AHN 347 Adult Health Nursing I 3 cr

Provides the opportunity to analyze theories, concepts, research, issues and trends in
caring for adults with basic and commonly occurring health care needs. Content includes internal
and external environmental factors affecting the health of adults with basic and commonly
occurring health care needs. Emphasis is on the role of the professional nurse in health promotion
and maintenance, illness care, and rehabilitation of adults. Requires professional component
standing. Prerequisites: CMN 350, CMN 351, and NU 327. Corequisite: AHN 348.
AHN 348 Adult Health Nursing Clinical I 3 cr
Clinical practice course in adult health nursing. The focus is on application of theories,
concepts, research, issues and trends in caring for adults with basic and commonly occurring
health care needs. Emphasis is on the role of the professional nurse and on the use of the nursing
process with adults experiencing basic and commonly occurring health care needs and their
families. Prerequisites: CMN 350, CMN 351, and NU327. Corequisite: AHN 347.
AHN 447 Adult Health Nursing II 3 cr
Provides students the opportunity to analyze theories, concepts, research, issues and
trends in caring for adults with complex multisystem health care needs. Content includes internal
and external environmental factors affecting the health of adults with complex multisystem
health care needs. Emphasis is on the role of the professional nurse in health promotion and
maintenance, illness care, and rehabilitation of adults. Prerequisites: MCN 345 and 346.
Corequisite: AHN448.
AHN 448 Adult Health Nursing Clinical II 3 cr
Clinical practice course in adult health nursing. Focus is on application of theories,
concepts, research, issues and trends in caring for adults with complex multisystem health care
needs. Emphasis is on the role of the professional nurse and on the use of the nursing process
with adults experiencing complex multisystem health care needs and their families. Prerequisites:
MCN 345 and 346. Corequisite: AHN 447.
AHN 548 Advanced Assessment of Older Adults 2 cr
The purpose of this course is to expand the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner/Clinical
Nurse Specialist student's knowledge and skills for obtaining, recording, and analyzing a
systematic health assessment of the older adult. Emphasis is placed on synthesis and application
of nursing and related theories and scientific knowledge to the development of
differential/nursing diagnoses as a basis for health promotion and management. Corequisites:
AHN 549.
AHN 549 Advanced Assessment of Older Adults Practicum 1 cr
The purpose of this clinical course is to provide an environment in which Gerontological
Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist students have the opportunity to become proficient
at obtaining, recording, and analyzing a systematic health history and advanced physical
examination of older adults. The focus is refinement of cognitive and clinical skills needed to
provide comprehensive health assessments of older adults. Corequisites: AHN 548.
AHN 552 Advanced Gerontological Nursing I 3 cr
The purpose of this didactic course is to prepare Gerontological Nurse
Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist students to assess, diagnose, and manage selected health
care needs of older adults. The focus is on advanced practice nursing with older adults and
families in primary and acute care settings. Emphasis is on wellness and the pathophysiology and
epidemiology underlying acute and chronic health problems. Prerequisites: AHN 548, AHN 549,
NU 506. Corequisites: AHN 553.
AHN 553 Advanced Gerontological Nursing Practicum I 3 cr
The purpose of this practicum course is to provide opportunities for Gerontological Nurse
Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist students to apply concepts from Advanced Gerontological
Nursing I in select clinical settings. The emphasis is on diagnostic reasoning and decision
making/critical thinking. Prerequisites: AHN 548, AHN 549, NU 506. Corequisites: AHN 552.
AHN 554 Advanced Gerontological Nursing II 3 cr
The purpose of this course is to provide the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner/Clinical
Nurse Specialist student an in-depth study of the health care management of older adults within
the framework of nursing. The focus is on selected acute and chronic complex health care
problems of the gerontological patient. Emphasis is on the interaction among health care
providers in a culturally diverse environment. Prerequisites: AHN 552, AHN 553. Corequisites:
AHN 555, AHN 560.
AHN 555 Advanced Gerontological Nursing Practicum II 3 cr
The purpose of this course is to provide opportunity for the Gerontological Nurse
Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist student to practice within an advanced nursing framework.
The focus is on the role of the advanced practice nurse in the management of health care for older
adults. Emphasis is on collaboration with other health care providers in a culturally diverse
environment. Prerequisites: AHN 552, AHN 553. Corequisites: AHN 554, AHN 560.
AHN 556 Advanced Gerontological Nursing Internship 4 cr
The purpose of this culminating course is to provide a preceptor and faculty facilitated
experience in the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist role. The focus is
on the application and synthesis of knowledge and skills acquired in all previous courses.
Prerequisites: AHN 554, AHN 555, AHN 560. Corequisites: AHN 557. Pre or Co-requisites: All
core and research courses.
AHN 557 Advanced Gerontological Nursing Seminar 2 cr
The purpose of this course is to provide a forum for the evaluation of issues and trends
encountered in advanced gerontological health nursing care. Emphasis is on critical analysis and
management of issues by the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist student
in an interdisciplinary health care delivery system. Prerequisites: AHN 554, AHN 555, AHN
560. Corequisites: AHN 556. Pre or Co-requisites: All core and research courses.
AHN 560 Advanced Gerontological Nursing Pharmacology Seminar 1 cr
The purpose of this seminar course is to provide advanced content in pharmacology for
the Gerontological Health Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist. The focus is on clinical
applications and pharmacokinetics of selected pharmacologic agents used with older adults.
Emphasis is on current research and trends related to the pharmacological treatment of older
persons' health problems. Prerequisites: NU 578. Corequisites: AHN 554, AHN 555.
AHN 568 Advanced Nursing Assessment of Adults 2 cr
The purpose of this course is to expand the Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner/Clinical
Nurse Specialist student's knowledge and skills for obtaining, recording, and analyzing a
systematic health assessment of the adult. Emphasis is placed on synthesis and application of
