modern techniques, theory, and fundamentals
of track and field. Methods of coaching, organizational problems, and strategy involved,
with opportunity for practical application.
PE 310 Coaching of Gymnastics 4 cr
Theory and practice. All phases of men's and women's apparatus and
floor exercising, including how to conduct a gymnastic meet.
PE 312 Coaching Volleyball 4 cr
Fundamentals, theory, history, development, and modern techniques of
power volleyball. Methods coaching, organizational problems and strategy.
PE 314 Basic Movement Education 2 cr
The exploration of human movement through guided movement
experiences in relation to time, space, and force, including instruction and practice in
movement awareness activities, fundamental locomotor and non-locomotor, manipulative and
everyday living skills. Field experiences in method and content.
PE 351 Individual and Dual Sports 4 cr
Techniques and methods of teaching individual and dual sports.
Emphasis is on skills, strategy, and application of rules.
PE 352 Team Sports 4 cr
Techniques and methods of teaching team sports. Emphasis is on
skills, strategy, and application of rules.
PE 371* Physical Education in the Elementary School 4 cr
The physical education curriculum for grades one to six. Field
experience in the application of method and content. This is a prerequisite for student
teaching. Prerequisite: PE 166. Admission to Candidacy or Permission of Instructor.
PE 374 Functional Creative Dance 4 cr
Methods and resources for use in teaching creative dance. Experience
in presentation of dance techniques and composition work.
PE 375 Coaching Football 4 cr
Fundamentals, theory, history, development and modern techniques of
football. Methods of coaching, organizational problems, and strategy.
PE 376 Coaching Basketball 4 cr
Fundamentals, theory, history, development, and modern techniques of
basketball. Methods of coaching, organizational problems, and strategy.
PE 377 Coaching Baseball 4 cr
Fundamentals, theory, history, development, and modern techniques of
baseball. Methods of coaching, organizational problems, and strategy.
PE 380 Kinesiology 4 cr
The application of mechanical and anatomical principles of the study
of human movement.
PE 381* Evaluation and Measurement in Health 4 cr
and Physical Education Analyses include
elementary statistical procedures, evaluation, interpretation, and use of tests and other
measurement devices in health education and physical education. A prerequisite for student
teaching.
PE 382 Athletic Training and Conditioning 4 cr
Survey and study of the basic techniques and practices of athletic
training and conditioning. The prevention and care of injuries, as well as the recognition
and use of therapeutic equipment in the treatment of athletic injuries will be examined.
Development of basic athletic training skills through practical experiences in the use of
preventive and protective techniques of adhesive tape application are also provided.
PE 383 Fundamentals and Strategies for 4 cr
Teaching and Coaching Soccer Fundamentals,
theory, history, development, and techniques of soccer. Strategies for teaching and
coaching; opportunities for learning fundamentals.
PE 385 Evaluation and Treatment of Athletic Injuries I 4 cr
A study of athletic injuries to the lower extremities and lumbar
spine. Prevention, evaluation, and management of these injuries will be explored along
with common surgical procedures associated with these sports related injuries and
conditions.
PE 386 Evaluation and Treatment of Athletic Injuries II 4 cr
Prevention, evaluation, and management of injuries to the head,
neck, upper extremities, and the abdomen will be discussed in detail. Field and clinical
strategies for the identification of signs and symptoms will be explored along with common
surgical procedures used to treat upper extremity and axial injuries.
PE 429 Opening School Laboratory Experience 2 cr
Professional laboratory experiences of observation and participation
for a two week period at the opening of school.
PE 430* Student Teaching-Early Childhood/Elementary 8 cr
Observation and supervised teaching with opportunity for study and
discussion of problems and issues encountered in the Early Childhood or Elementary level.
Students will be placed with a person holding a valid teaching certificate in the
appropriate field. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Candidacy.
PE 452* Methods of Teaching Physical Education (W) 4 cr
Assists the student in organizing materials and in developing
methods of teaching physical education in middle schools and in high schools.
PE 460* Student Teaching-Middle School/Secondary 8 cr
Observation and supervised teaching with opportunity for study and
discussion of problems and issues encountered in the middle school or high school.
Students will be placed with a person holding a valid teaching certificate in the
appropriate field. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Candidacy.
PE 461* Physical Education for Atypical Children 4 cr
and Youth Principles and techniques for
adapting physical education activities to meet the needs of children with special
problems. Teaching candidacy required for Special Education majors ONLY.
PE 465 Adapted Physical Education for the 4 cr
Mentally Retarded Designed to give the
student an understanding of the motor and sensory disturbances unique to retarded children
along with activities modified to meet the unique needs of retardates.
PE 467 Adapted Physical Education for 4 cr
the Physically Handicapped Designed to
enable adapted physical educators to develop an understanding of individuals with physical
and multiple disabilities so they can successfully devise activities that meet their
special needs and limitations.
PE 469 Adapted Physical Education for the 4 cr
Emotionally Disturbed and Learning Disabled Designed to enable adapted physical educators to develop competencies in
planning, organizing, and conducting movement and leisure experiences for the emotionally
disturbed and learning disabled.
PE 470* Student Teaching in the N-12 Program 16 cr
Observation and supervised teaching with opportunity for study and
discussion of problems and issues encountered in the N-12 program. Students will be placed
with a person holding a valid teaching certificate in the appropriate field. Prerequisite:
Permission of Department.
PE 473 Problems in Health and Physical Education 4 cr
Special problems are assigned to individuals and to groups of
students.
PE 474 Teaching the Dance 4 cr
Techniques and materials for teaching and supervising folk, square,
and social dance.
PE 475 Organizations and Administration of 4 cr
Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services (W) Types of programs, administrative organizations, scope, personnel,
policies, functions, and duties of supervisors.
PE 476 Physiology of Exercise 4 cr
A consideration of system responses and adaptions of the body to
exercise and training.
PE 477 Water Safety Instruction 4 cr
Advanced swimming and lifesaving with opportunities for teaching
water safety. Students may qualify for American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
certification. Prerequisite: ARC Advanced Lifesaving Certificate and Swimmer-level skills.
PE 480 Rehabilitation of Athletic Injuries 4 cr
Methods and techniques in the selection, application, and
modification of various rehabilitation programs and protocols used to treat injuries to
athletes and the physically active. Theory, application, and research of these various
conditioning and rehabilitation techniques are presented to address both psychological and
physical parameters of muscular strength, endurance, power, flexibility, proprioception,
and cardiovascular conditioning.
PE 481 Therapeutic Modalities in Athletic Training 4 cr
Methods and techniques of various therapeutic modalities commonly
used by athletic trainers and other allied health professionals serving the physically
active are introduced. Theory, application, and research of these various modalities are
presented.
PE 482 Advanced Athletic Training 4 cr
A concentrated study (by means of participation, observation,
discussion, and research) of advanced topics in the prevention, evaluation, and
rehabilitation of traumatic and non-traumatic athletic injuries, as well as injuries to
children and older adults.
PE 490 Special Topics in HPELS 4 cr
A varying content course treating various aspects of health,
physical education, and leisure service. May be repeated for credit when course content
varies.
PE 494 Directed Study in Health, PE and 2 or 4 cr
Leisure Services Directed research.
Prerequisite: Permission of Department. No more than two directed studies can be counted
toward the Bachelor's Degree and Class B Certification.
PE 495 Internship in HPELS 1-12 cr
Observation and supervised practicum experiences with opportunities
for study and discussion of problems and issues encountered in the practical and
theoretical setting. May be repeated for credit not to exceed 16 hours. Prerequisite:
Special Permission.
