INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

Director: Stephen D. Morris (460-7161)

The International Studies major is a rigorous interdisciplinary program designed for students who wish to build a solid foundation for a career in international affairs. The program combines language fluency, international/area studies, and international business, and, as such, fulfills the requirements for both the major and minor. The faculty directing the major is drawn mostly from the departments of foreign languages and literatures, geography, history, political science, sociology and anthropology.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
Requirements for the major are threefold: (1) 18 semester hours that comprise the International Studies Core; (2) 36 semester hours from the list of required and elective courses in one of the Area Studies Concentrations (European or Latin American); and (3) one of the two 21 semester hour pre-professional options in place of a traditional minor. International Studies majors must also take ST 210 and are strongly encouraged to take IS 496 (Internship) and participate in a Study Abroad program during their course of study. Note than many of these courses will help fulfill some of the general education requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.

FACULTY ADVISORS
Students must be advised on a regular basis. Following an initial interview with the Director of International Studies Program, prospective majors are normally assigned an advisor on the basis of the student's choice of Area Studies Concentration. Advisors must either be members of the International Studies Advisory Committee or be designated by the program director so serve as an IS advisor.

Language Policy: Native or near-native speakers of a language who are not eligible to enroll in lower division courses in their language must see the Director of the International Studies Program to discuss approved substitutions.
