Educational Foundations
Educational Foundations courses are designed to help students throughout the College of
Education develop a critical perspective on the relationship between school and society.
Students use a variety of academic disciplines to study the problems of education.
Foundations courses focus on teachers, their occupation as educational reform has affected
it, and students as contemporary social forces have shaped them. The influences of social
class, race, ethnicity, and gender take center stage in every course. Although there are
no degree or certification programs in Educational Foundations, these courses support
undergraduate and graduate programs throughout the College.
GRADUATE
Educational Leadership
Educational Leadership courses empower students for advancement in educational service.
Leadership programs emphasize growth from the knowledge base through simulations to
practical application and career mobility. This Department offers two certification
programs approved by the Alabama State Department of Education for educational
administrators: a Class A Certificate program, and a Class AA program corresponding to the
Educational Specialist Degree. Students can also earn the Specialist Degree and qualify
for the Class AA Certificate as a licensure option within the Doctor of Philosophy program
in Instructional Design and Development. In addition, the Department offers Master's
Degree and Specialist Degree programs that do not lead to state certification.
Class A Certificate in Educational Administration
Students entering this program must have a master's degree, Alabama Class A certification
in an area other than Educational Administration, and three years of successful teaching

in each course at a 70% level of proficiency. The Class A Certificate, valid for 10 years,
