UNDERGRADUATE
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers degree programs to prepare teachers for Early Childhood Education (N-3), Elementary Education (Grades 1-6), and High School. Additionally, the department offers programs for Nursery through Grade Twelve (N-12) teachers in art or music.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
The program in Early Childhood Education prepares teachers for nursery school to grade three. Satisfactory completion of the program and required tests lead to a recommendation for Class B Certification in Early Childhood Education.

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
The program in Elementary Education is designed to prepare teachers for grades one through six. Satisfactory completion of the program and accompanying tests lead to a recommendation for a Class B Certificate in Elementary Education.

The Department offers degree programs to prepare high school teachers, and nursery through grade twelve (N-12) teachers in art and music.

  1. HIGH SCHOOL OPTION
    This option is designed to prepare students to teach in high schools.

    1. PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (52 hours minimum)
      EDF 210, 211, 315, EPY 251, SPE 400, EDM 385 or 482; EPY 455; SED 340, 341; RED 351 or RED 458; SED 429, 464.
    2. TEACHING FIELDS
      Students must select two separate teaching fields or one Comprehensive Teaching Field. One third of the course work in each teaching field must be in the upper-division. (This requirement applies to separate teaching fields only.)

      1. LANGUAGES
        (a) FOREIGN LANGUAGES (52 hours required for each language selected).

        (a.1) FRENCH. LG 111, 112, 113, 211, 212, 213, 314, 315, 316, 322 or 323 or 324 or 325; SED 453; and eight (8) hours upper-division electives.

        (a.2) GERMAN. LG 151, 152, 153, 251, 252, 253, 361, 366, 367; SED 453, and ten (10) hours upper-division electives.

        (a.3) SPANISH. LG 131, 132, 133, 231, 232, 233, 335, 336, 340 or 341; LG 342 or 344 or 345 or 346; SED 453, and eight (8) hours of upper-division electives.

        (b) LANGUAGE ARTS (Comprehensive Teaching Field, 94 hours required).

        (d) GENERAL SCIENCE COMPOSITE (Comprehensive Teaching Field, 107 hours required)
        BLY 141, 142, 143 and twenty-three (23) hours in upper-division BLY electives; CH 114, 115 and six (6) hours in CH electives; GEO 111; GY 101, 102; NSE 403; PH 103, 111, 112, 113, and one (1) course from MA 120, 121, 131, 171, 172; ST 175; SED 456, an additional eight (8) hours in upper division BLY, CH, GY, or PH courses.
      4. SOCIAL SCIENCE
        Basic Social Science Core (Required for all social science teaching fields.)

        (a) GEOGRAPHY (44 hours required)
        GEO 111, 113, 114, 230, 351; SED 457, and 20 hours in approved GEO electives, 12 of which must be upper-division.

        (b) HISTORY (44 hours required)
        HY 101, 102, 235, 236, one of the following HY 103 or 104 or 227; HY 477 or 478, SED 457, and 16 hours in approved HY electives, 12 of which must be upper-division.

        (c) SOCIAL SCIENCE COMPOSITE (Comprehensive Teaching Field, 94 hours required)
        AN 100 or PHL 110; ECO 214, 215; GEO 111, 114 and 230; HY 101, 102, 235, 236; SED 457, and 24 hours in upper-division HY electives; PSC 130, 232 and PSC 250 or 270; SY 109, 112; and an additional 6 hours in upper division AN, ECO, GEO, PSC or SY courses.
  2. NURSERY THROUGH GRADE 12 OPTION
    This option is designed to prepare students to teach art or music at any grade level from nursery school through grade 12.

    1. HUMANISTIC AND BEHAVIORAL STUDIES (16 hours required)
      EDF 210, 211, EDF 315, EPY 251, and SPE 400.
    2. PROFESSIONAL STUDIES
      EDM 385 or EDM 482; EPY 455; SED 340, 341; RED 351 or 458; SED 429, 470 and required methods courses.
    3. TEACHING FIELDS
      1. ART (76 hours required)
        ARS 101, 121, 122, 123, 124; AED 440, 441; Select one course from each of four studio areas (choose from painting, ceramics, printmaking, crafts, sculpture, photography, computer art, and commercial design); three art history (ARH) courses; 20 hours in approved electives in ARH and ARS courses. (A minimum of 20 hours must be in upper-division work.)
      2. MUSIC
        (2.1) INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC (80 hours required) MUA 100; 12 hours in MUB primary instrument; 6 hours in MUA/MUE piano; MUE 141, 142, 241, 242, 341, 342, 345, 444; SED 455; MUT 111, 112, 113, 211, 212, 213, 361, 362, 412; 12 hours in MUO ensemble.

        (2.2) VOCAL/CHORAL MUSIC (82 hours required)
        MUA 100; 12 hours in MUA primary; 6 hours in MUA/MUB secondary applied; 6 hours in MUA/MUE secondary applied; MUT 111, 112, 113, 211, 212, 213, 312, 361, 412; MUE 444; SED 455, and MUE ensemble 12 hours.
