SPA 290 Speech Improvement for the Classroom 4 cr
Assessment and modification of minor speech problems in children and adults through application of speech-improvement techniques. Study of vocal hygiene. Open to non-majors.

SPA 291 Introduction to Speech Pathology 4 cr
and Audiology
Overview of the major types of communicative disorders emphasizing articulation and language disorders; role of the professional speech/language pathologist or audiologist. Prerequisite: SPA 290.

SPA 312 Fundamentals of Speech Science 4 cr
Comprehensive study of the anatomy and physiology of the speech production mechanism (respiration, phonation, and articulation); physiological phonetics; basic acoustic principles including acoustic phonetics. Prerequisites: BLY 152 and SPA 291.

SPA 313 Fundamentals of Hearing Science 4 cr
Integrated study of the anatomy and physiology of the hearing mechanism, quantification of sound, sound generation, and sound transmission emphasizing the role of the auditory system in the encoding and processing of simple and complex signals. Applications will be made to the clinical practice of hearing assessment. Prerequisite: SPA 312.

SPA 331 Normal Language Acquisition (W) 4 cr
Acquisition of communicative behavior in normal children during the first decade of life: development of phonology, semantics, syntax, pragmatics, cognition; communication as a biological process; clinical laboratory experience with young children. Prerequisite: SPA 291.

SPA 341 Clinical Phonetics 4 cr
Study of the dynamics of normal speech sound production. Application of phonetic science to the analysis of conversational speech. Prerequisites: SPA 291 and PSY 316 or EPY 251 or EPY 252.

SPA 414 Neurobiological Bases of 4 cr
Human Communication
Introduction to neuroscience and clinical neurology as they apply to the processes of normal and disordered communication. Topics include neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, neuropathologies and neurorehabilitation. Prerequisite: SPA 313.

SPA 431 Introduction to Language Disorders 4 cr
Evaluation of language dysfunction in children with attention to the development of appropriate assessment and treatment programs. Prerequisites: SPA 331.

SPA 441 Introduction to Articulation Disorders 4 cr
Study of the dynamics of disordered speech sound production. Techniques for the analysis and treatment of articulation problems. Prerequisite: SPA 331 and 341.

SPA 451 Introduction to Voice Disorders 4 cr
Study of normal production. Evaluation and management of voice disorders resulting from misuse of the vocal mechanism. Prerequisites: SPA 313.

SPA 461 Introduction to Fluency Disorders (W) 4 cr
A beginning course in stuttering and related disorders, with emphasis upon symptomatology, testing, rehabilitation, and prevention. Prerequisites: SPA 313 and 16 hours of PSY.

SPA 470 Basic Audiology 4 cr
Rationale and procedures for the components of the audiological test battery including case history, pure tone air and bone conduction testing, speech audiometry, immittance testing, pediatric testing, and audiologic screening. Discussion of common auditory pathologies and the associated audiometric test results, with emphasis on the interpretation of audiograms. Prerequisite: SPA 313.

SPA 471 Clinical Methods in Audiology 4 cr
Rationale and methods in puretone and speech audiometry, including masking procedures. Basic concepts in differential diagnostic procedures and test interpretation, including impedance measurement. Prerequisites: SPA 291 and 470.

SPA 472 Aural Rehabilitation 4 cr
A study of the basic concepts in the assessment and (re)habilitation of individuals with hearing loss. Covers the impact of hearing loss on the perception and production of speech and its impact on the communication process. Also includes a discussion of amplification, assistive devices and legislative mandates. Prerequisite: SPA 470.

SPA 480 Introduction to the Clinical Process (W) 2 cr
Introduction to the clinical setting; students will be introduced to the therapy planning and implementation. Observation in the Speech and Hearing Center. Prerequisites: Upper division standing; SPA 291, 331, 341; Permission of Clinic Director. Special fee: $25.00.

SPA 481 Issues in Clinical Practicum (W) 2 cr
A survey of issues related to assessment and treatment of communication disorders. Observation in the Speech and Hearing Center. Prerequisites: Upper division standing; SPA 480; Permission of Clinic Director.

SPA 482 Clinical Practicum (W) 2 cr
Supervised clinical experience with children exhibiting articulation and language disorders. Prerequisites: Upper division standing. SPA 431 and 441 and 481; Permission of Clinic Director.

SPA 490 Special Topics 2-4 cr
Topics to be determined by student need and interest. Content will vary. A subtitle identifying the topic will be entered on the student's record. May be repeated for a total of six credits.

SPA 494 Directed Independent Study 1-4 cr
Prerequisites: Senior standing and permission of department chair.

SPA 510 Introduction to Research Design 4 cr
A general presentation of research procedures and techniques that require the student to read and evaluate literature critically. Students will develop a research prospectus in this course.

SPA 521 Advanced Speech Science 4 cr
The study of physical and acoustic concepts involved in speech production and perception, including instrumental measurement and analysis.

SPA 522 Measurement of Language I 2 cr
Measurement and quantification of syntactic and semantic language behavior; emphasis on assessment and analysis methodologies.

SPA 523 Measurement of Language II 2 cr
Measurement and quantification of pragmatic language behavior; emphasis on assessment and analysis methodologies.

