UNDERGRADUATE
The department provides undergraduate students with courses in Counselor Education,
Educational Media, and Educational Psychology, but it does not offer an undergraduate
degree program. The educational psychology courses offer basic psychological concepts that
undergird the educational process. In addition, the department seeks to provide
experiences that will assist the undergraduate student to acquire analytic tools and
observational skills necessary to deal with educational concerns. The courses are designed
to broaden and strengthen the student's preparation for dealing with professional
educational functions.
GRADUATE
The Department of Behavioral Studies and Educational Technology offers the Master of
Education degree in Educational Media, School Counseling, and School Psychometry, the
Master of Science degree in Community Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, and in
Instructional Design and Development, the Educational Specialist degree in Counselor
Education and Educational Media, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Instructional Design
and Development.
For certification as a school counselor or school psychometrist by the State Department of Education, one must complete a basic program in a teaching field. Eligibility for certification requires two years of appropriate professional experience, at least one of which must be in teaching. The initial certificate is good for eight years. Library Media certification requires one year classroom teaching experience.
COUNSELOR EDUCATION
PROGRAMS
The programs described below are designed to provide for the acquisition of skills and
competencies needed by the professional counselors and psychometrists working in
educational, agency, and rehabilitation settings.
A grade of "B" or better is required in the professional major sequences. The special requirements for Admission to Candidacy are:
Comprehensive Examination Type I is required.
The special requirements for completion of the program include demonstration of satisfactory performance in the prescribed curriculum and a written comprehensive examination.

EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST DEGREE PROGRAM
FOR THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR
(48 Quarter Hour Minimum Program; 24 hours must be at the 600 level)
The program for Educational Specialist in School Counseling is designed to provide a further level of specialization for the practitioner requiring higher scholarship and more in-depth understanding of school counseling. The program develops personnel who demonstrate a high quality of leadership either as school counselors or as instructional support personnel.

After completing 48 quarter hours of course work, the student must successfully complete a comprehensive Examination. Application forms for the Comprehensive Examination may be obtained from the Graduate Studies Office, ILB 115, or Student Services, ILB 120.

EDUCATIONAL MEDIA
PROGRAM
The Master of Education program in Educational Media prepares students to plan, design,
and administer library/media centers at most levels of education, including higher
education. Emphasis is on the design and development of instruction and the management of
educational information.
Persons who specialize in Educational Media shall have completed requirements for a certificate at the baccalaureate level in a teaching field and shall have at least one year of successful teaching experience prior to certification in Educational Media. The initial certificate is good for ten years. The certificate may be renewed by earning 18 quarter hours of graduate work in the certification area. Further certification requires demonstrated success as a library-media specialist and completion of a sixth-year program of study in library-media.
An average of "B" or better is required on all work attempted. A grade of "B" or better is required on all EDM courses.
In addition to the college requirements for Admission to Candidacy, the special requirements for Admission to Candidacy in Educational Media are:
A student may elect to write a thesis as a part of the program.
A thesis committee will be appointed to work with the student and to evaluate the thesis.
A written comprehensive examination covering all areas of the student's program is required in the certification program. A technology project covering all areas of the student's program is required in the non-certification program .

EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST DEGREE
PROGRAM IN EDUCATIONAL MEDIA
The overall goal of the Sixth-Year Program is the improvement of teaching. The specific
course offerings relating to the specialty field of Educational Media add to and
complement the common core of the program and provide additional information and skills
the Media Specialist needs to support the classroom teacher's efforts. Class A
certification in Educational Media is required.

INSTRUCTIONAL
DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The Master of Science degree program in Instructional Design and Development provides
students with the information and skill training to analyze instructional tasks, to design
and deliver instructional programs, and to perform evaluative procedures on instructional
products and services. The job market potential for graduates of the program includes the
management of in-service education in business and industry, health-related institutions
and agencies, military agencies, institutions of higher education, and related
self-employed activities.
REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION
ADMISSION TO CANDIDACY
The special requirements for admission to candidacy to the ID & D program are:
INTERNSHIP
All Instructional Design and Development students are required to complete an internship
of a minimum of 240 contact hours. Students must have completed all core courses prior to
enrolling for the internship. The internship component is designed to give students
practical experience in design, implementation, and/or evaluation of instructional
systems.
REQUIREMENTS FOR DEGREE
To qualify for the M.S. Degree in Instructional Design and Development, candidates must
satisfactorily complete the following program with a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 on
all work undertaken.
