PIANO PROFICIENCY
All music majors must enroll in piano for credit each
semester until the piano proficiency examination is completed successfully.
Excess hours in piano required to complete the piano
proficiency examination may not be counted toward graduation in music. Should the student
desire to take additional hours in piano after passing the proficiency examination, these
hours may be counted.
Students who pass the piano proficiency examination
before completing the required four (4) hours in piano may elect to continue piano study
or may petition to substitute another applied area for the remaining hours.
The piano proficiency examination must be passed prior to
enrollment of a student in Senior Recital or Student Teaching.
PLACEMENT IN MUSIC THEORY
Students intending to take music theory must first take a Theory Placement
Examination. This applies to transfer students as well as students who begin basic theory
at the University of South Alabama. Contact the Music Office for details.
PLACEMENT IN APPLIED MUSIC
CLASSES
All students not previously enrolled in private music study at the
University of South Alabama must audition prior to enrolling. Contact the Music Office for
audition requirements and scheduling.
All students enrolled in private music study must fill out
a Teacher Preference card for each Applied Music course in which they are enrolled. These
forms must be filed in the Music Office by 5:00 p.m. on the first day of classes. Students
not complying with this requirement may not be assigned a private teacher.
APPLIED MUSIC
Applied music is an integral and vital part of the total education in the
field of music. In addition to performing in recitals, full-time music students are also
required to attend concerts and recital class for six semesters and take part in various
programs given during their course of study. In order to broaden the student's musical
experience, the student must choose at least one secondary performing medium.
Students choosing a minor in music must include applied
music courses at the concentration level.
Credit for applied music is based on the minimum practice
time per week, not on the length of the lesson period. Courses that show one hour's credit
require one 30-minute lesson per week with a minimum practice period of 30 minutes per
day. A two-hour course requires 60 minutes of lesson time a week and at least 60 minutes
of practice time per day. Those that show three hours' credit require 60 minutes of lesson
time per week with a minimum of two hours per day for practice. Satisfactory achievement
and development are best achieved by practicing twice the above minimum requirements.
A student may take no more than two applied music courses
in any given semester unless special permission is obtained from the student's advisor,
major applied teacher, and department chair.
Senior Recital Requirements
A senior recital for public presentation is required for the Bachelor of Arts and Music
Education Major and may be presented alone or in combination with no more than two other
students.
For performance majors in the program leading to the
Bachelor of Music Degree, a minimum of a partial junior recital and a full senior recital
is required.
MUSIC ORGANIZATIONS
The Department of Music sponsors performing organizations open to all
students of the University, providing satisfactory audition requirements have been met.
Ensemble participation is recognized as an essential literature class in music and music
education. The appropriate major ensemble (Band; Choir; String Ensemble) must be elected
each semester that a student is enrolled as a full-time student in music. All Bachelor of
Music Degree majors in guitar and piano must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 6
semester hours in a major ensemble, to be taken for three consecutive years and 1 semester
hour in another ensemble in which they will play their principal performing instrument.
Students are, in addition, encouraged to elect additional hours in both major and small
ensembles. Consult the appropriate curriculum in the section entitled Music Organizations
for the requirements. The organizations include the Concert Choir; University Chorale;
Uni-versity Symphonic Band; Jazz Band; Woodwind, Brass, Guitar, String, Percussion, and
Piano Ensembles; and University Opera Theatre.
Note: No more than twelve credits in this area are
applicable toward a degree.
APPLIED MUSIC LEVELS
100 Level - Elective study is designed for students
majoring in academic areas other than music.
200 Level - Secondary study is designed
for music majors or minors who desire to study in an applied area other than in their
primary applied field. Secondary study is typically structured to help students meet a
proficiency requirement.
300 Level - Concentration study is designed for B.A. and B.M. students
majoring in Music or Music Education. Enrollment at the concentration level is limited to
students who have successfully completed an applied music audition.
400 Level - Major study is designed for
the performance major. Enrollment at the major level is limited to students who have
successfully completed an applied music audition.
GRADUATE STUDIES
Although the Music Department has no graduate degree
programs, it offers courses at the graduate level for qualified students desiring graduate
study in music.
All incoming graduate students in music take placement
examinations in music theory and music history. In addition to these examinations,
incoming students must take a keyboard examination and perform an audition in their
primary performance area. On the basis of these examinations and auditions each student
plans a program of studies in consultation with an academic advisor in music. The program
of studies must be approved by the graduate students' advisory committee appointed by the
department of Music Chair.
Students may enroll in no more than six (6) semester hours
of graduate music study prior to completing all of the required music placement
examinations and auditions.
PLACEMENT IN GRADUATE APPLIED
MUSIC CLASSES
Students intending to enroll in graduate applied music classes must take a
Performance Placement Examination prior to their initial registration. Approval for
registration in graduate applied music presupposes that students have met the appropriate
performance levels for undergraduate senior music majors.