SPA 531 Advanced Language Disorders 4 cr
Advanced study in linguistic approaches, differential diagnosis, clinical management of language disorders. Prerequisite: SPA 431, 522, 523.

SPA 541 Advanced Articulation Disorders 4 cr
Advanced study of disordered, speech-sound production. Review of theories and research related to etiology, assessment, and treatment. Prerequisite: SPA 441 or equivalent.

SPA 551 Advanced Voice Disorders 4 cr
Advanced study of vocal pathology. Symptomatology, etiology, and treatment. Prerequisite: SPA 451 or equivalent.

SPA 561 Advanced Fluency Disorders 4 cr
Study of theories, research, and contemporary treatment procedures. Prerequisite: SPA 461 or equivalent.

SPA 570 Advanced Hearing Science 4 cr
Physical concepts related to the study of acoustics and sound measurement; anatomy and physiology of the auditory mechanism; psychoacoustics.

SPA 571 Advanced Procedures in Audiology 5 cr
Discussion of the practical and theoretical bases of the components of the diagnostic audiologic test battery including otoscopic examination, case history, pure tone air and bone conduction testing, speech testing, and immittance testing as well as special tests for evaluating pseudohypacusis and cochlear versus retrocochlear site-of-lesion. Laboratory exercises are included to enable students to become familiar with test procedures. Prerequisite: SPA 471 or equivalent.

SPA 572 Hearing Aids 4 cr
A review of electro-acoustic characteristics of amplification systems for the hearing impaired; hearing-aid standards; earmolds; hearing-aid evaluation procedures; and hearing-aid orientation in aural rehabilitation. Prerequisite: SPA 571 or permission of instructor.

SPA 573 Advanced Aural Rehabilitation 4 cr
Advanced study of concepts in the assessment and (re)habilitation of individuals with hearing loss. Covers the impact of hearing loss on the communication process. Also includes a discussion of educational and vocational needs of individuals with hearing loss, deaf culture, assistive devices and legislative mandates.

SPA 574 Advanced Hearing Aid Procedures 4 cr
An in-depth study of issues in the prescription and fitting of hearing aids and other amplification devices.

SPA 575 Medical Audiology 3 cr
A study of the pathology of the hearing mechanism including disease processes and pathophysiology of the peripheral and central hearing systems in humans.

SPA 576 Audiology for Speech-Language Pathologists 4 cr
Audiometric testing; audiogram interpretation and clinical and educational management of the hearing impaired. Not available for audiology majors.

SPA 577 Specialized Audiological Procedures 6 cr
A study of special diagnostic procedures used in audiology including auditory brainstem response, electronystagmography, otoacoustic emissions and tests of central auditory processing.

SPA 578 Pediatric Audiology 4 cr
Study of hearing loss in children including assessment techniques and procedures for early intervention. Prerequisite: SPA 571.

SPA 579 Noise Measurement and Hearing Conservation 3 cr
Techniques of measuring noise in the environment and industry. OSHA regulations and hearing conservation including industrial audiology. Prerequisite: SPA 571 or permission of instructor.

SPA 581 Neuromotor Disorders of Communication 3 cr
Review of neuroanatomy and physiology of sensori-motor systems, nature of neuromuscular pathologies; methods of assessment and rehabilitation of assessment and rehabilitation of neuromotor disorders speech production in children and adults; clinical laboratory experience.

SPA 582 Acquired Disorders of Language and Cognition 3 cr
Review of neuropsychology of communication; nature of acquired neuropathologies affecting central processes of language and cognition; methods of assessment and rehabilitation of acquired cognitive/linguistic disorders in children and adults; clinical laboratory experience.

SPA 583 Medical Speech Pathology/Dysphagia 4 cr
Anatomy and physiology of deglutition; nature of swallowing disorders and related diseases; methods of assessment and remediation.

SPA 585 Administration and Supervision in 4 cr
Communication Disorders
Organization, administration, evaluation, and supervision of policy and personnel in academic and clinical settings.

SPA 590 Special Topics 2-4 cr

SPA 591 Speech Pathology for Audiologists 4 cr
A study of specific topics in speech-language pathology for audiology majors. Not available for speech pathology majors.

SPA 593 Cranio-facial Anomalies and 2 cr
Speech-Language Disorders
Evaluation and remediation of speech-language problems associated with cleft lip/palate and other structural differences including dental occlusal hazards.

SPA 594 Directed Study 1-4 cr
Independent study under the direction of a member of the graduate faculty. May be repeated for a total of six credits. Requires permission of department chair.

SPA 595 Directed Independent Research 1-4 cr
May be taken for a maximum of four hours' credit. Requires permission of department chair.

SPA 596 Graduate Practicum in 1-2 cr
Speech-Language & Hearing
Supervised clinical experience in speech pathology and audiology. Requires permission of Clinical Director. Special fee: $15.00.

SPA 597 Advanced Management and Evaluation of 4 cr
Speech-Language Programs
Organizing speech-language programs for quality assurance. Evaluation procedures for internal and external accountability. Required for Class A Certification.

SPA 598 Field Externship 8 cr
Supervised clinical experience in a professional service facility. Prerequisite: Requires all course work, research, and clinical practicum preparation to be completed.

SPA 599 Thesis 1-8 cr
One to eight credits per quarter with a maximum of eight hours credit. Requires status of full-standing student.
