PSY 201 Psychology of Black Experience 4 cr
Theories and principles of psychology pertaining to the experience
of black Americans. Includes the nature and function of prejudice, discrimination,
stereotyping, the determinants of self image of black Americans, and the development of
black social movement. No prerequisite. Offered and required for a minor in
African-American Studies. (See Interdisciplinary Programs, African-American Studies.)
NOTE: Psychology 210 and Psychology 211 are prerequisites to all
subsequent courses in the department except Psychology 222 and Psychology 317. The
prerequisite for Psychology 317 is Psychology 210. Some courses in the department have
additional prerequisites as prescribed.
PSY 210 General Psychology I 4 cr
The first of a two-quarter sequence in general psychology designed
to survey the basic theories, concepts, principles, and research findings in the field.
PSY 211 General Psychology II 4 cr
Concludes the survey of general psychology begun in PSY 210.
Prerequisite: PSY 210.
PSY 222 Research Design and Analysis 4 cr
Logic, design, and analysis in psychological research. Prerequisite:
ST 175 or permission of department chair.
PSY 290 Special Topics 1-4 cr
Selected topics in psychology. May be repeated for credit when
course content varies.
PSY 317 Introduction to Development Psychology 4 cr
An introduction to the growth of the human organism from conception
through senescence with emphasis on physical, social, and psychological development.
Prerequisite: PSY 210. Credit not granted toward a major in psychology.
PSY 331 Social Psychology 4 cr
Effects of social and cultural factors upon individual and group
behavior.
PSY 341 Psychology of Personality 4 cr
A survey of some of the historically influential thoughts about the
nature of human personality.
PSY 352 Psychology of Childhood 4 cr
The developmental and psychosocial aspects of childhood.
PSY 353 Psychology of Adolescence 4 cr
The developmental and psychosocial aspects of adolescence.
PSY 354 Adulthood and Late Life 4 cr
The developmental and psychosocial aspects of adulthood and Late
Life.
PSY 371 Abnormal Psychology 4 cr
Nature and development of deviant behavior.
PSY 375 Introduction to Psychological Testing 4 cr
Theories and principles of psychological testing. Prerequisite: ST

PSY 380 Physiological Psychology 4 cr
The structure and function of the brain and nervous system as they
relate to behavior.
PSY 383 Experimental Psychology-Operant (W) 4 cr
The experimental analysis of behavior emphasizing research design
and methods used in the study of conditioning and learning. Fee.
PSY 394 Directed Study 1-4 cr
Specific topics and research findings introduced through the reading
of appropriate professional and scientific literature. Prerequisite: Consent of department
chair.

The historical foundations of modern psychology.
PSY 412 Systems of Psychology (W) 4 cr
An analytical survey of the development of major theories in
psychology with emphasis on system evaluation. Areas covered include sensation,
perception, learning, motivation, thinking, emotion, personality, and social psychology.
PSY 425 Psychology of Learning 4 cr
Theories, experimental findings, and methods of investigation in
learning. Prerequisite: PSY 383 or equivalent.
PSY 432 Industrial Psychology 4 cr
Application of psychological principles and techniques to business,
industry, and government.
PSY 485 Perception 4 cr
Current theories and research in sensation and perception.
Prerequisite: PSY 380 or the equivalent.
PSY 487 Health Psychology (W) 4 cr
Current theories, research and applications in health psychology.
Prerequisites: PSY 222 and 380 or equivalent.
PSY 490 Special Topics 2-4 cr
Selected topics in psychology. May be repeated for credit when
course content varies.
PSY 494 Directed Studies 1-4 cr
Directed study and research. Prerequisite: Consent of department
chair.
PSY 499 Senior Honors Thesis 4-12 cr
Student conducts an independent research project under the
supervision of a faculty sponsor. Recommended for psychology majors planning graduate
school. Permission of department chair is required prior to registration. Prerequisites:
3.3 GPA, PSY 222, Junior status, Psychology major.
NOTE: Enrollment in psychology graduate courses is normally limited
to those students admitted to the Psychology Graduate Program. Requests for permission to
enroll from other graduate students will be considered on an individual basis. Such
requests should be directed to the department chair.
PSY 512 Child Psychopathology 4 cr
The etiology and description of deviant behavior patterns in
children and adolescents.
PSY 521 Quantitative Methods in Psychology 4 cr
Elements of modern statistics with emphasis upon theoretical
aspects. Includes sets and functions, probability theory, hypothesis testing,
analysis-of-variance models, correlation, regression, and distribution-free statistics as
they relate to psychology.
PSY 522 Experimental Design in Psychology 4 cr
Theories and principles of experimental design, with emphasis upon
application of statistical techniques; includes designs and analysis-of-factorial
experiments, Latin-square designs, analysis of covariance, multiple and partial
correlation, and regression as they relate to psychology.
PSY 525 Advanced Experimental Psychology 4 cr
Theories, principles, methods, and research in learning and related
areas.
PSY 526 Mental Retardation 4 cr
A study of behavioral theories and related research in mental
retardation.
PSY 531 Advanced Social Psychology 4 cr
An analysis of the current major theories, research topics, and
methodology in social psychology including such topics as attitude change, sexism,
interpersonal attraction, altruism, and population crowding.
PSY 541 Personality Theory 4 cr
A critical analysis and evaluation of major theories of personality
and how they relate to behavior.
PSY 561 Psychopathology 4 cr
Etiology and description of deviate behavior of children and adults
including prophylactic and therapeutic aspects. Prerequisite: PSY 541 or PSY 341, and PSY
371 or the equivalent.
PSY 571 Tests and Measurements 4 cr
Theories and methods of test construction and principles of
measurement and evaluation in the behavioral sciences.
PSY 575 Individual Testing 4 cr
Principles and methods of individual intelligence testing, including
the administration of the Stanford Binet and the Wechsler tests. Requires special
permission. Prerequisite: PSY 571 or the equivalent.
PSY 579 Advanced Psychological Testing 4 cr
Methods and procedures in administering and evaluating aptitude,
interest, and personality tests. Requires special permission. Prerequisites: PSY 561 and
PSY 575.
PSY 580 Advanced Physiological Psychology 4 cr
The structures and functions of physiological systems - muscular,
glandular, and nervous - and how they affect and relate to behavior.
PSY 589 Introduction to Intervention Techniques 4 cr
Theories, principles, and techniques of counseling, milieu theory,
and behavior modification. Requires special permission. Prerequisites: PSY 561 or the
equivalent.
PSY 590 Special Topics 4 cr
Selected topics in graduate psychology. This course may be repeated
by students if the topics are different.
PSY 594 Directed Studies 1-4 cr
Individual study under the direction of a member of the graduate
faculty. Prerequisite: Full standing status.
PSY 596 Professional Studies: Clinical Practicum 4-8 cr per
qtr
Practical experience in the application of psychological assessment
and treatment procedures in a variety of clinical settings; discussion of ethical and
professional issues. Students will receive intensive individual and group supervision.
Prerequisites: PSY 561, 575, 579, and 589; or permission of department chair.
PSY 599 Thesis 1-8 cr
Must be taken for a total of eight credit hours to satisfy degree
requirements.
